I'm looking to build a 7mm LR elk rifle to shoot 170-180 grain bullets, Id like to send them around 2950-3000 in a suppressed 22-24" barrel throated out in a LA.
I found a good deal on a bunch of Hornady 7 wsm brass, and I like the case capacity over the saum.

My thought is that the wsm would have enough volume to use H1000 and achieve velocities that'd probably require RL26 and higher pressure with a 7 saum

Anyone have experience with shooting the wsm? Is it harder to tune than the saum?
I've owned a 7-300 wsm years ago and it was the most accurate rifle I've shot, just hated dicking around with forming brass..

In a long action you should be fine with H1000.
At approximately 3” OAL I was able to get 2950 easy with H1000 and 7977 with my 7 saum and a 28” barrel.
I think I found pressure at 2990ish.
The extra few grains capacity certainly should allow 2950ish with your shorter barrel.

I have a 7 wsm hunting rifle and an ELRish rig that I shoot Both are short action. I push Berger 180s with RL 26. Load dev was pretty idiot proof as I just loaded to mag length and used RL 26 charges. The hunting gun runs at 3050 and the other tube at 30” goes 3100 easy. I am a huge fan of the round and bought a crap load of the brass when it was available last year. I need to buy a reamer.

I’ve got a 7mm WSM on a short action it shoots 168 and 180 Berger HVLDs equally as good. Load development was a breeze as it will shoot pretty much anything. I run 65 grains of H1000 to get just above 2,900 fps with the 180s. I also developed a retumbo load that will push the 180s well above 3,000 fps.

Interesting the difference in case capacity and powder loads compared with the 7 ss. I ran 2970 with less than 62 grains of H1000 in my 7SS but Retumbo was compressed and couldn't get over 2900 cause I ran out of capacity. Looks like the 7wsm likes rl26 and slower powders than the 7ss.

Wonder if the 7wsm isn't better with the heavier bullets being able to run slower powders.

Right on good to hear that guy's are finding it easy to tune.
What are your barrel specs?
I can guarantee that anyone running equivalent velocities from a saum is doing so at higher pressure

In a short action 7 saum r26 is amazing with 60 ish grains getting you 2950 with a fairly mild load.
I’m easily pushing 190’s at 2880 as well with R26 with another mild load as I can get to 2930 without pressure signs.
