I recently purchased a .300 BLK and I want to use it for hunting whitetail. I search everywhere for the Barnes 120&110gr tac-tx but nobody has them in stock anywhere. I ended up purchasing some Barnes 120gr jacketed hollow point FB ammo. So the question is can I use this ammo on deer? Thanks in advance!

It's listed as varmint ammo. So it's likely designed to fragment. So maybe you will be picking pieces out of the meat, and penerration may not be as high on a shoulder shot.

Not my choice for deer but it will likely depend on shot placement. Remember a small light bullet can kill a deer.

Yes, the barnes all cooper hunting ammo is very good, better choice, but not magic. This is a good round, at least as good as the 30-30 ammo I used as a kid on Mule Deer. The key still is shot placement.

yeah I didn’t really want to get the hollow points but it’s the only thing I could find. I can’t find any videos on it so I have no idea how it performs.

I get around 1720 fps out of an 8” barrel with their 147 gr FMJ reman so this is probably similar and would be a good deer round.

Another thing to note and research is the rounds expansion/fragmentation threshold.

Quite a few companies have released stuff with rounds designed for 308 velocities and have an extremely poor threshold for 300 blk. Some are already below that velocity threshold coming out of a short barrel.

Tac tx is 1350 fps iirc
Sig 120 is 1400 fps iirc

So it's worth a phone call to the manufacturersl if you plan on using a different round like a ballistic tip or soft point.
