6.5 Creedmoor

RL16 is more temp insensitive then H4350. I prefer it over H4350 or just about any powder for the 6.5CM. Plus you get a speed boost with it over H4350. 100+ FPS is not uncommon when comparing the 2 loads at full boogie loads.
I use a lot of rl16 and h4350 with 6.5 cm. The velocity thing is definitely true, however, I also find rl16 to be less temperature sensitive. However, both are great in this department.

H4350 is definitely cleaner than rl16. I get similar accuracy with both using 140s.

You’re right, I was thinking RL17. Most reloader powders are unobtanium around me so I haven’t tried any of them except some RL22 I found to try in 300wm.

My current barrel has been nothing but H4350 and 140gr ELDMs. Barrel slowed down a bit from 2800 to about 2750. The other week I did a quick work up on RL16 was hitting around 2845 FPS and not even pushing it that hard. I'm almost positive you can fill it up to the top, slam a 140gr bullet in there and not get pressure with RL16. I'm trying to use up my H4350 then I might dig into my RL16 stockpile. It doesn't come around often and now it's crazy expensive.

I just opened my last 8 lb container of rl16 today. Like you, I was getting close to 2,850 in a 24" AI without reaching book max.

I use Berger 140 grain hybrids and Lapua brass, I've had the best results between 2,770 and 2,800. Going to finish tweaking this load tomorrow, this new lot is a little bit faster than the old lot.

I would argue that having used H4350 a lot in a long different temps. H4350 is the standard for temp stability so there will be no huge gain, if any, going to RL16.

Searching around test data shows the numbers per degree to be lower with H4350 but RL16 is also low so either will work but I would not call RL16 more temp sensitive.

Just curious if your powder charge of 34.2gr is a typo... the start load in Hornady's #11 is 37.3gr, and 38gr on the Hodgdon web site for the 147gr ELD-M.
not a typo, I got the data from Hornady online app. They said max is 43.8, I kept going up till I had Pressure signs, I was able to get it as far as 44.5 before the groups blew out and the bolt handle got real tight. I have found that the Berger 140 VLD does better groups and I can get 2900fps + with the same charge.

So, been loading for a while now but new to 6.5 Creedmoor. This is the first cartridge that i've bought dies with a bushing for neck sizing. Brass is brand new Lapua large primer. Unfired out of the box the neck O.D. measures .2900" to .2895" across 10 samples. I don't have gauges but the neck wall measures .014 so .0140x2=.028. neck O.D. of .2895" minus wall thickness x 2 (.0280) equals .2615. projectile diameter of .264 minus neck I.D. of .2615" looks like neck tension of .0025". I'm guessing the neck die bushings to buy first would be .290" and .289" Hornady dies look about $36 each so trying to buy what I need. Thanks

Seat a bullet and measure the OD of the neck and subtract .002” and go with that.

Thanks for the info. I was just thinking that you might have intended to type 44.2gr rather than 34.2gr. 2900+ fps is excellent!

I'm using the 140gr ELD-M in my 22" barrel, and managed a 5 shot average of 2738 fps with 44gr of StaBALL 6.5. I had no pressure signs at 44gr, which is max on the Hodgdon site. I haven't tried a higher charge. I'm using Starline brass and CCI 200 LRP.

Forgot to mention I'm seating to 2.83" COAL.

Actually, I just looked up some posted benchrest records across a few easily researched links.

Looks like the current 300 international benchrest record for (10) shots at 300 yards is .669 in HB class. That's 1.5x the size of the (20) shot group a few posts ago!

So @Ex E6 brotha...you might want to be investing in attending some various matches with your Aero build. Chances are you can not only be the next record holder, but also get paid for it. Or maybe you could post some videos and teach the rest of us your secrets. Ain't nobody else here can throw 20 rounds into a .139 MOA group!
Apparently there is no response from the world record holder on this matter?

He called me a pig farmer when I pointed out his feats again in another thread.

If you read on for another page's worth from where you found my post, you'll see he digs it deeper.

Integrity is one of those very few intangible traits you can't have taken from you, but you can freely give it away and never get it back.

I don't want to sidetrack this thread, but you also can't allow BS to go unchallenged. People come here to legitimately learn... I'm one of them.

Oh, I’m definitely on your side of things. The dude is a crackpot, obviously. Or, as he might put it, that is what it seems to Me.

I bought a box of Sierra match kings in 142g (I'm used to SMK .308 in 175g, man theyre long!) and seated one. It went up to .2925" but the bullet was super hard to seat so I think I'm gonna start with .291 for .0015" neck tension. Thanks for the help.
there will likely be some spring back after sizing, FYI. I just switched over to Lapua brass, mine was like .003-.0035 neck tension as virgin brass and was seating hard and when I pulled it there was pretty decent scraping down the bullet. I ran a .2625 mandrel on them all and put me at .002” neck tension.

New brass will be harder to seat as there is no fouling in the neck to act as a little lube. I have never seen spring back with my brass but if buying bushings you should probably get a .291 and a .290 as you will probably find a need for both depending on the brass lots and makes.
