Range Report 6GT Project/Range Report

Thank you for the update. Please keep them coming. There are several of us very interested in the development of this round and there is still not much info or testing I can find out there. Your project and information you are sharing is very much appreciated.

All good. I enjoy reloading (to a certain point) and this T&E is showing a lot of promise. Dan just got his GT barrel spun up so we will have more info shortly.

Jorge Bonilla sent me 105 and 115s RDFs that will be shot during my next range session.

Really interested in how the 105’s do

Have you tried RL15? I get great results in my 6BRA with it. It will be the first powder I try when I can eventually get a hold of this calibre in Australia.

No yet. Going to focus on varget (what I have a lot of) and I have not been a fan of Reloader 15 due to the temp sensitivity. We swing from 30s in the winter to 100s in the summer in Sacramento.

This maybe a silly question, I know guys are saying that varget is a throat burner. Would reloaded 16 be any good in this cartridge ? Just wondering

I have not ran RL 16 before, but could give it a shot once testing is complete using Varget.

I’d suggest trying h4895. It’s another temp insensitive powder that is almost a direct replacement for varget. Isn’t supposed to be as bad on throats. I believe @bohem was the first to really bring it out In The 6br, or atleast he was the one I learned of it from. Is a little faster so my loads are a little lower than varget

Bench rest shooters have been using H4895 for a long time with 6BR cartridges.

Nothing new.

Yeah i figured someone had, I just meant on this forum. Up until then it was varget, varget, varget. Now seems to be a bunch of guys shooting h4895.

Broke in the GT 2.0 (1:7 twist) about 2 weeks ago with 25 rounds. Heavy clean the barrel.

Zeroed, shot a practice out to 1K and shot our monthly LR match this last weekend. Sent about a 100 rounds total down range.

I didn't have time to work up a load so I decided to use a load that looked promising in the GT 1.0.

Rolled with 33.9gn of Varget pushing a 112 Barnes Match Burner. Previous numbers said I would be at 2900, but I was closer to 2970 as the barrel broke in. 6.8mils out to 1K.

Notes: Those 112s HAMMER and do pretty freaking good in the wind. A lot of my misses was because I called too much wind vs. not enough.

One thing I am liking about the GT is the consistency from gun to gun so far. The 108 ELDMs with 33.5gn of Varget hammered in GT 1.0 and those same rounds in the GT 2.0 hammered as well.

One thing I loved about my 260 was being able to run the same load from barrel to barrel. I didn't load dev for years running a 260rem. I am hoping that will be the case with the GT

A few pics from this past weekend. I did have some vertical stringing as I am trying to get use to the chassis life. It was night and day vs. my KMW Sentinel. Just not comfy behind my XLR yet.

SDs and ES were decent considering I am running 2 different charge masters at the same time.

Another powder that may bear fruit is AR-Comp, it supposed to be a temp insensitive Rl-15

I too am loving the 112's and like seeing what velocity you are getting from them in the GT. Can't wait to get my GT going. I am currently running those at the same speed with slow powder in a creed which I think is a shame. Also just had a barrel let go at 900 rounds with that combo. I feel like it is a waste of a case to go that slow.

Out of curiosity, what barrels do you use? Make and # of Grooves? I had some 112's blow up in a 4 groove barrel. Not sure if it is just the lot, the barrel getting worn out, the heat that weekend, or a combo of all of it.

@NorCal Vu thanks for the write up and the 1000 yard groups. This thread has me very excited about the GT. That and all the stickers that are accumulating.

I should be beaten for not know this, but I haven't checked the number of grooves. I know both GTs are Bartlein barrels. GT 1.0 is a 7.7 twist and the 2nd one is a 7.0 twist. Both came from George and I would think they are 5Rs. I pretty stick to Bartlein and Proof.

I am going to back those 112s down a touch and see how they run at about 2920 to 2940. Dan is having great luck out of his Dasher and believes there is a good node between 2880 to low 2900s.

I just got the new RCBS dies from GAP. Can't wait till Alpha comes out with their brass. Gonna be starting my load development based off your results.

What are you initial thoughts on the dies?

Can’t decided if I should get these or the Redding set

Initial impressions are it's a solid quality feeling dies. Apparently its RCBS new "flagship" dies so that's saying something. Seater is nice but curious as to how I'll feel about the bullet window. No brass to try it out yet. Never tried RCBS competition dies before but for the price and included bushing, it's over $100 cheaper than the Reddings. That's over $100 I can save and use for when Apha comes out with the brass. I wish I could get both dies and test them out together to really see someday. Maybe someone that gets the Redding dies will let me borrow theirs for a couple of weeks to test.

I have the Hornady dies and will probably switch to either RCBS or Redding later on. Price will drop as the GT becomes more mainstream.

Reddings are nice, but I can't justify the coin right now.

Just a tip, if you are having problem fitting enough H4350 in the case, RL-16 will be a no go as it has more bulk to it.

I’ve actually used RL16 with a 6” drop tube in a straight 6BR. It was compressed, but I got around 2850-2900 FPS with a 105 hybrid in a 28” barrel. Accuracy was actually pretty decent too. I don’t know why it wouldn’t work in a 6 GT, seeing as how the capacity is almost that of a 6x47.

I’m running RL16 in a 6x47 with 105’s, getting 3060 out of a suppressed 26” rock creek. Load data shows 39.4 gr in the case, no drop tube required. That combo should run in the GT case just fine.

Looking forward to hearing your results. I'll be picking up 500 pieces of brass when it eventually arrives down under - hopefully late this year along with a set of Redding dies.

I ordered 200 just for the hell of it. Figure if I don’t build one I can sell it. I have an extra Tikka action laying around that will probably get turned into one after seeing Toms at the GAP match.

What COAL are you all running in this with 105s? Trying to figure out if this will run out of the Borden super short 6.

Vu,

What is your load for the 112 MB, if you don't mind? I assume that is w/ H4350? I am about to get this kicked off.

33.5 varget. 2900fps
30 thou off the lands
Lapua formed cases. Alpha will need 33.8 to maybe 34.0. varget.

Dan ran 36.5 H4350 in Alpha cases and shot that group in the article. 2900fps.

@NorCal Vu do you happen to have a measurement of total neck diameter of a loaded round, or neck wall thickness for a piece of the Alpha brass?

I’m wondering if it’s thinner than Alpha’s 6XC and 6 Creed brass? Reason I’m curious is the 6GT reamer specs are for a 0.273” neck, where the typical 6XC and 6 Creed are 0.275-0.276” to give a little more clearance for the thick necks.

Thanks!

Sam

Sam,

.269 to give 2 thou clearance on each side.

Anyone have a picture of where a 105 Hybrid sits in the neck when seated to the lands? Is the Freebore a compromise for 115s vs Hybrids? How far out in the neck is the bearing surface/ boattail junction?
I’m also curious as to how it compares to the standard freebore on a Dasher. I’m guessing it’s a good compromise for the 105 Hybrid, 110 A-Tip, and 115 DTAC.

I can tell you that the 105s, 108s, 110s, 112s hammer down.

Once I get some production Alpha brass in hand, I will play with the 115s more with H4350. George got them to shoot running RL16.

@reubenski What do you think? Do you want to see the freebore be a little shorter than 0.120", more in the 0.090-0.104" range that Dasher typically has for 105gr bullets?

It looks to me like it'll be a good balance, I'm sure longer bullets like the 108 ELDM, 110 A-Tips, and 115 DTACs will sit quite a bit deeper in the neck.

It seems like visually with the 0.050" longer neck vs a Dasher that there's room to go with a shorter FB. But a 0.015" difference in FB isn't all that much. I think the Dasher is more limited with FB because of how short the neck is to keep a 105 out of the shoulder junction. Maybe since the GT has more horsepower they figured guys would go towards the heavier class bullets?

I think I will try the 108 ELDMs and maybe the A-Tips. I don't have any desire to switch bullets midway through a barrel, so I won't go from 105s to 115s if it wears that fast. But in my experience with the 140 Hybrids at least, they're pretty jump tolerant so I don't know if you really even need to chase the lands out that 0.050" it will wear in the first 1000 rounds?

Or if you're buying your own reamer from GAP you could have JGS or PTG re-grind the freebore, or order it custom direct from the beginning.

For me, yes. I guess it just depends on your use. I shoot a Dasher for barricade heavy PRS matches. 105's at 2900. Low recoil. Shorter average ranges. But I shoot 115 DTACs at 3000fps suppressed in a 6 Creed and 6 SLR in field matches that are mostly belly/ prone. A little heavier recoil. If this case is the "better Dasher" then I think 105 class bullets might be more popular. And it's how I plan on using it. You can see from that pic that the reamer is spec'd for a DTAC. I think you'll probably see 40 to 60 thou of erosion in 1000rds and you won't have enough neck for Hybrids or 110SMKs anymore.

I'll try 107 SMKs in mine based on that FB.

How do you think the reamer from Vu's pic would work for 110 SMKs (in a 7 twist)?
