Need advice ... which 7mm PRC?

Considering a move to the 7mm PRC and would like some advice on which rifle(s) to consider and which rifle(s) to avoid. Are there good "off the shelf" rifles out there or should I pay for a custom build? I would like to stay in the $2500 -$5000 range if possible. Is there a good selection of...

    Question for Quickload users

I shoot an FN SPR A3G with a 24" fluted barrel. I recently installed a muzzle break which adds roughly 2" to my barrel length. I use Quickload to get a starting point for my load development. The question is whether to use 24" as the barrel length value or 26". Any advice is greatly appreciated. Bob

    Need recommendation for Nosler 28

Looking to add a new rifle. Currently, my go-to rifle is an FN SPR A3G, chambered in .308. Want to get a Nosler 28. I do not hunt, so weight is not a concern. Range shooting only. Looking for best bang for the buck (no pun intended). Bob

OCW load development - what is meant by "a caliber's depth"?

In Dan Newberry's instructions for OCW load development (reference step #6), he recommends seating the bullet "a caliber's depth" into the case, or to magazine length--whichever is shorter. Can someone tell me what is meant by the term "a caliber's depth"? Thanks. Bob

Need help interpreting OCW test results

This is the result of an OCW test of the Hornady 178 Amax. The rifle is a Savage 110FP w/1:10 twist. The powder is Varget, with test loads ranging from 43.0 gr. to 45.1 gr., in increments of 0.3 gr. When I look at these results, I see what appears to be an accuracy node from 43.0 to 43.6...

    I've never had this happen...

My "pet" load is a .308 Hornady 208 Amax, seated at or near the lands, using 48.0 grains of Power Pro 2000 MR. This load generates 2600+ FPS. Unable to find any Power Pro 2000 MR powder, I picked up a pound of Varget. Since I had no experience shooting the 208 Amax using Varget, I loaded an...

2-stage sizing process yields very low runout

I read an article by German Salazar in which he described a 2-stage sizing process that includes both neck sizing and body sizing. Salazar shows that this approach produces ammunition that has extremely low levels of runout. For unturned brass it is better to neck size first, then body size...

Which should you find first --- charge weight or seating depth?

Until yesterday, everything I had read about load development testing was based on techniques (ladder and OCW tests) that first identify the proper charge weight and then identify the proper seating depth. I read an article by a Sinclair reloading technician (see link below), outlining a...

    Adjusting bipod

My bipod mounts on a rail under the foreend that permits the bipod to be positioned at the front of the foreend, at the rear of the foreend, and at any point in between. My question is "where is the optimal location for stability and recoil management?" It would appear that positioning the...

Segregating brass by manufacturer - how important?

For those who segregate brass, how important is it to segregate by brass manufacturer? Example: Imagine 2 cases that have been prepared to the same specifications. They weigh the same. The distance from the case head to the shoulder is the same. The neck tension is the same. The only...

Shoulder bumping --- need your thoughts

Beginning with my next load, I will bump the shoulder back on my brass. Until now, I have neck sized my brass. I will be using a Lee collet neck size die to size the neck and a Redding body size die to bump the shoulder. I will be using a digital caliper and Sinclair comparator body and bump...

Does anyone full size AND neck size their brass?

    Range Report Optimal barrel temperature?

Just read an article on AccurateShooter.com about using a pocket infrared thermometer to monitor barrel heat. The article explains what happens when your barrel gets too hot, but fails to define "too hot." My question to anyone who uses an infrared thermometer to monitor barrel temperature is...

    OCW test --- interpreting results

Bullet: Hornady Amax 178 Powder: Varget (43.0 gr. - 45.1 gr.) Rifle: Savage 110FP .308 (1:10 twist) Brass: Lapua Primer: CCI What do you see? Looks like a good node from 43.0 to 43.6, and a good node from 44.2 to 44.8. Am I correct in concluding that 44.5 (Load #6) would then be my optimal...

    Ladder testing @ 300 yards

The range where we shoot and test new loads used to permit us to shoot at distances to 500 yards. At 500 yards, ladder testing provided enough vertical dispersion to get a pretty good idea of where the best node was. In response to noise complaints by some of the locals, the range recently...

    Sorting cases by weight

Tonight I weighed some recently cleaned and prepped (unprimed) Lapua .308 brass and this is what I got. Of the 25 cases I measured: 5 weighed between 170 and 171 grains 11 weighed between 171 and 172 grains 8 weighed between 172 and 173 grains 1 weighed between 173 and 174 grains...
