    Gunsmithing Recoil Lug Fit

How much play\clearance should there be where the recoil lug slips over the barrel tenon? As tight and precise while still allowing a "slip" fit (no tapping or driving it on)or plenty loose so that it just "rattles" into place when you tip the barrel down? Does it make a difference in your...

Remington 700 SPS Tactical or SPS Varmint in 308?

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical or SPS Varmint in 308? I have a .308 varmint that shoots like "a house afire" with Varget and 168 SMK's. It is in a heavy A-5 and balances at the recoil lug, making it easy to shoot and not bad to carry.

New SPS for my collection - thoughts on upgrades?

Re: New SPS for my collection - thoughts on upgrades? 44.0 grains of Varget behind a 168 SMK seated twenty thousandths off the lands will shoot in the 3's in my SPS with boring regularity. Get someone to load you some and see what happens...

Remington 700 VTR 308 win, What do you think?

Re: Remington 700 VTR 308 win, What do you think? A friend of mine has one and it shoots pretty good, no problem for him to get half inch groups at 100 with handloads.

    Fire lap and Set back

I'm going to rechamber and set the barrel back on a .308 SPS after truing the action and installing a new .250" trued recoil lug. I'm thinking of fire lapping this factory barrel before any of this work begins as it seems to me the "negative" aspect of fire lapping is moving the throat forward...

    Gunsmithing remington 700 .308 to .243?

Re: remington 700 .308 to .243? .308 is one of the easiest rounds to reload for accuracy, and once you learn to dope conditions for it you'll be even better with any other cartridge you decide to try.

    Gunsmithing X Mark Pro Trigger

Re: X Mark Pro Trigger I've seen one polished (not stoned) and adjusted to 1.5 lbs. with a clean break and no backlash. Externally adjustable screw was left in place. Safety works reliably and holds firmly. Lucky maybe, but it sure was nice.

    rem 700 reciver info?

Re: rem 700 reciver info? Late 60's or early 70's, a desirable receiver for a build. Doesn't matter which one you choose, both should work out great. And yes it was customary for the receiver to be drilled and tapped on the port side for other sight set ups.

    155 grain bullets

I'd sure like to get some (as few as 10 and up to a box) 155 grain bullets to try in my .308 if someone has some to share. I'd pay of course, both for the bullets and the shipping...
