Sell me on a 300 WSM vs. 300 WM vs. 300 PRC for Hunting.

I went with a 24" proof sendero lite. Functions 100% it weighs right at 7 pounds. Lots of areas to shave weight if you wanted lighter.

Your Entire set up looks really nice!!! I really like the idea of a 24” carbon barrel (or possibly even 22” in WSM). What type of stock is that? I have a suppressor but plan on running this rifle unsuppressed.

Its a McMillan HTG Edge. I really like it for a hunting stock. I went proof to get the diameter to run suppressed without the extra weight.

Recently built a 300WSM. Not for long hikes. It's a "I'm going over there and sitting my happy ass down" rifle. Weighs 16 pounds. It's a Shilen 24" 1:10 Select Match barrel. Picture is only three shots and only 50 yards at 19 rounds down the barrel. Was getting on paper and just having fun.
This was just 165gr Hornady Whitetail.

I'll be doing more testing this weekend at 100 yards with 5 shot groups with several offerings from Hornady and a load from Federal from 165gr to 200gr.

Rebuilt Savage Model 10. Only issue is feeding from a magazine, either need to play with the feed lips or grind them back a little so rounds release sooner. She's fun to shoot and feels like a 308.

This winter is a light weight 6.5 PRC build with a Proof carbon and Curtis Axiom.

I know Seekins has a great name. Their warranty looks like it covers everything, no questions asked. They don’t guarantee sub-MOA. Given this, you still think this would be better than CA (guarantees sub MOA but lots of caveats in warranty, etc.)?

There rifles shoot, I have the PH1 in 6 Creedmoor and I've regularly printed 0.6" groups at 200yds (my zero range) with hornady match ammo. They say if it is not shooting to your standards you can send it back. They'll look it over and shoot some groups, ask you if their groups are to your standards, if so they send it back, if not they'll keep working with it.

I've read quite a few horror stories about CA customer service but have no first hand experience so take it for what its worth.

That’s really impressive to hear!!!

Technically 0.632 lol. My buddy has the PH2 in 300PRC and it was definitely sub MOA with the Precision Hunter 212ELDX, he hasn't tried the 225 Match load yet.

Thanks everyone for your help on this. Thinking through this more, for hunting heavy game and plinking, is a 300 WSM and a 300WM really getting me that much more than a 30-06 can do? Just an extra 150-200 yards maybe beyond 500 for similar energy levels?

It seems like the 300 PRC offers far more potential above what I can get with a 30-06. And with factory rifles guaranteeing sub-MOA with factory ammo (aka reasonably priced Hornady ammo) is the factory ammo concern even really something to be that concerned about? I’m guessing more factory loads will be offered in the future as well...??

Maybe 24” 300PRC would fit the bill...

Have no idea on how they compare other then just a quick search on Hornady ELDx ammo. 200gr wsm and WM are 2820 and 2860fps. 212gr PRC is 2840fps.

I don't think there is enough there to mean much. Reloading might tell a different story. But I'm happy with my WSM and would pick it again.

There’s not until you put a big 225 or 250 grain bullet in the PRC. That’s what that cartridge was made to launch. The 250 grain still has in excess of 1,600 ft-lbs of energy at 1000 yards. Limiting bullet weights to 200 does point heavily towards the WSM though.

I think I would go with the PRC. Seems like a really well designed cartridge and I like the tighter freebore and they way more of the bullet is out of the powder. It seems like a super sized Creedmoor in that respect. Also with the long action and .532 bolt face you can rechamber to a number of options if the ammo gets to be difficult to obtain or you want to try something else.

I
On Sportsman’s Warehouse, looks like the 300 PRC is a 1:10 twist. I don’t really understand this for a rifle specifically intended to run heavies. Seems most of the 300 PRC builds are 1:8 or 1:9.
I have a 300prc in 1:10 for the 212eldx and an AXMC in 1:9 for the 225 eldm. They both are 1/2 moa with factory ammo. The nice thing about 300prc is it is affordable and available factory ammo. I love me some Berger ammo but holy shit 75 bucks a box for 300wm? I see no real advantage in getting a 300wm at this point.

Winchester M70 Featherweight in 300 wsm and no issues at all even with my longer handloads. And if you can handle the recoil it's easily sub MOA... For 3-5 shots.... Then that thin barrel gets HOT.

I have one chambered in 300 Weatherby. Shoots great for three rounds then groups loosen up due to barrel heating up. She does kick like a mule too. But for a rifle in this caliber it is light and great for hunting.

Thnx for the input everyone. I think for my purposes, a 300 WSM makes the most sense. There are models known to feed reliably, so this doesn’t have to be an issue. And with the barrel length, weight etc I am looking for I think it will work really well.

If I were to go the next step up instead, I think I would go 300 PRC. Worst case scenario I could pretty easily rechamber to something else if needed...

75 bucks a box for berger? Ive been shooting the factory 215's for awhile. Never paid more then 43 bucks a box....

I’m planing on building a 300 prc on a Bighorn action next month. Can’t wait to workup some 250 grain atip loads for it.

Buy a tikka and be done. If you want to go on the heavier bullet side, go 300wm. Tikka’s shoot. Maybe one in 10,000 won’t outshoot you. Putt a brake on it if you plan to bag steel. 6.5 pound guns are not fun in 300wm.

Tikkas are great, I own 3, but for a long action you are limited by COAL.

Have yourself built a .300 WM 1-9 twist barrel to shoot the Nosler 190 LR Accubond. That will kill anythng in North America. Shoot Sierra 190 Mk for fun.
I shoot the 180 Accubond in a 1-10 twist. Have killed a Cow Elk at 910 yds with that round. Nosler Custom load. Rifle is a Rem 700, Krieger barrel. McMillan M-40 stock, PTG Bottom metal and Magpul mags. The Remington 700 is the 350 Chevy in the Gun world.

So I ultimately ended up getting a Sako Finnlight II 300 WSM for this hunting rig. Topped off with optilock bases, spuhr rings and a Vortex Razor LHT 3-15 x 42. I realize barrel twist is 1:11, but it seems to shoot 200 gr ELDX just fine. Won’t be going much heavier than that with factory ammo. Also a limbsaver air tech recoil pad. Very pleasant to shoot.

9 lbs with bipod, scope and everything else.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Tikka's have a 1-11 twist in their 300 WM which makes no sense if you plan on shooting the heavier bullets.

I have a ph2/seekins in 300 prc. Its shoots 1/3 moa at 100y and .47 moa at 200y. I shoot a 210 vld hunting bullet. I love the seekins rifle and I have several custom builds. Also if you find a 25% off coupon you can get it around 1280-1320 . It was a no brainer for me.
