I was at the local gun show last weekend and bought 4 boxes of .308 FGMM 175gr ammo...or so i thought. the first box in the stack was .308 but the other three boxes were 7.62x51. I didn't realize until after i had shot a box of the NATO rounds. My understanding is that the 7.62x51 won't hurt a rifle chambered in .308, correct? But, am i going to notice a significant amount of difference in accuracy between the FGMM in 7.62x51 and .308?

Re: 7.62x51 vs. .308 in Rem 700

problems may occur when firing .308win in 7.62x51 NATO chambers as chamber pressure is rated higher for the .308 (amongst several other things)

Re: 7.62x51 vs. .308 in Rem 700

I shot some 7.62x51 and .308 fgmm 175gr smk back to back and I noticed a little bit of a wider spread with the 7.62x51 in my 700 AAC-SD.

The 7.62 shoots about 75 fps faster outta my GAP M40A5 (as compared to tje 308) You should be fine shooting it.

Re: 7.62x51 vs. .308 in Rem 700

OP, don't worry about 7.62x51 in your .308 chamber. No problems there. In my earlier post, I was referencing the .308's 12,000psi increase in max pressure (I'm not an expert but if there is the possibility of a gun blowing up in my face, I'd try to avoid it).

Re: 7.62x51 vs. .308 in Rem 700

I contacted Federal and was advised the only differences with the 7.62x51, as compared with the 308, was the case is "mil spec", the case is also dull and not shiny, and the primer is staked in place. Otherwise, no difference.

Re: 7.62x51 vs. .308 in Rem 700

Many times the internal volume of 7.62 brass is slightly less than that of .308. The case is thicker walled and thereby eats some volume.

That being said, in any modern rifle, the two can be considered interchangeable, or at least that has been my findings and the responses I have gotten from talking to Firearm Manufacturers.

the only dif i ever noticed between the two is accuracy and POI.
other than that they are the same.
