My 260rem wont group better than 1" with 140 berger vld hunting bullets when i push them over 2650fps does anybody have an idea why? Ive tried RL-19 RL-17 and h4350 as soon as i get to 2600 to 2650 fps its a 1 hole gun with the rl19 and h4350 i would really like to push these faster and still have accuracy. it has a 26" 1 in 8 twist bbl. any thoughts?

Re: 260 speed +accuracy problems

What he said about seating depth. If I could only push a 140 at 2650, I'd be changing something up. Because that is slower than shit.

Re: 260 speed +accuracy problems

I havnt played with depths yet i just loaded them to mag length and i know! My creedmoor hits 2750 with no pressure signs with the same bullet and is scary accurate

Re: 260 speed +accuracy problems

With the help of William Roscoe I have found in multiple 260's that everything has worked within .005 off the lands. I have even had great luck with 140 VLD's running at 2800 fps. You might try the 140 hybrids as they are labeled as not being as seating depth sensitive. I have also found the 139 scenar is very accurate and not sensitive to depth.

Good luck

Re: 260 speed +accuracy problems

Try a little RL 17 or 22 and seating depth can be finicky with the Bergers. Or just play with the seating as you work your current loads up.

Re: 260 speed +accuracy problems

Yeah scenars are scary accurate in this rifle but i need a load i can hunt with, one load that i could hunt and target shoot would be ideal. I live abt 2 hrs south of dfw how do those hybrids work on deer or hogs?

Why not use the scenars?

Re: 260 speed +accuracy problems

you must be in a low node, I can push the 142 SMk to 2850 with 43.5 gr of H4350 without pressure issues. At 40 gr you are just getting started, I use lapua and necked up win brass so i don't know about the hornady but pour more powder in there.
hope this helps.

I know a lot of people that hunt with scenars and have good luck. There's a good review of the hybrids and seating depth on www.tacticalmatches.com

I tried them and found the target vld to not be sensitive in mine.

Re: 260 speed +accuracy problems

I moved from RE-17 & H4350 to H4831SC and threw away the reloading manual. Very fast and the charges are off the chart, yet ZERO signs of pressure. But those VLD's are fickle bullets and can be very tempermental. I haven't tried the latest Berger 6.5's. I have heard some good things about them.

couldn't agree more, the VLD suck at figuring out seating depth, the new hybrid are way easier and not too sensitive.
