Is anybody doing it? If so what's your load? What speed are you running and what is the optimum speed for the 155 Scenar?

72.2gr VV160, WLR primer, Norma brass, 3.495 COL 3095fps. Shoots in the .4's @100 and minute of clay bird @565yds out of a TRG-42 1-11 twist.

Interesting- that's actually slow for a 155 with a 27" barrel. You can get the 155's up to 3200 fps easy, and some out to 3250 or more. But- it's accurate!

Carlos,

Look at IMR 4350, or H4350 (for the extreme powder) with the 155's. I've had good luck with IMR 4350 on several 300 WM's with this powder and bullet weight.

DAMN - I can get a 155 SMK or Berger 155.5 over 3k with 46.x grains of Varget in a 308. 25 more grains of powder at a little over 1 fps per grain - now THAT'S efficiency.

I know there are hunters that make a big deal about shooting the 150 grain bullets in the 30 cal magnums saying how that the trajectory is. One guy the other day I was talking to was going on and on about his 300 Tejas, which is a 300 Weatherby improved. He was telling me how he was getting 2975 out of it with a 150 hunting bullet and how great it was.

I flipped open 3 loading books and showed him the same velocities with the same bullet in a standard 300 WM case.

The bottom line is that big case needs more resistance from the bullet in order to approach efficient use of the powder charge. Stick a 190 or 200 in it and let what magic of the 300WM exists do its thing. Shoot the 155s out of a 308 and save your powder and bore on the 300.

Re: 155 Scenars in a 300WM

on another site someone told me they were getting around 3400 fps with a 155 scenar and 80 grains of 7828 out of a 28" barrel. i am not sure what twist he was using. he said he was able to get them to 3690 before he started having major pressure issues.

Re: 155 Scenars in a 300WM

I have easily gotten 3250 without even pushing hard or going to much faster powdes. My barrel is near the end of its life I may have to play with RL19 or varget to see how fast I can get one from a 26"

Re: 155 Scenars in a 300WM

Wow I am a bit surprised at that. I get about 3000 fps with my 308 with a 1:12" twist. In my 300 win mag, I used the 190 SMK and still managed to get easily 3000 fps. It's a 1:10" twist. When my stick is back from GAP I guess I have to give it a try to see.

Re: 155 Scenars in a 300WM

I didn't realize this was "bigger dick" thing, the OP asked for loads with 155's. My load works great for everything I need it to do, plus it's easy on brass and shoulder.

(Going back into my corner now)

Re: 155 Scenars in a 300WM

i have seen 3550 fps w/ 130 gr Barnes TSX in a 24" 300 WM

Have you ever had a bullet come apart? I wonder what speed it would take.

Re: 155 Scenars in a 300WM

I tested the 155 Scenar out of my GAP .300 WM with a 1/10 Rock 5R.
The best accuracy i achived was aprox. 1.25" group at 200m at aprox 3450-3500 fps.
If I had it to do over again I would like to have went with a 1/12 twist.

Re: 155 Scenars in a 300WM

I never had an issue dusting one off. I only played with them a little as I am limited to a 100 yard range now. I stopped due to I was sending 23 grains more powder than a 308 to get 200 to 400 fps. I should cook this barrel out so I can justify converting it to another caliber.
