Need suggestions: Higher rear bag -AND- shooting glasses that don't fog

For the protective eyewear, check out the ESS product line. I'm a really good tester of anti-fog coatings (I sweat like a stuck pig). I've had pretty good luck with ESS, their coatings work very well. In fact, talking to customer support, they recommend using only warm water to clean them. No...

    Lapua 7mm

Thanks BapZander, I scurried my little ass over to Graf & Sons website. They still had the Lapua 7mm 180gr Scenar-L in stock. I ran a quick and dirty test, 10 each, between Berger 180 Hybrids and the Lapua 180 Scenar-L. Ran weights and base-to-ogive. First, the Scenar-Ls have an `.020" longer...

    bolt gun drawings

Drawings like these would make outstanding posters, or maybe t-shirts? BTW, +100 on the choice of subjects and artistic talent. I've been told that I can't draw a straight line...even if I used a ruler.

Garmin Montana 650T, worth the money???

Doesn't have the biggest screen, but look at the Delorme GPS. Very well built plus it can be wirelessly connected to a sat linked text system. Personnaly, I wish I had a setup like this a few years back. After completing an ice climb in Hungtington Ravine on Mt. Washington, White Mountains in...

Gunsmithing Neat little jeweling tool I made

Not trying to hijack this thread. In a pinch, or if you can't find your jeweling tool there's a workaround. A standard pencil with an unused eraser works pretty darn well. Or, using a clapped out drill chuck you can use Cratex sticks.

Rifle Scopes suggest quality eye pro while behind quality glass

Check out ESS. Lightweight, no distortion, wide variety of styles. One of the Crossbow series has thin temple pieces so that they're very comfortable under ear pro. I have them and they are comfortable. Some of the lenses/styles are rated as military ballistic eye pro. Last, but not least, you...

shot prone for the first time today...dude.........WTF

To the OP: a thick pad is not what you want your bipod or rear bag on. You gotta be comfy, but you still kinda' wanna' feel the ground under you. Unless you can get a standard mat from Midway in time, you're better off using a piece of carpet.

Fieldcraft Lock Picking tools and training material

If you look online there are international lock picking tournaments. Most of the competitors are hobbyists, not professional locksmiths. Just like people like to have bragging rights about solving Rubik's Cube or a SoDuKo puzzle. Every mechanic, DIYer or just having an emergency toolkit in your...

Advanced Marksmanship Alternatives to prone for long range - Disabled shooter

I shot with someone at a match who also had a "surgically repaired" back. One of the things that worked really well was a firm, foam wedge. It ran length-wise, from midline out almost to the armpit on his triggee side. By being able to relax and letting the foam support his upper body he was...

shot prone for the first time today...dude.........WTF

Let me get this straight. You're going to a class THIS weekend and you've just started to shoot prone NOW? What type of surface were you shooting off of? I can pretty much guess that the rifle was hopping all over the place when you fired. The way a rifle shoots off a bench and from the prone...

Gunsmithing barrel opinions for a savage

Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply is THE person/place to go to for Savage barrels. You have a question, he'll have or get the answer for you. He only carries Shilen and Criterion barrels. He dropped McGowan for reasons he didn't feel like discussing. I've used used Criterion barrels in...

Rifle Scopes Scopes for Air Rifles

Overall, I think a PCP (Pre-Charged Pneumatic) air rifle would be the best way to go. That's pretty much all you see at target matches & field target. Unless things have changed, I was told that a spring powered air rifle is very abusive to scopes. There are actually 2 recoil events: when the...

    Savage conversion to 6.5 SAUM

If the 6.5 SAUM is based off of the 7 SAUM you'd be better off if you start with a magnum action. If you base your 6.5 SAUM off of a .308 you have to replace the bolt head, baffle and firing pin assembly. I did something similar with a 6mm BR to 7 SAUM. The 6BR and the .308 use the same bolt head.

Kestrel 4500 and Crosswind Headwind function

To make the crosswind function work for you, there are 2 things you need. The free-swiveling tripod attachment and the bluetooth feature. Set your compass for the direct to target bearing. As the Kestrel swings the crosswind updates go to the smartphone. There is a downloadable app, free, that...
