Newsmax, ya know I love you. One of the best sources of conservative media out there (along with OAN). But SHEEZ, what have you been doing lately?

By now, I'm sure you've see the "ad" featuring what we know now is an AI image of President Reagan talking about how bad "tariffs" are (in the long run). Well, believe it or not, I saw this ad first on Newsmax, of all places!!! 🤪 To be fair, the ad does disclaim that the source was an Ontario, Canada govt. agency. I had wondered why they even aired the ad in the first place? Did they need the money that bad? Or, were they just trying to give equal time to the opposition?

Fast forward to this morning, and I see Newsmax is all over the controversy. Pres. Trump has "cancelled" trade negotiations with Canada over the ad, which the Ronald Reagan foundation claims is fake (AI, edited etc. etc.). They just spent 5 min. with a couple of talking heads over how bad the ad is, etc. etc. etc. and what the ramifications are. They showed clips of the ad as they were discussing it. And then, they go immediately to commercial.

    Guess which commercial? 🤪

C'mon, Newsmax, you need to fire your ad manager! S/he is not serving you well.

A lot of their articles are taken from AP/Reuters, etc. You know which slant they are given.

If you read the shit that's posted . . . one thing they can't do to you is take away your discernment.

The ad was not an AI generated voice of Reagan. I’ve watched two lengthy addresses from Reagan speaking on tariffs. One of which was the source material for the voice on the Canadian ad. The Ad changes the order of some of the statements he made, but when one listens to the original speech of about 5 min length, it’s dead obvious what Reagan’s stance on tariffs was. And matches the sentiment expressed in the Ad. That ad certainly didn’t twist his words and use them out of context.
I’m still dumbfounded how many people I have met in the south where I live who either thought, or still think other countries pay the tariffs rather than the importer and eventually the consumer. I had to explain this to my college educated father and it took a bit for it to sink in before he came to the conclusion, “this isn’t going to be good for anyone”
All along I’ve thought, the logic of using a trade deficit to calculate tariffs is like being angry that Vermont is not buying more maple syrup from Louisiana so we put a tariff on their syrup. We are not growing sugar maples in the south anytime soon.
If someone can put the cork back in the bottle of a global economy I’d love to see it. The ease of rapid transportation helped usher in the current global economy and most of us benefit from it every day, every time we buy something off Amazon or post something on this forum from our IPhone. The current market for relatively inexpensive but relatively high quality rifle scopes is a perfect example. And of course we love our Japanese glass and Schott glass(which has plants all over the planet by the way)
If the President truly wanted to put his money where his mouth is, all of the stuff he tries to hawk to his fans would be Made in America. The majority of Trump related merchandise is made out of the country. Like the “built in the USA” Trump phones that were sourced from China and screwed together here. (They later removed references to made in the USA from the website) Or the “Trump Bible” that was printed in China when we have dozens of capable printing house here. 90% of MAGA hats and shirts on the market were made in China and Nicaragua etc.
If you want to pay $80 for a grill scrubber that wanted to be “made in America” but ultimately couldn’t, and want to dive into the logistics of modern manufacturing, this is a fun video that addresses what is at the heart of all this mess and that, not only will tariffs not bring back manufacturing to the US, but could we afford it if we did?

All of the below is my humble opinion:

First, I'll be sure to never do any sort of business with you, and I'll tell anyone I have contact with the same.

As far as tariffs go- TARIFFS WORK! Even Trump's detractors on tariffs have admitted it because the numbers prove it. If they didn't work, foreign nations wouldn't be doing everything they can to minimize tariffs by negotiating with Trump. Consumers have the free will to avoid tariffs by buying "Made in USA" products, or "Assembled in USA" goods- those labels are regulated by the FTC, btw. Or, we can choose an imported product that comes from a nation with lower tariffs than other nations. It's no different than when a foreign manufacturer raises prices- the consumer can choose NOT to buy that product.

Of course, those choices are fewer in product categories in which, for example, China has the vast majority of production. Small countertop appliances is an example of that. But we're seeing more and more smart phones, tablets, laptops, and other electronics being made in places like Malaysia, Philippines, Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, etc. Large appliances too.

Preventing foreign nations from having too big a percentage of any given industry is a choice we Americans collectively can make, and in some product categories the USA made product is within a few dollars of the asian product. You might think you're saving money by buying, for example, a chinese oem optic, but you ignore the societal costs of the loss of entire industries & jobs, as well as helping the CCP beta test their products for their military, and of course the revenue all goes back to our biggest enemy the CCP.

Your maple syrup analogy is laughable because it dismisses important details of foreign trade and makes an intellectually dishonest effort to equate foreign trade with American domestic business.

Hate Trump all you want, but the official Trump MAGA products page shows about 100 percent of the stuff is labeled "Made in USA". I checked. See link below.

BTW, more manufacturing came back thanks to Trump's specific efforts, than under barry soetoro and beijing biden combined- because those two traitors took China's money instead.

IMHO, you're just really cheap, and anti-American, like most dems.

Tariff’s work. But so does free trade

Reagan was in essence a free trade supporter. Less government interference in everything, including trade.

But Reagan also recognized that tariffs could be used at times. Especially when another country was caught engaging in “really” poor behavior… such as dumping. (Selling products below manufacturing cost in America and other countries, while jacking them up on the home market). Which the big Japanese motorcycle companies were doing in the 1970’s to establish their dominance… while destroying the rest of the worlds’ motorcycle industry. Reagan used tariffs as a punishment…. Putting a large tax on Japanese motorcycles over 800 cc as I recall, to give Harley Davidson a fighting chance at survival. The Japs also we’re dumping in the car and light truck industries… FJ40 Land Cruisers were “dumped” in Africa to destroy Jeep and Land Rover. Cars were dumped in America to destroy Detroit (which was doing a pretty good job of destroying itself thanks to unions and quality… but that’s another rant)

Remember why Trump is pushing tariffs. To get “the other guy” to lower theirs.

American workers and manufacturers have been getting screwed by ONE WAY tariffs for years. In other words, protectionism. Trump’s push for Tariffs has been all about mirroring. And pushing back on countries to stop trying to access OUR markets while protecting their industries from us. Keeping their products on our shelves while not allowing American products on their shelves.

Both Reagan and Trump are not seeking to replace taxes with tariff income. Or block free trade. Quite the opposite. Global trade is good and they were and are banking on the idea that the world will want products made in America by American Workers and that those products won’t be shit quality ChiCkm garbage made in slave labor camps, toxic waste dumps or by people using their toes instead of a bench vice.

Tariffs are a means to an end. Not a way of life. There is a reason we have an “interstate Commerce Clause” preventing interstate tariffs. The founders recognized that tariffs between states would ruin America. By saying zero tariffs, all states have/had equal playing fields… in theory. No different than tariffs between countries.

That, in fact, was what NAFTA was supposed to do. Pull down all tariffs between US, Canada and Mexico and ease/promote trade. (And create a trade block to compete with the EU which was emerging). But while the USA virtually eliminated all tariffs… Canada negotiated all kinds of “protection.” So did Mexico. “We have to protect our softwood lumber industry…. We’re keeping that tariff.” “We have to protect our wheat… we’re keeping that tariff.” And as usual the U.S. backed down, opened its borders to trade while Canada and Mexico claimed they were all for free tradenas long as it was one way and in their favor. And NAFTA was a total disaster. Trump Killed it first term. Why? Because the U.S. politicians and bureaucrats, as usual, fucked the American people and negotiated a bad deal. While giving Mexico and Canada an uneven playing fieldz.

So I’ll argue that Reagan was very much against tariffs, BUT was happy to use them to protect American Jobs and Industry. Trump seems also to be against interfering with trade. And constantly has said that he believes mirroring and punitive tariffs are the way to force other countries to stop protecting their markets while dumping shit on us.

    And it’s a good argument.

BTW, Japan learned their lesson in the 1980’s because Harley Davidson was a very small quiet shot over the bow. The real target were the Japanese car companies that were dumping cars and, by extension, steel on the U.S. Japan’s response was to open hundreds of car plants in the U.S. and employ Americans. Targeting union-free “right to work” states. And shipping in components made in Japan. They still have huge tariffs on American cars and motorcycles. But at least they recognized the value of coming back with an olive branch of jobs and factories. (An arrangement that has worked well for both countries). (That said, Japan also crashed and burned in the early 1990’s after spending all their money buying American buildings annd movie studios… only to have their bubble burst). Until then, Japan, Inc. was all about “business is war” and “you won the war but we won the peace.” After that they have been a much better global citizen business-wise.

China will do no such thing. They have 1.5 billion people to keep busy and they regard protectionism as economic warfare. And are bent on the destruction of the U.S.

If the U.S. is to stand up against China it needs to stop the hemmirage of $$to China. Block their ability to sell toxic slave labor shit here. End their monopolies in strategic metals and their belt road initiative. And build a coalition of “free” nations that are able to trade “without” the ChiCom juggernaut driving the bus.

Unfortunately, China “owns” so many politicians, governments, nations, companies, etc. they can order their minions to go full Trump Derangement Syndrome for the next 3.5 years while trying to further undermine our political system… and hopefully put a communist lackey on the throne in Washington in 2028 who will undo all Trumps work and smash America once and for all.

It’s not about Tariffs. They are merely weapons in a much bigger picture. Reagan brought down the Soviet Union by building more bombs and forcing them into an arms race they could not afford… all while hating nuclear weapons and war. Reagan was about peace through strength.

Trump is looking to do the same with China… but since we can’t spend them into oblivion and the Chicoms are not going to fall for the same tactic used on the USSR… trade is the new weapon. Peace through strength is now “open trade through tariffs”

We have been at war with China since 1949. And it was even a hot war in ‘51 and Vietnam. Probably in Chad and Angola, too. But it’s been a very hot economic war since Tienamen Square when China said the solution to its problems was to let the people get rich destroying America. And have used tariffs and protectionism around the world… to do it.

Tariffs should not be a “way of life.”‘ they are weapons that should be unsheathed when your opponent is attacking YOU using them. So opening your borders while letting the other guy close theirs is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Not even a good knife. More like a spork.

And mirroring is a good way to approach it. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, right? You think you need a rice tariff China? You need a softwood tariff Canada? Ok, so do we. Exactly the same as yours. Word for word. Dollar for dollar. You can’t complain when we are merely doing what you are doing. You drop yours and I’ll drop mine and we’ll let the free market decide? Sounds fair!!

Of course then begins the Rheeeeeeeeeeeee. From those happy to sell out America in the first place.

Yes. The Canadian ethos is “rules for thee but not for me”. The US has been the rich uncle paying for everything forever.

What are the tariffs imposed on USA goods in our top 10 trade countries?

Is it possible to have free trade with mentioned?

Our cars, trucks and SUV's along with parts are massively tarifed almost everywhere.

Our ag products are targeted. Wheat, rice, beef, poultry, pork. Soybeans, Sorghum. Dairy and nuts (tree nuts). Almost everywhere.

Forest products. Particularly by Canada and Europe. Chinese buy our wood, do the value add, then send it worldwide, BTW. As Chinese wood products. We don't get the value add.

Steel and aluminum and copper. Almost everywhere.

    Household appliances. Almost everywhere.

Pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Including generic drugs. Mostly other countries just rip off our patents.

Bourbon and other alcoholic beverages. Generally our brewery industry sets up in other countries. And everyone has better wine than us, so we aren't 'really' competing there. But our domestic distilled spirits are massively hit. And are popular worldwide.

    Textiles

Not sure about electronics... We once were dominent not just in chips, but in the chip making equipment. A lot of that has probably gone overseas, too. And our stuff gets blocked. That said, we may have lost the competitive edge on that....

This is from the top of my head. I am sure I missed a lot. Or maybe some things are out dated... it's been a while since I read the news magazines and WSJ daily. Mainly because they are just a bunch of shit now. But I doubt much has changed.

So, they are fucking our eyes out and scream when they get their own treatment?

Wonder who negotiated those trade agreements?

    NAFTA comes to mind.
