Scope in a carry on?

Just hope the TSA guys aren't pricks. I was flying home from Wisconsin with a scope wrapped up in my clothes for protection. I told the guys doing the inspection it was there. 10 minutes of bullshit and then the sargent bitching me out about how everyone is so uptight about guns and shit. Fuck the TSA!

I would NOT chance it. Anything that can be considered a "gun part" is asking for trouble. I used to travel with a spare trigger, until they threw it away. Same with mags, scopes, I wouldn't even travel with a scope ring lol.

Just play it safe and if give yourself time to go back out and mail it/check your bag if you run into someone making the world a better place.

You can have a scope in carry on. Just did it, looked it up, asked a TSA supe about it.

It's not part of a firearm, neither are the rings. It's specifically listed on their website as able to be carried on.

Trigger is a no no. Mags a no no. Brass a no no.

Scope is fine, rings aren't a restricted item, if you run into trouble be polite, if you act like a dick yer done.

Deal with TSA almost daily, trust me.

What about on an international flight?

No issues. TSA doesn't care where your destination is. Everyone gets the same screening to get through into the secure area of an airport.

Your issue will be the violation of ITAR because you will be exporting weapons parts to foreign countries. Unless you have a specific export license from the Dept. of State (hint: if you're asking this question, you don't) you can't even ship weapons parts (including optics, rings, parts, triggers, pistol slides, etc) to an APO/FPO if it's in a foreign country, even though it's being shipped to a military member.

You may also run into issues when you land at your destination and come through their customs control, as well as US customs when you return home with the parts in question.

Ok. So is there an extra form to fill out if a guy is going overseas on a hunt or to a match and wants to take some nice toys?

Hi,

YES, not just a form to fill and go about your trip though...an entire export license application has to be submitted to DDTC well in advance of your International trip.

Temporary exportation would be a DSP 73 and its' supporting documents would need to be completed, submitted and await approval.

Sincerely,
Theis

Over thanksgiving I brought a PM2 from LAX to Dulles to have the guys in Winchester check it out. Again zero issues.
