    Ultra Lightweight Hunting Rifle

Man, when did that happen? That sucks... the Fieldcraft is a really neat little rifle, and tailor-made for this sort of use case. I wonder if they just weren't selling, or what...

    Tikka, Bergara or Howa..

I only have experience with Tikka and Howa, and between the two, for your purposes, I would pick the Tikka. Between the two (Tikka and Howa), each has their advantages (the Tikka with the easily replaceable bolt handle, the Howa with the flat bottom action and built-in recoil lug) and...

    MyBighorn isnt setting off CCI450's

I had a similar problem with two different rifles, with two root causes: 1) Aftermarket action from a quality manufacturer, root cause was shmutz (that's a gun smith's technical term, look it up) on the firing pin/in the firing pin channel; said shmutz was slowing down the firing pin and...

So, when you get your hands on a brand new rifle in a large caliber, do you:

I always give new rifles the once-over in that regard... an initial scrubbing to get machining/storage oil/grease off of them, and ensuring that the bore is clear and in good shape. If nothing else, this gives me a chance to familiarize myself with the mechanical and cosmetic condition of the rifle.

So, when you get your hands on a brand new rifle in a large caliber, do you:

Personally, option 2. That said, it was a Desert Tech, so if the bolt let go it would have gone into my shoulder rather than my eye.

Is it worth keeping a 308 around?

IMO, .308 is worth keeping around for the simple fact that it is almost always a good option for most rifle-appropriate shooting scenarios. Rarely is it the best option, but it's almost always a good one. Versatility is what the .308 does better than pretty much anything else I can think of.

    bolt thrust pressure

I'm by no means an expert in this area, and to be honest, I may not even have enough knowledge to be considered an amateur, but I would think that there are still too many variables in regard to the parameters you've mentioned. Questions like, what is the finish on the chamber? What is the...

    Gunsmithing Custom die leaving marks

The inside of the die can be given a light polish pretty easily with JB Bore Paste, KG2, or similar. It doesn't take much, but it can make a big difference.

Shilen Alternut System w/ Remington 700

This is the first I have heard of the Alternut, and it looks like an interesting concept in that the tenon threads are separate from the threads with which the nut interfaces. I suppose that the idea is to leave the breach end of the barrel as thick as possible for as much of the breach as...

Rifle Scopes Anyone ever use their illumination?

Yeah, for some night time critter control.

Rifle Scopes Is this the new budget scope to beat? SWFA is on notice!

Sir, while I greatly appreciate the time you took to provide through-scope pics, I feel that I must alert you to what can only be a serious hazard to your safety as a shooter; in the second pic, your weapon has apparently been assembled backwards, as the bolt handle and safety can both be...

PSA - Fit between Ruger American Ranch and Boyd's Pro Varmint stock

Long story short, I have a Ruger American Ranch (chambered in 45 Raptor...-ish) that I dropped into a Boyd's Pro Varmint stock. In a lot of ways, the fit is great... the barrel channel is correctly shaped (if somewhat odd looking with the wide fore end of the Pro Varmint and the relatively...

Wells Fargo sues Gunwerks in Federal Court

Something to note here; local/city grants are VERY rarely made in cash... they're almost always in the form of taxes (usually property) that won't be owed. I can't speak to this particular situation, but that's what I saw when my then-girlfriend worked for a small-ish city in Texas.

    Best bolt lube for PRS

The Crunch Enhancer! You know, it's a non-nutritive cereal varnish. It's semi-permiable. It's not osmotic. What it does is it coats and seals the flake, prevents the milk from penetrating it.

    3 R rifling

That's pretty much my gut feeling as well, based on reading that I've done... but I don't have the apples-to-apples experience to back it up. I have an AR Performance barrel installed on an upper that I recently finished building, but I have not shot it yet... however, it is the only barrel I...

    MDRX/MDRX SE

Looking at the announcement for these variants of the MDR, I have to admit (as a '19 MDR owner) to being envious of the higher durability polymer; I haven't had any issues, but more stronger is more better. Regarding the trigger, I have the JARD sear...

Gunsmithing Projectile diameter vs nominal bore diameter... how tight is too tight?

If it makes you feel any better, I was getting those numbers with a Mitutoyo QuantuMike rather than a set of calipers. Regarding your point about accuracy vs. precision, point taken; I would have to be certain of my instrument's calibration in order to have any confidence in its accuracy.

Gunsmithing Projectile diameter vs nominal bore diameter... how tight is too tight?

I know that it's a bit ridiculous to go into the sub-thou range on measurements, but I wanted to convey the OD of the projectiles as accurately as possible. In any event, the bore in question is a factory Ruger piece; I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't setting myself up for a kaboom. I...

Gunsmithing Projectile diameter vs nominal bore diameter... how tight is too tight?

In my 450 Bushmaster/45 Raptor bolt gun saga, I have decided that there aren't enough .452 (450 BM/45R) diameter rifle projectiles to make me happy, so I'm playing with swaging down some copper jacketed .458 projectiles; specifically, some 325 gr Hornady FTXs. After swaging them down in two...
