7mm-08 can it push the bergers well?

Ok so I'm looking to do a cal switch from 308 to 7mm-08. The wind drift advantage and BC advantage alone looks to be well worth it. My question is does a 26" barrel with an 1 in 8 twist capable of pushing the 180gr bergers the way they were intended to be pushed? What would be my range of supersonic to subsonic break? Is the SMK168s and SMK 150s perform better in the 7mm-08 due to added velocity?

Also am I better off sticking with the 308 and just spending the extra money on the Lapua 155s?

Any advise or experience will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Merritt

Re: 7mm-08 can it push the bergers well?

I just got my GAP 7mm08 and have not been able to get it to the range. I think, after looking at powders, bullets, case capacity, etc. that it is probably best with 162-168 gr bullets. That being said, I have an 8.7 twist and a bunch of 175 Berger BTHP bullets and I am definitely going to try them when I can.
If your rifle is mag fed you may have issues with bullet seating length vs. powder capacity. I ran into that with the 168 Berger and 162 Amax.

mwroseberry,

If you can push (and I think it's possible in a 26" or longer barrel) a 180 gr Berger VLD at only 2625 FPS, it will stay supersonic till........1375 yds at sea level. More if your higher.

A .308 155 Lapua launched @ 2950 FPS goes sub @ 1125 yds. same ASL.

I prefer the 162 A-max started @ 2725 FPS. It's good to 1325 yds or so.

i run 162amax 9tw 24" 2750fps, i wouldn't go any heavier than 168. i would advise the 284 or 280ai if you want to run the 180's I think it is better suited for the ultra heavies.

Re: 7mm-08 can it push the bergers well?

Thank you gentlemen for the replies. It sounds like I'd be better of sticking to the 168smk and smaller so the 1 in 9 twist should work. Thanks as this has helped me alot with my barrel selection.

Thank you,
Merritt

I am running 180 VLD Hybrids in my 280. With a 25" 8.5 Twist Barrel and 56.7 RE-22 I'm getting 2770 and it stays supersonic to around 1400. It was great at R.O. with a 17 MPH wind I was only holding around 1MIL wind. I don't see why 7-08 wouldn't push them just fine.

Re: 7mm-08 can it push the bergers well?

The 155 scenars are a little bit over hyped. I don't think they will get anywhere close to the wind drift of your 7mm-08.

Agreed. Real world dope was disappointing compared to other new 155 offerings: 155.5 Berger and 155 (2156) Sierra. Not to mention not being a typically jump friendly bullet.

Get the 7-08. If your going to put a barrel on it then at least try and upgrade to something that can outperform your 308 without spending more to reload for it. I know a couple guys shooting 7-08's in the matches I shoot and they are hammers. They hit 1000 a lot better than the 308's. The only way you might stand a chance compared to the 7-08 with a 308 is with the 208 AMAX's.

Check out this (web address below) if you haven't already. I love 6mmbr.com. They have some excellent insight into the accuracy side of things.

Just depends on what you are looking for. The stevens 200 I am working on came as a 7mm08 so I still have the barrel. Might keep it as a "switch barrel" for a change-up. I had not thought of that until reading this post actually, Thanks!!

One downside some people push is the "available factory match grade ammo" argument. That is one argument that so many people make when clinging to 308 Win. (It is true, but to dedicated reloaders, who cares? all of my ammo is "match grade"!!!)

That's why I have four rifles, one of which I have not even fired yet, and I am already wondering what to do or get next!!

yeah I'm on that sight weekly. My brother has the 7mm-08 stevens but he can't push any bullets with a higher grain weight than 120 because the twist is so stinking slow. That's why I am debating which way to go. As long as I can get ahold of some 208a maxes I might just stick with getting a heavy barrel 308 and deal with it until I can afford a 260rem barrel swap and cal. change.

Thanks,
Merritt
