Need to taste the kool-aid. Question about 6.5 SAUM

Match custom rifle w/ accessories for ELR setup w/ a first rate smith, optic, and all you need to reload a 6.5 SAUM for under $6K ... pretty sweet indeed, and a $3K optic nonetheless. That optic must have looked rather strange on your 308 Savage. Hope the SAUM goes well for you. It wouldn't be...

    Gunsmithing Barrel Vise

Tubb's 2K vise works just fine. Not too expensive and easy to set up. Find a scarificial leather belt and cut a few pieces to act as a cushion between the metal surfaces. I have had mine for 5 years and done dozens of barrel changes with it.

    Gunsmithing Stock bedding necessary?

Compared to the total cost of the rifle, bedding isn't that much. It will almost certainly improve performance. The metal parts and the inlet will have some variability between them - fact of life. The only way to get the stress free glove fit is with a bedding job. It is worth it and you will...

Gunsmithing Notching a Remington 700 feed ramp.

You can pay a gunsmith to do it, or you can mark it w/ a dremel and go to town. It's not that big a deal to use a dremel ... just carefully mark a V-notch of where the cut needs to be and go slow and steady. Sure, it's not going to win any awards, but it will get the job done and it works just fine.

Need to taste the kool-aid. Question about 6.5 SAUM

Take a deep breath buddy, I'm only trying to help. You post that you have a 308 Savage gun and then talk big talk about shooting 2000+ yds away w/ flatlines but are not in the mood for spending on custom hardware. The longest I've gone to is 1290 yards, and I've needed to invest quite a bit in a...

Need to taste the kool-aid. Question about 6.5 SAUM

Seems like a wild goose chase to me, and kinda weird that on the one hand you're talking about shooting the most expensive projectiles out there at super long range but yet are balking at the cost of custom hardware. Apologize if this sounds harsh, but your ideas seem somewhat schizo to me. If...

    Remington 5R 24" Load Data

45 gr of Varget pushing a 175 SMK and Winchester brass is a winning combo. Another good one is 43.4 gr of IMR 4064 pushing a 175 SMK. 2.800" COAL. Basically, any of the 308 loads that Dan Newberry has recommended have worked awesome in my 308 24" 700 5R.

    6.5 Creedmoor 101

If you're waiting on bullets, something you may want to consider is buying some factory ammo and just reload your fired cases. 10 boxes should last a couple range trips. Also, since you're new to the caliber and the rifle it will take another variable out of the equation and you'll get to...

Is the basic atlas worth the money?

Depends on your budget. Atlas bipods are nice. I have 2 of them. They also command a premium price. I also have 3 Harris bipods that get the job done just nicely too and I have never found myself wondering ... I'd of been able to make that shot if only I had had an atlas. A Harris deploys...

Remington 700 5R upgrades. Advice appreciated

Sorry, this is a load of crap ... you're telling me that clamping rings on a twisted base is going to be "aligned better"? Good luck with that buddy. What's going to show if you have a misaligned system is not the base, but putting the scope into rings mounted on that base. There are a lot more...

Remington 700 5R upgrades. Advice appreciated

Tac Ops uses a 2 piece system and swears by it - Mike R. Knows his stuff. I have used a couple of sets and they work great. Much easer to top feed in a hurry. As far as misalignment, explain to me how a 1 piece base is going to solve that problem if the holes are drilled off center? Total...

Remington 700 5R upgrades. Advice appreciated

I have a 5R. It shoots really well, and with the right load has performed on the same level as two custom 308s I have had ... your experience may vary. If I was you, this is how I would upgrade it: - Keep the stock and get a triad tactical stock pack. It has Velcro shims that you can install to...

    Pillar Bedding vs Chassis System

It is absolutely unnecessary to bed a quality chassis system. In fact, you could also probably get away without bedding many Manners or McM stocks too. I have a rifle that is set up on a pillar bedded McM A5, and another on a Manners T5 mini-chassis ... absolutely zero difference in performance...
