Basic rifle info. Badger m2008 action
Classic barrel works 27 inch barrel 1-10 twist, fat bastard break
Aics 2.0 folder chassis system,
Cip mag length

Load. Berger 300 gr otm tactical over lapua brass.
Powder h1000 at 85 grains 2635 avg fps 2.5 inch groups at 300 yards
Coal 3.775

Lapua 250 grain scenars
Powder h1000 at 90 grains, 2800 fps 1.6 inch groups
Coal 3.650

Same bullets as above with retumbo produced double the group size and was very very dirty. I know this powder is know to be very temp stable, but I could not find a charge that produced consistst group sizes under an Mao at 300 yards. I was kinda let down. I used up most of a pound (which isn't hard using 90 grns at a time) searching for the magic load. Must just be me. Ive seen others with amazing groups using this powder. I can't make it work for me.

I'm pleased with the h1000 it's clean and is consitanly producing sub 3/4 moa groups for me at this time. Now on to longer ranges. More load data posted soon.

I run this exact load out of a 25" barrel at CIP Mag length and get 2,580fps. Very consistent. Enjoy!

My Savage loves Retumbo and the 300 Bergers. I run 92 grains at 3.69 OAL. They are running 2740 out of the Savage 26" barrel and are 1/3 MOA to 1000. They shoot really well all the way out to 1800. When this 8lb jug runs out, I may try a pound of H1000 to see how it works.

I run 92gr of Retumbo out of 30" barrel with 300gr Berger at 2860fps. Shot this load out to 2449yds with great accuracy. Tried H-1000 but couldn`t get the velocity or accuracy. I work up loads until my rifles shoot .600-.700 consistently at 300yds. I run my virgin brass over a K&M expander mandrel. Seat bullets with LE Wilson seater. My cases run about 10 in lbs of seating pressure. OAL of 3.9".

I've never tried Retumbo, but my load is 91gr of H1000 out of a 29" barrel, 9.4 twist with lapua scenars and lapua brass loaded at OAL of ~3.741. Can't remember the exact measurement to the Ogive as I don't have my book in front of me. Produce 1/3 MOA. Don't know the velocity as I have never had the chance to chrono it.

natesguns, Mao is very difficult to achieve with Retumbo alone. Did you try adding rice?

I will look into the expander and neck tension issue. Thanks for the info

3.9 oal? That's obviously not mag length, but it's also about .040 jammed for me on a brand new tacmatch reamed bartlein. So I'm curious, is this an older, more worn barrel or did you have your throat custom reamed?
I am loading mag length for the break in rounds and 90 grains as my max load (starting out at 86.5), but i think i will be mostly single feeding for this rifle. 3.86 will give me a .015 jump...

I don`t run mags. The case neck is full of bullet, boattail in shoulder only. I can`t see running a mag box on my 338. I only shoot my 338 at 1 mile and beyond. One barrel is a 10 twist Schneider with less than 300rds through it and the other is a 9.5 twist Bartlein thats new. PTG makes reamers to my specs. These are target rifles only.

Anyone here ever heard of BASE-TO-OGIVE ?

Yep, made the 5 miles run from the base to the ogive bar many times, cool place and cute waitresses. Probably still have a tab there, Mao used to go there too; how do you know that place?
Base to ogive, only way to go ;)

Just to add I was simply comparing the two powders. All other variables were as close to the same as I possibly could achieve.

Base to ogive. Nope, no one that reloads for long distances has ever heard of this.

On a more serious note, wish I could find H1000, it's been MIA for a while. A friend of mine recently gave me one lbs of H1000, so once I will have a good load established with another powder, I will also run test vs H1000.
Good shooting

Best results with Retumbo and 300gr Bergers has been from 90.5 to 91.5 in several CIP-chambered rifles. 2710-2730 mv from 24.5" barrels. 5" of vertical at 1000y.

YMMV seems to apply here, but a helpful thread, as I'm soon looking at testing H1000 vs. Retumbo.

Just a follow up. Took these 3 shots today at 1100 yards. Bumped up to 86 grains of h1000. Around 2740 mv (not verified by crono yet) Seams to be doing what I want. I can't expect the rifle or bullet to do better. Now if I can just read that damn wind better I'd be doing something.

9 mills up elevation.

That'll work! Pretty impressed to see 2740 out of your barrel. I'm currently running 90 grains retumbo in my 29" barrel and only getting around 2690. Basically, that's zero advantage over my 260 at 1k(it's launching 140 amax at 2890 - same TOF and wind drift). But it shoots them so well that I'm in no hurry to push them any faster. I did try 91gr retumbo and got 2800 but bolt lift was horrid! Might have to give h1000 a try. That or RL33 - my buddy is getting almost 2900 with 99gr and no pressure.

Yeah don't hold me to the 2740. It's got to be close but I haven't had the chance to run it over a crono. I'm in the process of getting another one. Mine had an unfortunate death at the local range.

To do it again I'd get that sonic chrono. The magneto speed is nice and accurate but you have to work up loads with a ladder test or whatever, then see if the load groups well, then chrony it, cuz the magneto speed reeks havoc on bullet trajectory.
Heck, anymore, i think I'll just use my shooter ballistics velocity calculator, cuz what magneto was telling me didn't match the ballistics tables anyway. Plugging in 2700 called for 7.4mils to 1k but i actually needed 7.6.

Well back to 100 yards today. Went from 86 grains to 89 grains of H-1000 and my groups at 100 yards were very good. Had some cratering on the primers but no bolt lift issues. I had some Retumbo left so loaded 5 rounds with 89.5 grains and they all shot well. 5 shots all touching an easy 3/4 moa at 100 yards, may try again at distance with what's left of the Retumbo.

Load was 300 grain berger otms seated .025 off lands
lapua brass on it's 4th reload
89 grains of h-1000
Avg group .600
showed signs of pressure
80 deg oat

Same as above with Retumbo
89.5 grains
avg group .700
5 shots
no pressure signs. Only noticeable change was all shots were to the right .3 mills compared to using h-1000. Every

I have a 98B with the 27" barrel. This gun is uncommonly accurate. Magazine length that I am working with is 3.765" My gun likes 89.0/H4831sc with the 250 gr. Sierras @2950 f/s. s.d. 8 and with the 300 Sierras it likes 92.0/H1000 @2784 f/s also with a s.d. of 8. I see others using the same 300 gr. load on some of the U-tube video's that have been on the net. I quit using Retumbo as it seemed too dirty.
Just my experiences. HTH

Using Vhit N570, at 92.4 grains I was getting 2824 fps using a .300grn scenar out of a TRG-42. Chronoed on a CED M2.
