My favorite memory of him was while at Schwab on Oki.
We would swim behind the barracks in the Bay.
One of the other Marines bumped into to something and called out to me because I had the scuba mask. The water was not its usual crystal clear as a storm had passed through.
So I dove under to see what he hit. I could see white things which I knew to be generations of Budweiser empties than I saw a sneaker...than I saw a white sock, than I saw a calf.....than I swam to shore three feet above the surface.
In my mind there was a body being feasted on by coral snakes and they would see me as fresh meat and swarm.
On shore everyone was like "What did you see?" and it was like that part in Stand By Me where the fat kid says "Whatever you do....don't go in there!" Than the other guys strip me of my mask and immediately go in there but couldn't find anything so they thought I was fucked up..
Later that day they pulled one of the line company Marines from the water. he had got drunk the night before, fell off the cliff and ended up in the water.
First Sgt Bennington called me in his office and with his sort of Southern drawl asked...
"Lanch C'pl McLaine....did you see a dead body in the water this morning?"
So I told him the story and that I kind of freaked out.
His reply was to wIt
"You freaked out when you saw the body? I guess that's understandable......I've never seen a whole one. Dismissed."

Worst memory of First Sgt Terry Bennington.
I had just arrived at 3/8 from ITS and I was thrust into a MCRESS inspections.
During the wall locker portion I was looking perfect. My shit was sweetly pressed and all beautifully aligned it looked like a picture from the Guidebook. I was kind of shocked by the Marine next to me as his shit looked like shit and the Major went through his ass a bit. My only gig was starch in my woodlands and the Major was pleased so he wanted to throw me a softball....
"Lance Corporal name your First Sgt in your chain of command?"
I froze "Sir. The Lance Corporals First Sgt is........Sir. The Lance Corporal does not know but will find out."
The Major uttered "Knowledge" and walked to the next wall locker.
First Sgt Bennington got in my face with wild eyes and said " You don't know who your First Sgt is?"
I could hear the Corporals behind the wall lockers to my rear groaning as he walked away to rejoin the Major and inspecting team.
What did they expect from a Lance with about 6 months TIS?

According to recent reports, up to 30,000 Afghan individuals who have received Special Immigration Visas would be placed at Fort Bliss and Fort McCoy among other bases in the immediate future.
The individuals will be granted visas under a program, which provides asylum to Afghans who worked for the U.S. during the war effort. The Pentagon temporarily deployed 6,000 U.S. troops to aid in the evacuation of U.S. citizens and Afghan refugees.

When I was an E-2 I was asked who my First Sgt was and I said TOP. The First Sgt who ask me was from another Company and just laughed at me.
More so from our perspective......we have all the freedoms, opportunity and privlidge in the world and these are the clowns we let lead us.
