It is graded correctly, they got the right answer but did not follow direction

It's mind-DUMBing "new math" idiot counting.

As far as I'm concerned, the kid wasted time drawing out Individual numbers and stupid tick-marks in the first place.

Regardless: five 3's or three 5's still equal 15.
Four rows of 6 or six rows of 4 still equals 24.

Other than being slow as molasses and twice as dumb, the math is correct.

If you are a teacher and seriously defending that oxygen-wasting red-ink-using "grading monkey", then please, for the love of God, stop infecting our kids with that drivel and just retire.

The whole thing reminds me of this scene. From the invasion of the body snatchers.

Like it or not, that "NEW MATH" isn't new at all.
Try that in any engineering class and defend your POV with your argument - I'll bet you'll get your ass booted.

Not sure who you're talking to, but you can add military aviation to the list of careers that don't have time (literally) for people who suck at quick mental math.

One beauty of math is you can arrive at the correct answer from multiple avenues. This "common core math" BS is waaaaay too slow, and it takes the scenic route through the crack den part of town. You find yourself asking "wtf? How did we get here?"

New math isn't new, but unfortunately the government screws everything up by overcomplicating everything.

4 plus decades ago when I was a boy, we called it rolling numbers. It's just mental tricks to make math easier.

If you have ever shot darts on a league, you may have learned an easy one for playing 01.

In the above referenced equation of 568-293, doing it in your head is 568-300+7. 268+7=275. It's quick and you can do it while walking to the board to write you score.
