Sako TRG M10

Things are happening fast. I found a perfect second hand M10. It has a lot of extras but it’s too expensive for me but still I’m tempted to try if I can get a license for it! It almost feels like a lottery where you can lose 80€ or a lot more ?

What barrel lengths do you have for 338lm? I notices that you can have 20”, 23,5” and 27” barrels. What kinds of speeds you can have from 20” barrel?

27 inch only for mine. Anything shorter is simply not ideal for the powder burn rates that are also ideal. 200 fps decrease, no thank you! Not conducive to optimal usage for this caliber in my opinion.

Thanks @AIAW this is gold :) Is it quickload? Seems like something I should get to make more educated guesses about loads.

My reason to 20" barrel would be that because it's easy to change it would be nice to have additional short barrel for some hunting situations where shooting distances are less than 200 meters and maneuverability is preferred. All barrels seems to be priced to 990€ here in Finland and I guess that you could get some discount.

Yes sir it is. Excellent for these comparisons, in addition to load development. This is trued data directly from my Sako M10 (expect very similar from a TRG-42).

If it was an additional barrel no problem. I don’t think I would limit myself if the 20" was my only barrel.

Not that it will be needed, but with you being located in Finland you will get WAY better service than we get here in the States. We get screwed by having to deal with Beretta - and generally they just don‘t give a damn. Not Sako’s fault, mostly.

Yes! It would be lovely to have M10 here in Finland and service would be really good. Only problem is that we have quite restrictive licence policy and nowadays for some reason 338lm is difficult to get for hunting even though 338wm, 375h&h and some other quite similar heavy calibers are just fine.

Actually there is not so big difference between 338wm and 338lm but I would like to have that extra speed to make sure that TTSX or naturalis will open properly.

Just received one in 308win today.
Got it from me friend to test, but im afraid, that it might make me want it :D

Still a die-hard AI fan, but the M10 is special in a few places that I wish AI would adapt.

There's no doubt you'll want to keep it, so go go ahead and prepare for that.

Absolutely, go ahead and give in now!
It will be easier in the end. Otherwise the gun lust will just linger.

I’m working with Sako to purchase barrel extensions to make this process for custom barrels a little easier
Is Sako actually going to start selling them? I hit them up at SHOT last year, followed up with the product manager and no joy. Out of sheer blind luck I happened across a few.
who is doing your barrels?

I am expecting my M10 tomorrow. I just won it on Gun broker a little over a week ago. They are seriously overpriced and if you can pick one up used you'll save a fortune. I figure i saved $4k. Mine had 10 rounds through it, new in my book. I have some machinist friends that I am going to contact and see how hard it would be to machine extensions. I'd be willing to pay a few bucks if i could save having to buy donor barrels. Used 300 win mag rifles would be the best deal as most people want a 308 or 338 bolt face. I win though because I plan to make a 6.5 and 300 PRC. I'll let you know what i think when it gets here.
Careful with that. I looked into it. They do some heat treating to make them strong enough.

Yeah, I figured so much. My machinist buddies manufacture and have designed some of the actions most of you guys are familiar with. If I get this project going I'll be in good hands.

Only some gunporn pictures manage to take.
Must go with Steiner M7Xi.

Slightly off topic but can someone provide 338 load data for this rifle with H1000 and 300 grain Bergers? I am using stock 27" 338 barrel. I prefer H1000 because I am using it for a couple other cartridges.

Can get another node at 91.5g, but bolt lift isn't great and very faint ejector markings.

@JustBC My data is for the 300g Lapua Scenar by the way, not the Bergers. I don't believe I have tried those in the M10. I do have load data on an AXMC I believe. For what it's worth, the AXMC and M10 load data was a bit different. They weren't very portable between the two rifles.

Thanks, appreciate the help. I saw that it was for Scenars.
I was looking for the higher node, between 90-91. I will try coming down and see if I get better accuracy and consistency.

My rifle is moving on a left side after shot all time, does anyone has solution for it? What accuracy do you have? I use 300gr Lapua ammunition - GB528.

New catalogs seems to show the m10 rocking M-lok handguards similar to when the new gen trgs came out. Anyone know if they're available separately?

I saw that last year and asked euro optic but they knew nothing. We'll see if they show up as support of parts inventory really dried up last year.

Beretta and to a lesser extent Brownells have alot of the parts for that platform. All the vendors just order them from Beretta instead of stocking them do to the low volume of sales. I talked with the guy at Beretta a few weeks ago.

The one part they don't have is the barrel torque wrench. I checked with everyone. So I am building my own. I'll have to post pictures when complete.

What areas is the AI behind in in your opinion? Also in what way do your loads vary AI vs Sako? Which would you say handles pressure better?

They aren’t huge, but novel differences mainly.

M10:

Bolt can be used as the tool for removing the barrel, or to access the forend toolkit. Technically it can be used as a barrel nut wrench also.

Trigger shoe is rotation adjustable.

All magazines are the same external dimensions.

Ergonomics in the cheek-rest and grip are way better than an AX.

Folding stock lockup is solid and retained.

As far as loading pressure, I feed it pretty much the same diet at the same charge weights as my AX’s. Not a big difference here at all. I would say the Sako and AI have the same primary extraction force and timing. It really comes down to ergonomics. They are both going to shoot exceptionally.

Looks like they have some errors on the site. I guarantee the 6.5 creedmoor does not have a 1-11” twist. I have a 6.5 creedmoor Sako TRG and it has a 1-8”.

Quick dumb question, are both bolts securing the handguard captured or just the one closest to the reciever. Haven't done a barrel change on mine in awhile and on mine just the one is captured, not sure if I broke something or let loose some pins.

Does anyone know if there is enough barrel real estate to chase a 6.5 PRC reamer down the bore? I think I would buy a new creedmoor barrel just for that purpose.

It seems that you cannot get M10 from Finland under 8000€ ?

TRG-42 starts to look good ?

I actually prefer TRG-42 over A1. M10 is interesting because calibre change option not so much because of the looks. I would love to have another calibre and maybe shorter barrel at some point.

My budget at this point is maybe 6000€ For rifle, scope mount, bipod and brake so it’s not that far.

IMHO TRG 22 or 42 are slightly better than M10. Using ex. TRG 22 I could make better size group at closer distance using M10 can't. M10 could get better result at farther distance. Currently M10 has child age problems...

TRG-22 and TRG-42 are well thought, accurate and simple rifles. TRG bipod is also very good. If you don't need multiple calibers those are just awesome. Only thing that I don't like them is folding stock that folds to wrong side.

M10 is great due multiple calibers and really nice folding stock. And of course there is more than enough places to attach something. And of course with it you don't need to think what if.. :)

Let's see how it goes. At least I have a license to acquire.

For those of you who have an M10, there is a guy that makes barrel bags and bolt pouches. He is starting to make magazine pouches as well. Everything has molle on the back so they can be hooked together. This makes it harder to forget to bring a bolt or magazine along with the barrel. His Hide alias is softcock. The quality and stitching is very good.

I’ve had one. Shot great. Minuses are rattling magazine, rattling adjustable length of pull, broke the stock (weak point by screw on lower contact point), broke the monopod twice (stopped locking), not optimal ergonomics for shooting off barricades or bags (tapering foreend). Shot it 3k 338lm and 2k 308. Sold it. really nice bolt action, coating and feel however. Also like the barrel change system. Just not solid enough for hard use.

I have to agree thet magazines are bit rattling.
