I have some birthday money, so I'm trying to decide what to get first.
Would you get either:

1. Vortex 4000 LRF $500
2. Leupold RX-2800 TBR $400
or
3. Magnetospeed V3 Chronograph $380

For context, I have a leupold 1000TBR currently, and do not have a chronograph. I do not reload. I'd like to do some PRS style matches in the future.
Primarily I shoot less than 1 mile and hunt. My LRF I currently own is adequate for hunting, but not really for shooting steel for > 700 yards, I have to "leap frog" my rangefinding for shooting steel.

well - think of it this way.

you can utilize a range finder while shooting at different distances to true your MV

but you can't range find with a chronograph lol.

But he already has a range finder, so I'd rather have an accurate velocity and tune BC, so I'd have more accurate data down range.

Good choice. Was about to say chrono and shoot at known distances past your LRFs range awhile. Heck or drop $30 on a mildot master.
Right?! May be a good opportunity to shoot some unknown distance targets haha. pretty pumped to actually know my true muzzle velocity, especially now that I have a suppressor.
I guess i'm going to need to get a data book to record my suppressed / unsuppressed fps on my rifles and such now

I'm in the same boat, I'm gonna go with a LRF first since I'll use it more hunting. I'll probably skimp and just get the sporter Magnetospeed to suffice in the meantime.

I've never had to do any calibrating after using the velocity from my Magnetospeed.
That is awesome for you, on both my guns the magneto speed MV had to be calibrated out at 500-600 yards, then the kestrel and other solvers were correct. Calibrating MV align with the consistent guidance from AB, Hornady, and others.

If you load your own ammo, get the magneto.

If not, dealers choice. As mentioned above, you don’t need it to collect data and line up your calculator. Can you and do many people? Yep. But you don’t have to.

If you load ammo, I’d get the v3 as it will speed up the process of figuring out which loads to run with.

If you are ever going to reload then get the magneto speed. If you truly never will then get a new LRF. Really you should consider what is going to be most beneficial for you. Maybe it won't be either, maybe it will just be more ammo (channel your inner armyjerry lol)

I have one of the prochrono digtals... I always thought it was crap.... But, after using it i found it works ok. When i went to true my MV at 500, it was on.... So theres that. If you want both, maybe get that and a $400 RF.
