Does anyone have experience with the 300 NORMA MAG? Would like to know the ballistics capabilities of the 208 A-MAX and 240 SMK. Also, what barrel length is optimal for a full propellant burn?

Thanks

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

260shooter,

No recent experience with the 308 Norma Mag, as I last owned one 20 + years ago. But brass for the 308 Norma has always been problematical. Unless using original Norma brass, you have to generally use a case forming die. You could use 338 Win mag brass, without a die, but they do come out a might short. When using 300 Win Mag brass to from 308 Norma, you do need a special (about $50.) case forming die, to do it right.

Easier to form, load and shoot, is the 30-338. You use the same load data, as the 308 norma mag, but case forming from the original 338 win was one pass through a regular 30-338 FL Die.

In my 30-338 and 308 Norma I used the same load with a 200 bullets: 72 Grains H-4831, Federal 215 Primer, WW brass.

The 308 Norma, and 30-338 have the same capabilities as the 300 Win Mag. but use slightly less powder. Both cases are a bit easier to reload than the 300 Win mag, as I always found the 300 Win Mag neck a bit short. But in reality there is not much difference in the 30-338, 308 Norma and 300 Win Mag performance wise.

Good brass is easier to come by in the 30-338 and 300 win mag. Unless you have an existing 308 Norma mag, I really cannot see any sound reason to build one, unless just wanting something different.

Barrel length wise my 30-338 had a 22" barrel, and my 308 Norma Mag had a 24" Barrel. No crono back in the Mid 80"s so I have no idea of their velocities. The 22" 30-338 shot well though.

Best of luck,

Bob

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Bob

Thanks for the input, but I'm interested in the .338 Norma Mag necked down to .30 cal.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

260 shooter,

My apologies. I missed that part, 300 Norma vs 308 Norma. Quite stupid of me in fact. I had forgotten about the newish 338 Norma Mag. I'll go back to my old guy nap now.

Thanks for pointing it out so politely.

Bob

Not quite, but 30-338 Lapua was tested here years ago already.
Great cal but barrels are gone between 1000 and 1500 shots.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

260shooter,
I have switch to H1000, using 89gr with the 210 Berger's.
Velocity is running in the 3140fps range. Could push it harder, but don't feel the need. Accuracy is excellent where I am at, and I have brass with 10 reloads, showing no primer pocket expansion. I have not done any load developement with 240 SMK, as at present I don't see any gain to be had going to them. Some quick calculations show there is no significant gain in trajectory using the 240gr SMK. My rifle is called a 300 JAZZ. It is a 338 Norma Mag necked down to 30cal, with a 30 degree improved shoulder. My barrel length is 28", 1.30 @ breech, #5 contour. My COAL with the 210 Berger's w/BT seated at the neck/shoulder junction is less than 3.50 and easily fits in a standard magwell or DM box system. I would think a 26" barrel would also be fine, as that is what alot of 338 Norma Mag are built on. The 300 Norma should be a great cartridge as well.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

I only have 120 rds down the tube doing load developement and trajectory validation, so I can't tell you about barrel life. It is an over bore situation, but not that extreme. I would guess that 0.50 MOA accuracy would go to about 1,000-1200 rounds with a little bit of chasing the lands thrown in for fun.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

260 shooter,

Hey!

Getting ready to build a .300 Norma mag myself reamer is on the way. It will shoot and barrel life should be close to the Hulk at about 2000-3000 rounds of pin point accuracy. This cartridge will shoot out to one-mile no problem with 208's and or 240's.
Retumbo or H-1000 will do the trick with about 82-85 grs. with 240's and 88- 90 grns. with 208's - 210's. Velocitys will be around 3100-3200 with 208-210 and 2900 plus with 240's.
Barrel life is greatly misunderstood with most rifles. 1000 yard BR proves it a bunch.

Hope to see you and your daughter again soon!

Tom

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Tom

Thanks for the input. Other than better brass and case length, is the 300 Norma that much better than the 300 RUM?

Would love to get back over to your place but days off have just changed. So it will probably be next spring before we get back.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

I can't see how if it is. but I have the same question because thats the 2 30s I am looking at (300 rum or 308 norma).

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

I do not have a 300 Norma, but my 300 JAZZ is based on the same parent case, just more case capacity than the 300 Norma. The differences that I see between the 300 Norma and the 300 RUM is that the 300 Norma does it with less powder, and allows you to seat the base of the bullets at the neck shoulder junction and still use a standard magbox length of 3.60. I shoot 210gr Berger's and my COAL is 3.500. This allows the use of the standard magwell and not have to go with a Wyatt magbox, which I have had to do in the past. With the 300 RUM and Berger bullets, you have to seat the bullet deeper in the case to get it to fit in the standard magbox, thereby using up case capacity. For some this is not an issue. I like the BT of my bullets seated slightly above the neck/shoulder junction. The 300 Norma should be a very efficient cartridge.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Brass for the 300 Norma should start to surface in Sept !!!

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Square me away if I’m wrong... but I owned a .308 norm mag... Is that what you guys are calling a 300 Norma Mag...?
Or is the 300 Norma Mag specifically a 338 Norma necked down to the .308?

I have some of the .308 NM Brass if someone wants it... has 3 uses
.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

NOrma had the 308 norma magnum and I think a 358 nrma mag. back in the past.

As they were releasing the 338 norma mag, they have thought about the 300 and 375 norma mag. ( beltless) whihc I guess come from necking down and up the 338.

Blaser is now also looking at these cartridges as they are releasing the 7 blaser mag, 300 blasert mag, 338 blaser mag and 375 blaser mag.. so I guess we will see a lot of these in the future.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

.300 Norma mag is the .338 Norma necked down to .300. same (14,93mm) head size. Slightly more case taper but uses exactly the same headspace guages as the .338 Norma.

Bullet of choice...240grn Sierra MK.

Once I have some loads, I'll post them. Dafe Kiff makes the reamers.

Cases can be formed from .338 Norma brass (available from Black Hills). - .338 Norma cases are made with ½ deg taper sepcified for the .300 chamber so no problems there. The .338 Chamber has marginally less taper, but the cases are slighly undersized.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

So basically if you have .338 Norma brass neck it down and you have .300 Norma ?

If one was thinking of building a hunting rifle and was considering .300 winnie but was also having a .338 Norma built in a heavy platform then this really might be an option ?

Will it perfrom from a 26" barrel ? How much more over a .300 winnie using the 210 berger would one expect with a 26" tube ?

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

PC3 If you are looking at a hunting round, you would do better to go with the .300 Blaser magnum. Factory ammo available from both Norma and Blaser, good case life, fits in some actions better etc, mag holds more etc.

The .300 Norma is designed to give best accuracy with 215 -240grn bullets and the throat design reflects this. I would venture that for hunting you will be wanting top accuracy with 180-200grn bullets.

.300 blaser is based on .404 case as oposed to .416 rigby of the Norma. ie only 8 thou fatter than .300 Win is across the belt. But being beltless it holds 12% more powder. In the Blaser rifles we are tipically seeing ½ moa with 180grn Noslers.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Here is a pic of my LR hunting rig .300 JAZZ (30-338 Norma w/ 30 degree shoulder).
Shooting 210 Berger's at 3140fps in a 28" barrel.
Adam, necking down a 338 to 308 is not that overbore, and does not dictate that it will be a barrel burner.
As stated before, I think the 300 Norma is going to be a great caliber, based on the performance I am seeing in my 300 JAZZ.
However, I thought the shoulder on the 300 Norma was bumped back alittle from the 338 Norma. At present I do not see an advantage to go with the 240gr SMK over the 210 Berger's that I am shooting now. Ran ballistics on both to 1000yds, and the 210 Berger's only give up approximately 100ft.lb of energy, and wind between the 2 are almost identicle. This is the first time I have used Norma brass, and find the quality very high in their 338 Norma brass. I have some cases that have 10 reloads on them and no signs of primer pocket expansion. These cases were used for load developement and checking pressure, so they were pushed pretty hard.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Ganyana, despite the fact I will have 300 or so .338 Norma Cases on the way its a pain in the ass to get this stuff in Australia so the Blaser .300 will be harder I reckon. My brain is saying stick with .300 winnie my heart is saying .300 norma (but I have a few rifles that use exotic brass and sometimes that can get tiresome if you know what I mean) I plan to shoot 210 bergers, I have my scope 3.5-15x50 NXS Mildot and mil turrets ready to go just need to work out what platform and when.....

I will follow this thread with interest all the same. Isnt the whole theory of the .338 Norma case the fact that it fits fine in standard mags and therefore you can seat your pills out etc. ? Isee it as being a halfway in power between .300 winnie and .300 RUM. I like the non belted case and one could drive it at top .300 win speeds with really low pressure.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Is .300 Norma stamped brass already available ?

How does one get competition dies etc. for either .300 Norma or .300 Blaser this round I have never heard of before

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

pc3,
I don't think the 300 Norma gives up anything to the 300 RUM.I would estimate that they will be very similar in velocity, but the 300 Norma will get it done with slightly less powder and seat VLD bullets in a standard magbox of 3.60 As far as dies, I had to go custom, but if you are patient, I am sure that Forester or Redding will be coming out with them. My 338 Norma dies I got from Forester.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

BlueJazz - Jimmie Sloans original design of the .300 Norma was indeed slightly shorter. This has since been changed to alow the use of a single set of headspace guages for both .338 and .300 versions and give a perfect fit in a Single AI mag (so they don't have to have different mags).

pc3- Correctly headstamed Norma brass for the 300 will only be available to the public by the end of the year. All the current run is going to a couple of rifle makers. The Norma agent in Aussie is Parabellum Imports & Wholesales. (0)3 93 29 48 80. He can order .338 Norma brass, factory loaded .300 blaser or .300 blaser brass

As a target cartridge, the .300 Norma is the best available in .30 cal, but it is a pain to fit into many standard bolt actions as the case head is .584" (14.84mm) and you need a custom bolt for the remington 700. For a hunting rig, the .300 Blaser fits a regular magnum bolt face with perhaps a tiny bit of clean up, fits the same magazine box as the .300 win, but is a better design of both cartridge and chamber so you get a good 10%+ increase in performance over the 300 win. Cases for the .300 Blaser can be made from Bertram .404 brass if needs be.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

ganyana,
Thanks for the update on the 300 Norma headspace.
As far as being a pain to do a 300 Norma on a Remington .700 bolt standard action, the rifle I have is built on a .700 bolt and was no trouble to build. Remington and Savage are just a couple of makers that are coming out with 338 Norma rifles on standard actions from what I understand, there will be others as well.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Reviving this thread.

Now that 300 Norma Mag brass is available does anyone know where to get reloading dies for this caliber? Checking all the usual sources but to no avail.

Mr Sloan,
Is the 300 Norma being made in a factory rifle yet ?
Also what velocities are you getting with those loads?
Is the shoulder angle the same as your 338 Norma design?
Thanks

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

BLUEJAZZ

Received a few pieces today. Shoulder angle appears to be 20 degrees.

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

Re: 300 NORMA MAG ?

For any of you guys who want a barrel and have an AI 338 Lap Mag call AINA and ask for a 300 Norma barrel. I have the reamer here ready to go to work. Good round BTW.
