Just thought I would share this from my ammunition collection. Talon Mfg. Carlos Hathcock White Feather 308 Win. ammunition. You don't see this around much these days.
OK, here you go - 5,000 yards. So all you mall ninja ELR scoffers can knock this one too now. After load development took him 7 shots to get on a 40" target at 5,000 yards.
The 2016 KO2M NRA match at Whittington had 1st and 2nd shot hits at 2,477 yards (~1.4 miles), and the HRC rifle team has had 4,210 yard shots (~2.4 miles) with Hill Country Rifles with 375 Cheytac rounds, so this is not outside the realm of probability at all.
Just saw this on my Guns America Digest feed. Based on a Russian .40 Lobaev Improved (a modified 408 Cheytac), claims a 4,604 yards (~2.6 mile) shot using an SVLK-14S rifle on a 1 meter target; but not verified as of yet. Still very interesting...
OK, but if BC has nothing to do with accuracy then why all the emphasis on high BC projectiles? It has to have more to it than just compensating for poor wind calls. What gives you the superior accuracy with API vs. standard M33? Just trying to understand here. I will definitely shoot the API...
If you go strictly by BC, then the API and M33 ball should behave very similarly. If anything the M33 should give slightly better performance since it has a BC of 0.67 vs. the API which had a BC of only 0.65. Something else must be going on for you to see that much better performance from the API.
What NV or thermal rifle scopes are out there capable of withstanding a 50 BMG recoil force? I checked on the Thor thermals and they are not; but could be made so but only on a large order basis. I think the FLIR units like the T50 and T70 are 50 BMG rated; but their price is beyond my budget...
Thanks LRShooter101. I will be shooting mainly M33 ball ammo. Jerry Hazlett will be loading up a few A MAX rounds as well to compare with the standard stuff. Since my barrel is only 24" I don't expect sub-MOA; but we'll see.
What match grade 50 BMG ammo will cycle reliably in semi-auto 50 BMG detachable magazines such as in the Barrett M82A1? Looks like PMC X TAC match and Hornady 50 BMG A-MAX both have excellent BCs; but will they fire from a semi-auto?? Thanks.
Anyone on the Hide know where I could find a Meopta ZN 6x NV scope here in the USA? I did not see any in usual search engines except on the Meopta CZ site which is informational not a for sale type site. Thanks, Dale
Thanks for all the good feedback. Yes there is more to the 50 BMG than recoil to be sure. An 18" barrel as noted IMOH as well is too short when it comes to muzzle blast and concussion. The draw of the 50 BMG for me is its pure power and the range of ammo designed for it (AP, API, APIT and even...
What is the lightest magazine fed 50 BMG rifle out there today that still has manageable felt recoil performance? From handling various 50's at SHOT and elsewhere it appears the Safety Harbor SHF 50R weighing in at 17.5 lbs. empty with a 22" barrel is the lightest I have seen to date. Their 18"...
