Thanks Blue,
I was wondering what the big hype was all about, specially with all the other large 30cal wildcats outhere. good brass availability helps.
Here we go again.... better dig up the 240 smks i have sitting around and rechamber my 338lm.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Sold are 3 of my 338LM and built a 300 norma and have not look back

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Just ordered brass and bullets today from Midway

RWSnyder is just waiting on the barrel and I will be slinging bullets soon.

What dies are you guys using? Heard Hornady was making some, but haven't been able to find any to this point.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Bump for an update from those shooting the 300 Norma; preferably those shooting it successfully at distance. Especially interested at what velocities you settled in on after load development for the Hornday 225, and new Berger 230s. Barrel lengths and twists would be good info too. Thanks!

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Yes, interested in knowing real life velocities and barrel lengths with specific bullets.

Txs.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Picked up rifle today. Should have some real world data with 208 A-MAX in a 28" barrel shortly.

No pressure:) Look forward to where you settle in at for your go to load for shots at distance.

What powder are you going after first? H1000 and Retumbo look real good in Quickload assuming a ideal seating depth for your 208 Amax....

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Have 10 rounds ready with 208's and 87 gr of H-1000 for barrel break in and zero. Also have RETUMBO on hand.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

During barrel break in with a chrono that the battery is going dead or it's about to shoot craps. Velocity is around 3140 fps with a 208 A-MAX and 87 gr of H-1000. I have a friends chrony that will go next outing to get solid numbers. Initial groups around .75 MOA at 100 yards. My bench technique is a little rusty. Will do a ladder test at 400 yards, but will stay around the 87 gr mark. Probably one grain either way in .3 increments.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

I have a 300 Norma Mag that is built on a Defiance receiver, Manner's T5 stock, and a Brux 1-9 twist barrel. I only put 50 rounds through it before getting it sent off for Melonite coating, but it is definitely a shooter.

I shot the 230 grain Berger Hybrid in it. I started at 83.0 grains of Retumbo and ended up settling on 86.0 grains of Retumbo. At my 200 yard zero, it printed a 0.5" three shot group. I shot it at 590, 710, 805, 1005, and 1250 yards and in order to get all of my drops to match up, I used 2950 fps with a 0.368 G7 BC. It shot very well at all ranges. Overall, I am very impressed with both the 300 Norma and the 230 Berger Hybrid. The combination offers big 338 performance in a lesser recoiling 30 cal. alternative.

I will be getting it back from Melonite coating on Monday and will have more input shortly.

Those are pritty good results you are getting out of your 300NM with the 230gr berger hybrid
has anybody tried them on game or are they strickly a tactical bullet???

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Got the barrel broken in this weekend. 55 rounds down the 9-twist Pac-Nor. I didn't go high enough on the ladder test. At 88.3 gr ended up at 3037 fps. Loaded up 3 rounds each with 88.8 and 89.3 gr of H-1000 with 208's and one set of 3 with 86.3 gr of H-1000 and Hornady 225 gr BTHP. The 88.8 gr load did 3080 fps,E/S 14 with 1.5" elevation at 300 yards. The 89.3 gave 3107 fps, 29 E/S with 1" elevation also with very, very slight extractor mark. The 225 gr load did 2980 fps E/S was 47 , but that gives a base line and it still shot under MOA at 300.

I think I will next play with seating depth with the 88.8 load with where it is now and .005 on either side of it, with 5 rounds each.

Conditions today weren't the best 85 with a 3-12 MPH head wind fish tailing from 10 o'clock to 1 o'clock, boiling mirage made the target bounce nicely.

Will be getting some Ramshot magnum to try with the 225's.

Hey!

Getting ready to build a .300 Norma mag myself reamer is on the way. It will shoot and barrel life should be close to the Hulk at about 2000-3000 rounds of pin point accuracy. This cartridge will shoot out to one-mile no problem with 208's and or 240's.
Retumbo or H-1000 will do the trick with about 82-85 grs. with 240's and 88- 90 grns. with 208's - 210's. Velocitys will be around 3100-3200 with 208-210 and 2900 plus with 240's.
Barrel life is greatly misunderstood with most rifles. 1000 yard BR proves it a bunch.

Hope to see you and your daughter again soon!

Tom </div></div> Tom what did you mean here when you said "barrel life is greatly misunderstood " ? You firmly believe you can get 2-3k rounds of pin point accuracy in this calibre with those 3k plus speeds ? this looks great with berger G7 BC for the Berger .30 cal 230 grain Tactical bullet is 0.368.

G1 BC for the same is 0.719 - this is the same BC as the 300 gr Lapua Scenar which has a .363 g7bc .
Why would one use a heavier calibre bullet in LM or the Norma magnum when you can use the same BC bullet but in a 30 cal lighter weight projo with more steam and less kick in the 30-338 norma case?? Barrel throat errosion looks like the only negative to me--i want one now

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Went back out today and shot the 88.8 gr load at 400 yards. With new brass the E/S was 14 for 4 shots, average 3094 fps. Put one shot on steel and 3 on paper. The 3 shot group was 1.75".

Shot the same load in 1X fired brass, E/S was 8 with the first 3 shots being 3100 fps. 3 shot 400 yard group was 2.25".

Load isn't showing any pressure.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

I have finished up my 300 Norma Magnum improved. I bumped the shoulder back, changed the shoulder angle to 40 degrees and shortened the overall case length to 2.450". Photo shows it with 230 Berger Hybrid.

Flikr Photos

I will be shooting this in F-Open with a Robertson GBF Stock, Bat M action, 32 inch 10 twist LW Barrel topped with an S&B PM II 12-50x scope. Rifle weighs 21 pounds 14 ounces.

Will be out doing load development the week of December 19th.

Thats one very long neck you have on your new 300 Skadi????

How long is it???

What velocity are you hoping for with the 230gr out of your 32 inch barrel?

.4634" Long Neck to support a 1.640" long bullet (230 Berger)

I have run the cartridge in QL and velocities projections go over 3100 fps, but I am looking for an accuracy node around 2925-2950 fps which will give me just under 5 moa of wind drift (10 mph 90 degree) at 1000 yards. It takes the 7mm 180 VLD 3100 fps to achieve that. As those who shoot the 7mm 180, 3100 fps has a barrel life of only about 500 rounds.

While I could run faster, its all about getting the accuracy and having barrel life with the right powder. Not to mention, this will have no muzzle brake.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Try some H872 start at 85gn and work up.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Went out today to verify velocity in lower temps.

On 8-29-11 with 1X fired brass 4 shots ranged from 3100-3108 fps with 3 of the 4 being 3100 fps. Did not write temmp down but probably 75-80 degrees.

Went out today and shot 3 over the chrono and it went from 3100 to 3115 fps with 2 of the 3 being 3100 fps. The 3 shot group at 400 yards was 1.65" as good as i could measure on steel.
Shot a 3 shot group about 10 days ago at 575 yards, horizontally the group sucked at 5" but the vertical was right at 1".

I think I will stick with this 208 A-MAX load and see how it does at longer range. If it drys up or freezes up I think I have a place to stretch it out to 1200 yards.

Will update when I shoot longer.

Berger 230gr Hybrid Target G1 .743 G7 .380
H1000 85.5 gr
Retumbo 87gr
89 degrees
70% Humidity
Alt. 100ft

Accuracy was under a 1/2 MOA with both loads, these were run to est. the high end on pressure I have not chronographed them yet
Loads were run up until pressure then backed up to what is posted I would start under both charge weights and work up to them.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

The 300 Norma was shot in the Ft Benning Intl Comp in 2010 with 210 Bergers with Retumbo muzzle velocity of 3200 it won the Open class and Destroyed everyone on the UKD shoot with 10 out of 11 first round hits. It is very forgiving.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

What velocity with the 230gr.
I need one of these.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

In my 300 Norma Magnum Improved (300 SKADI), I have been using N165 and H1000 with the Berger 215 Hybrid.

My average velocity on 10 shot strings with Berger 215 is running 3100-3105 fps with an ES of 15 and SD of 5 on multiple test strings. Accuracy for 10 shots has been running 1 inch groups at 300 yards. Will be using this at a 1000 yard match on January 7.

On the 230 Berger, I have done some loads with H1000 and found a load at 2950 fps that I am working on.

Does anyone know if these 300 Norma AI barrels are UK or US sourced? Haven't been able to see them listed as an offering on any AI related site. If they are actually available, I'd love to do one on an AIAX 338 action/platform. We have little chance of being able to license 338s down here in Australia - but 300s are generally ok.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Hi, I'm shooting the .300Norma - I had my .338Lapua (same boltface) rebarreled due to the petit restrictions placed on civilian use of the (all .338) cartridge on MOD ranges in the UK. My McMillan MCRT now with the new 30" Dan Lilja Heavy Varmint contour 1-10" + Vais brake and Berger 230gr MoS2 Hybrid T's ahead of 80.7g H1000 & Fed 215M's, Norma brass, COAL 3.526" (just on lands)(my short throat reamer request to Dave K. from PTG) produced 0.55 moa @ 1000yds straight out of the trap. I will be trying the 215's as well next year - just got 1000 over - so good to go.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Steve, what velocities are you getting with the 230 bullets?

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Hi Gyr, with the MoS2 coated 230’s I’m getting 2922 fps – these bullets are 0.004” into the lands and this is approaching a maximum load in my rifle. Also bear in mind here in soggy lowland South East England the altitude is about 330 ft above sea level and humidity is usually between 65 – 85% all year round, often much more and typical temps at this time of year are less than 10C (50F). This load closely matches the trajectory of the 6XC (my other rifle) with the 115 out to 350yds as on my two long range rifles I use the Tubb DTAC sight reticle so if I ever take this rifle into the field I can confidently take a shot at game or vermin by using the reticle only within this range. The MoS2 215’s in the lands at 2977 fps match the calibration of the sight even better so I’ll probably work more with these – they’ll be close to the XC out to 450yds. Also this load could be pushed faster and still be safe in my rifle. I shoot both of the rifles out to 1200yds – the longest range at the Bisley camp with very good results.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

rifling twist should be 235 mm (1 in 9.25in).308 Norma Mags and .30-.338 Win. Mags (same thing, different headstamp) got about 1200 rounds of 3/4 MOA at 1000 yards as a long range prone match rifle burning 65 or so grains of powder pushing 200 grain pills out somewhat over 2900 fps. And both were king of that hill for several years. The .300 Win. Mag playing the same game got about 1000 rounds shooting the same bullets out at about 3000 fps with about 69 grains of powder. I found one site online listing the .300 Norma Mag using almost 90 grains of powder under a 200 grain bullet. And that's why my prediction's at 700 absolute maximim with a bit of luck to hold 3/4 MOA at 1000 yards.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

With 1000 yard matches that's 22 rounds in 20 minutes, unless unlimited sighters which is more rounds per string. When I still shot 1K matches most guys were finished in 8-12 minutes. My 300 Norma was not built with 1K matches in mind. Instesd it was built for banging long range steel with average round count between 5-10 rounds till rifle is put aside to cool. I'm pushing 208's at 3100 fps with 89 gr of powder. Barrel is also cleaned every 20-25 rounds. I am guessing (and hoping) that I will see 1500 rounds with this barrel. If not it is a consumable.
