Army M24 Build Thread

I believe Leupold supplied the original rings and bases. For a time they were available from Leupold under the Mk4 line.

Thanks for the reply, I have 2 one piece bases I know one is a Badger, just dont if the other is an early one from Leupold or a Badger from the 90's as well.

Triggermonkey thanks for the reply, I know on the old forum when he had for M24 builds, ther had been some pictures posted up. Although if I remember correctly the difference between the two were minimal.

Pretty sure Badger made the bases (90's) after whoever Leupold was sourcing them from stopped supplying em or went out of business. There had been some pics posted on the old thread of the sutle differences between the two, obviously they can't be seen anymore.

I know one of these bases is a Badger I got about a decade ago or so. The other I sourced from a retired SF guy locally.

The one on the left is definitely different, the edges are rounded off.

When I was putting them back together I realised the one significant difference was the diameter of the counterbore holes for the mounting screws. The counterbore holes on the base on the left are smaller didn't measure the exact difference but its there.

Nice picture of the differences. I had noticed differences in the Leupold Ultra rings too. Some of the rings I have seen had a slight purple hue.

One of my M24's even came with two variations of rings, one with the chamfered bolt and one with the flat ended bolt. It is perfect otherwise and has one of the very few G-prefix receivers, so it didn't bother me at all!

Here is a set of the Ultra rings that has the purple tint.

I can't tell you which is which in your picture, but the Leupold Ultra bases do have fairly sharp edges. These pictures are from that period, but are of an SA base.

Thanks for the reply, the one on the right has the sharp edges the other they are rounded. The counterbore holes are smaller for the older base. Which I presume are the bases contracted for the program until they dried up. Thanks for the explaination on the rings. I know leupold changed the cut on their mk4 rings in 2000 or so.

off topic but relevant question. i want to purchase the EO M24. what’s the hottest flattest shooting round with factory loaded ammo that can be stuffed into the m24 internal magazine?

sorry i meant if i rebarreled to a different caliber . what’s the oal i could get maintaining the308 bolt face and internal box mag
I wouldn't bother going that route, buying a M24 to rebarrel it. Plenty of options to choose from. OAL for a standard long action is about 3.6, remember that box on the M24 is modified to feed the 308

Are the M24 action screws the same length as standard BDL action screws?
I messed up one of mine and want to buy replacements.

Looking for a redfield front and rear site base for the M24.
Got a Original flash hider and the OK weber base is to high to get the locking ring over to secure the hider.

Great thread . learning as I go . I am building one for my son, I have a MIRS rail and barreled action so far . Stock is next on the list .

Rear will be a modified WB490. Front is a near impossible to find .175S
I've modded and parkerized several of the 490 rears. Not overly difficult. Lay back the top edge, low psi glass bead and then parkerize.

All early feature 24R. Early small logo stock, Dakota bottom metal, 1988 Ultra M3a w/ Ultra rings and base. Redfield bases, early Harris and 1992 dated sling round it out.

I have an old blued front sight base that came with a Redfield International front sight. It works with the flash hider. I don't have a rear sight base yet though.

As m1marty says the front I have never seen for sale, I have even messaged someone about replicating them. The rear wb490 I modded myself as abovrle, too lazy to park. I got one of the Outback copies a few years ago and not even close to the original to be honest.

I just checked and the one I have is a .225 base. It does allow enough clearance for the flash hider lock ring and works with the Redfield sight. It will serve until I find a .175S

On Deployment kit tools can anyone identify the manufacturer on:

Allen Wrenches (Should be marked on side)
1/2 Wrench (Along with Length)
Other Tools

On the small tools I'd go with US made options because over the lifespan of the rifle I'm sure multiple vendors provided the small parts to meet the specifications.

On the Allen wrenches I'd get a pack of USA made ones likes these from McMaster Carr:

McMaster Carr Allen Keys

Searching the NSN lists you'll find that the 1/2" wrench was manufactured by Armstrong, Part No. 30-316, but again I'm sure other manufacturers were used too. The OAL of the wrench is listed at about 6 1/2".

I have multiple eras of issued tools. Various manufacturers from Proto to Stanley to Craftsman etc

Looks like the majority of the cleaning kits and rods came from Kleen Bore. Any particular markings on the packages?

Is anyone able to tell me the length and head type of four #8-40 screws used to mount a MARS rail to the receiver. Thanks!

Hey guys, great thread going on here.

So Im looking to have a custom 308 built and I ran across the EuroOptic M24. It's not what I was planning on building but having an actual M24 would be pretty freakin cool, so Im kind of in a debate on which to do. Both are basically the same price.

How is the quality on the EuroOptic M24? How do they shoot? I have a bit of trigger time on M24s in the Army but those were all old rifles and I never got to do any real testing on them.

How is the quality on the EuroOptic M24?

Built to Mil-Spec by Remington Defense, which unfortunately went bankrupt with the company recently. If someone can afford to buy a EuroOptic M24 and has the proper scope to complete it, I think its a great investment. You'll thank yourself in 5 yrs when an M24R sells for perhaps $10k....
"Well, I guess the M24 just became more of a collectors item than it already was."
Me thinks that is a true statement.

On edit: Here's a good review of pros and cons, the only difference is the EuroOptic has a new stock and a not a used 'take-off' Army stock.

I have recently acquired a Remington m24 SWS marked U.S. centered above an E prefix serial number. Barrel is marked OW (July 2002) and barrel on right side is marked .308 winchester. Scope is marked Ultra 10X-M3, serial number dates it as 1984 manufactured. Is this a Remington Defense rebuild or something else, clone, CMP?

Perhaps a clone, only the first 1500 or 2000 rifles had a US marking, those would have been a c prefix. Also the original rifles would have been marked 7.62 instead if 308. Also the scope is incorrect, the m3a is the correct scope. That scope predates the M24 by a few years. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in, I cant see is it marked m24 on the action, did you call Remington with the serial number if they are even still around

Has it a M24 trigger, with regards the buttpad, real stocks have a thin buttpad which is Remington marked, where as commercial stocks have a thicker standard pad. It seems to be missing the front sight mounting block, is it drilled and just missing.

It's drilled but missing.

How did the seller advertise the rifle, or did you just come upon it. The stock seems to be commerical hs with the wrong butt pad, also the action sits very high in the stock was it bedded?
