FBI Sniper Rifles

well that hits me in the gut. I won seven trophy Garands in the early 2000's for pistol shooting, made P100 in '06. I would make sure I won one a M86 if I was still allowed to. There was a time when even retired Navy could earn a trophy rifle.

BTW, the M86 was followed up on the teams with the M89 in .300WM, then they went to building the R700 in 300WM. I knew the armorer at Crane that built them. He would come out to San Diego with the support van for the PACFLT matches every summer and also Camp Perry. The M86 has a 5P barrel, supposedly made by one of the McMillan's, maybe Rock? They might have used Bill Wiseman for a time. Mine has the original barrel, 5P. Still shoots well.
Crane dont support the squid team any more and not even the van. They should allow retired Navy as the majority of the current group is pretty mediocre compared to the other services.

So far I'm with you on the M86 pictured above. But, does anyone have the purpose of the oversize bolt shroud?

Digressing a bit, but it was a safety measure. Joe Poyner's book as noted in earlier post, page 126:

"Gale McMillan chose to replace the sheet steel extractor in the Remington Model 700 bolt with an external claw. He also changed the bolt stop and relocated its as switch on the right side of the receiver to make it easier for the shooter to remove when wearing gloves. He also designed a deflector on the cocking shroud to prevent gas blasting back into the shooter's face in the event of a pierced primer or a case separation. The receiver and bolt assembly was manufactured by Harris Gun Works. A total of 460 M86 Sniper Rifles were produced for the Special Operations Command."

FWIW, I recall a guy on the M14 who had a tan camo M86 stock and searched for a few years for the proper McMillan short action on gunbroker, but never found the right one for sale, so I think he sold the stock. I did keep a picture of it for anyone interested. Looks like a black stock might have been offered as well (maybe Xcount could elaborate re his rare rifle).

Skunk and J-Husky, did field SWAT guys have an option to carry a hi-power / 1911 or were those HRT only? I'm going to start a thread for those, if you guys have info.
Thanks Again for all the Rifle Info!

Best bud carried a personal sig 220 and later, the FBI issued 1911.
Kinda like pistols didnt really matter, but I gave him the 220 for a birthday/Christmas so he could carry a 45.
I dont remember what he carried b4 that., I think sig 226.
The rifle, the m4, the mp5-sd, and later mp10mm were my interests in his kit. Kept trying to survey the mp10mm. I still want one.

My M86 is stamped G.McMillan. Later models were built by Harris, then there was a lawsuit.

Gotcha
Also as far as Im aware McMillan has used Schneider barrels since when they stopped making em themself. They may have used Wisemans for a short time but something went wrong there. Havent heard good things about Mr Wiseman, but IDK him personally so.. Supposedly he "stole" the Mcmillan barrel business in some kind of shady way? I cant quite remember.. @Frank Green have you heard about this?

x2 MP5/10mm is the shit. A 9x25 Dillon rebarrel would be interesting as well

I thought you'd recognize that stadium. The Bowl game... I think Nov 2015.

Rgr. B4 they put up the big board.

We formerly ran from the field up to the 2nd level. That SUCKED.... concrete felt real soft laying on it up there sucking wind... after being put on a beta blocker, I thought a couple of times I was going to be DRT...

I am soooooo glad I don't have to do that any more....

Not before.... I think it must've been about new though. The speakers up behind the AU were about 3 stories tall. Double ear pro was no defense against the migraine that followed! I think the whole setup is 11 stories? Plenty big!

That place up there sucks a monster. We ran up from the field, up again, then up to the board. That smoked us all.

2016 looking at the other end b4 fun on the stairs. From down under the monster... my last trip up. Never the absolute f again.....

Well, I'm about out of rifle photos/info re: the 80's era FBI sniper stuff. Got a few photos of the HS guns prior to rebuild (posted those tonight). Probably got a few of the current tomato stakes.... What now?

We pretty much covered what @Toftwo asked for and then some.

I found.... like the pre-64 on the data book cover....
My rifles wood stock and hunting barrel....
No longer have a 2x7 redfield, anywhere..,
Have the GP-M40a1 stock it went in. Found the 3.5-10 1" on a 22lr street light killer... that started on it.
Still have the 4.5-14 that followed.
And have the last variant in the A3 with the S&B.
Could do a pic with all the parts laid out called EVOLUTIONS.

And, found the pss stock, have the blue camo m40a1 stock available, the 3.5-10 1", and the 700 PSS iteration into an A3, w 4.5-14-50 that served 25 years.
And a 700 PSS iteration into an 1.5 accuracy chassis with S&B that could be another EVOLUTION pic.

Pretty much detailing the general iterations.

Would take a bit to get it all in one place for pics. Could do.

I've just been lurking here, soaking up the knowledge, but if you're willing to do the evolution pics I for one would love to see them.

Will do, be a couple of days though. Have to fetch one stock from gunsmith.

Need @Skunk if he can, to take pic of blue camo stock sling swivel stud placements for accuracy on clones, please sir !

The front stud on each stock is almost exactly 3" aft of the forend tip.
The rear studs are a little harder to get a good number because of the recoil pads, but each stud is right at 2-3/8" from the edge of the fiberglass at the toe. There is a little variance in recoil pads.
And, check out this old Harris bipod which was on the Win 70 stock. About 7-11" from the leg fulcrum...

@Skunk

That spacing is McMillan standard, or was standard then. Cant say if its changed, don't believe it has.

Thanks for the close up of the range card. I wondered if that was a sub 100 yard zero card and was going to ask for a close up. Makes total sense for shots taken across a typical two lane city street for instance.

Thanks for all the excellent photos And information

@njohn890

Looking at that card a little closer, I'm not sure how it was devised. Looking at the 125yd zero line, for example, I can't figure out why the bullet path at 200yd would reflect -7.88"!

Maybe the "7" should be a "3."

I didn't even look that close, but yeah, someone had a right index finger glitch when it should have been a left middle finger activation, as it was typed, not written.

I have a question for you experts. I have a 10 power US Optics scope with the serial number starting with FBI. Any ideas as to the original issuance of this scope.

Interesting. Post a pic, please. I used to work for USO and don’t remember doing any scopes for the Bu, nor have I seen any USO’s within the Bu.

We used to do custom serial numbers. So, it could’ve been done just on request.

Unfortunate Truth!

There were some short M70's as well! Here's one I'm working on. The stock had a short inlet and it took me awhile to find out what the original serial was so I could hunt for an action with similar serial number.View attachment 7347730
I hate it when this moves so fast and I didn't go back to it.

Anyhow, FTR, the Pre-'64's all came in one size. Basically a long action about the same length as a Mauser. Slightly shorter than the post-'63's (li'l mind catcher there...) 1985 was when Winchester started actually making the short action, pictured above by Skunk. Before that as noted, they would stuff a "box" in the back of the magazine so it made it harder to load. JK..., it was to keep the cartridges aligned while firing.

Here’s a pre-64 internal box mag for short cartridges. There’s also a short cartridge bolt stop that limits the rearward movement of the bolt. This is also how the post 64 “long” actions are set up for short action cartridges.

Is that tac-welded or just friction slipped into grooves machined in the sides of the box?
