Ok , back to the drawing board . I shot out to 1000 yds with some 168 Hornady BTHP Match bullets with 71 & 73 gr IMR7828 . 73 gr did much better at that distance . 71 gr makes TIGHT groups at 100 but falls apart out there

. Im gonna go up to 190 & 200 grn bullets . Any sudgestions on powder ? I was seating to length and using CCI MAG primers . No bechrest primers available . I'm a novice at this but the addiction has begun . Keep in mind we had one hell of a cross wind , speed unkown but it took the bullet aprox 24" to the left !

Re: 5R 300 win mag

i have a semi custom 300 win savage with bull broughton barrle. I started out with blistic tips and all other types. Shot alot and differnt powders. 1St.. NEVER do load development closer than 200yrds. Trust me it tells you more the frather you are. I waisted alot of ammo at 100. 200 or even 300 is better. As for shooting distance look at 190 smk and 220 smk. I have shot alot thru mine but the 220 smk and H1000 really does well for me. Best group was 3/4" 3 shots at 500! but I never could repeat!! But that is the load I stayed with. 2nd read and learn how to do a powder ladder test can save you the most time and money of ALL! You will need a rest of some type, shooting off hand or sloppy in load developement is just waisting your time!! As for wind in working up a load it doesnt' matter much as long as it the same for your group. You just want to see how the load groups. After you get one working then you make drop chart and wind chart then the fun begins.

Re: 5R 300 win mag

Try using cci br2 primers. You might have a lot better luck with the heavier bullets than the lighters, a lot of people seem to be using 208s and 210s. I had a 300wsm that would shoot the hell out of 185vlds. You can google optimal charge weight, its another good test.

Re: 5R 300 win mag

get some 210gn or 208gn bullets along with some H1000 gun powder.then load 76gn of H1000 putting one of the bullets of choice just into the lands.then go and sight in at 300.then go and shoot at 500 to see what happens.trust me this bullet choice and powder will work great out of a 300wm 5r milspec.I know because I own one and I just got through shooting mine at 500 getting a 10 shot 1.5 in group.

again both bullets will shoot in the same place of impact.so go and get you some of both or one.you want be upset at all.

Re: 5R 300 win mag

i like the 220 SMK & H1000 in my r5 .300 Win Mag,. thats with Winchester brass, Fed 215M primers, & the ogive seated ten off the lands.

it makes 1000 easy and does not mind the wind that much.

SEPA huh? not to far off from my neck of the woods,.. where ya at?

its varried a little by the lots but usually between 74.0 and 75.6,.. im going to be picking up another jug of powder(read completely diffrent lot) soon so i'll have to fine tune it again. i usually get get between 2740 - 2770 depending on charge & conditions when i shoot.

the last batch i put together was getting me 3/4 MOA @ 2760FPS with a 74.8 grain charge. according to BulletFlight thats good enough to get me out to 1300 before i start worring about going sub sonic. (max i can shoot is 1026yds)

i would recomend starting at 73.5 and working up, the Siera manual i have list 75.5 as max @ 2750FPS

hope it helps.
