The AR15 Picture Thread

I'll be the first to admit that I haven't tried them all. Here's what (I think) I do know:

For a precision UPPER, the Vltor MUR is I believe a premier choice. Best one of which I'm aware, and has been for almost 20 years. Forged - stout as can be. Not a lightweight, either. Well engineered and well executed. Barrel extensions may require a tad of Locktite, since it is designed to work with anything. Guaranteed to rattle a little on most lowers, because it is purposely designed to work with ALL uppers. If yours is tight on your lower, it's due to tolerance stacking.

SanTan takes a different approach. For a precision upper/lower receiver set, SanTan is hard to beat. Let's go tight on tolerances!!! Don't try to slap your SanTan upper on anything but a SanTan lower. Plan on a solid 30 seconds with your heat gun on high to get that Proof Research CFW barrel extension to fit. The now discontinued Young MFG National Match bolt carriers would not even fit inside the early SanTan receivers.

Another thing with SanTan - The anodizing so so good that it makes the other aluminum parts on your gun look kinda cheap.

Are you still making barrels with kac's intermediate gas length?

Had an AR with a Triji 1-8, UBR, and a 13.5” NSR that wasn’t a whole lot of fun to shoot at anything but man sized or bigger steel (reticle center covered a full mil, the damn thing was hard enough to zero) - decided to turn it into a wrong handed MK12 Mod H, and it’s now a ton of fun. Lighter, handier, and 3” plates at 200 yards are easy pickings.

I’m sure LPVOs have their place in an actual tactical environment, but I forgot how much easier “aim small, miss small” is with a traditional scope and the fine reticle.
Specs/details?

No. I ran out of all my special order KAC length gas tubes.

I actually only went with this KAC length so I'd have a gas system that would work with a long since discontinued KAC URX integral flip up front sight.

The new "standard" in intermediate length, for lack of a better term, designed by Eric Kincel (head of R&D for BCM) and John Noveske (Noveske Rifle Works), works equally well and is of course much more readily available. It's only a fraction of an inch longer than the KAC.

Alright, thanks for the response.

I was looking at potentially utilizing kac's intermediate length for a dedicated suppressor host with extremely short dwell length. Noveske's iirc is roughly .4" longer and won't work for the length barrel I was looking to run.

Do you still have the specifications for the kac length? Like exact length to the gas port and length of the gas tube needed?

No, sorry. I'm afraid that was over 13 years ago.

Don’t Criterion do a intermediate barrel? Pretty sure you can get one from CLE or Craddock too..

I don't think Criterion does.

I'm looking to do a 12.5 with KAC's intermediate length. Standard intermediate is too long for that application. I'd have to go 13.X with standard 12.5 with kac is similar in dwell length to 11.5 mid.

If KAC uppers weren't so difficult to find atm I'd just buy one and get it chopped and gas port opened. I'll probably just wait and do this. I refuse to overpay for things. I can buy them at like $2200 but I'm not going to do that.

In the beginning it was going to be a mk12 clone. I got the handguard and rail correct 🤷‍♂️ It’s a blast to shoot

Back together for today. Going to replace current HG with a PRI CF version at some point.

A number of years ago I had two NRA High Power A2s made. One by Compass Lake, the second by White Oak Precision. I shot them a bit, but then life happened, and I put them away for a long time. I recently gotten bit by the bug again, so I had the Compass Lake converted to a flat top with an Aero Precision Enchanced upper, a fully free floated AP handguard, a low profile gas block, a Geissele SSA-E, and a Vortex Viper PST GII 5-25. I'll likely toss a Magpul PRS G3 on at some point.

The White Oak is also getting the same treatment.

(ignore the bench collapsing... :) )

This is my first MSTN SuperLite build using V Seven billet upper/lower and rail. I am in danger of keeping this one. The bare rifle topped out at 5 LB 1.5 OZ. This was only possible using the Noveske HFCL Skinny 14.5" barrel (20.5 OZ) and Young Superlite bolt carrier, no longer made. V Seven titanium and aluminum everything, with TriggerTech competition trigger and Geissele ACH. Matt McLearn did his usual superlative pin and weld on the V Seven Furion brake. I'm still running the Vlor A5 recoil system, because it is worth the slight weight penalty. This rifle doesn't move when you shoot it. How about that way cool Scalarworks Aimpoint Micro mount? Waited a long time for those!

@MSTN

How are the TT triggers holding up after heavy use? I’ve got a Diamond sitting around in a spare lower and am thinking about swapping out a Larue MBT 2S for it in my primary AR15.

I have had my trigger tech diamond in my main lower for a couple years now. It is my go to setup, but I am not a high round count guy. I do a lot of groundhog hunting with my ar's, and they do get some range time. They also see plenty of dust, and I have noticed no problems.

Yeah it was used for an SPR upper (for sale btw) but I’m asking about how they hold up for high round count guns.

Seekins .223 Wylde w/ Geissele SSA-E

Really likes 855A1 and Hornady VMAX during barrel break in. SMK 77 and H4895 need a little work.

Yet another evolution. SWFA 1-6 went down so I grabbed a PST 1-6 on store credit. First outing was positive, its optically superior to the SWFA, illumination is definitely rainy day bright.

Was it the swfa ss?
Yes, the 1-6x24 HD. The mag ring magically froze on me. Unknown as to how it happened, just went to dryfire one day and boom, frozen. Instead of waiting on a backorder (their whole line has been “backordered” for over a year), I cashed in store credit for the PST.

Ehh, I like the SWFA, I like the turrets and FFP better. The Vortex is simply better in the glass, FOV, and illumination departments.

To be fair, the PST 2 is a newer optic compared to the older, unchanged SWFA.
