Brings back a Basic Training (yeah, I know, A.F. puke) Sunday. My first Sunday we were allowed to go to church services, and since I was not a church kinda guy, I decided not to go. Thought I would stay in the barracks, polish my boots, read up on my manuals, etc..USMC did not "promote" any particular religion at PI in 1986.
I doubt that has changed.
but....
On Sunday mornings when you got your half day off it was generally understood you were better off going to church services than sitting on the end of your footlocker looking like chum to a bored duty DI.
I first attended RC services as that was what I was raised as and my dog tag said so.
RC services at PI were like RC services at home.........a lot of being yelled at.
Out of curiosity I decided to attend the Protestant service.
That was a trip.
Lots of singing.
"Lord of the Dance" Marine Corps style is motivating when the lyrics are altered to "Dance, dance wherever you may be for I am the Lord of the Infantry" and you are a guaranteed 03 contract.
Thats got to be a boot Protestant service.
What a mistake that was. The T.I., brought out a huge box of canteens and put me to the task of scrubbing each and every one of them, probably 60 in total (yes, I remember). Even when everyone returned, I was still scrubbing them, by toothbrush and soap, inside and out and each one had to be inspected by my T.I., before they went back into the box.
Guess where I was the following Sunday?? Mac
