7mm SAW

Tick Tock, Tick Tock, It's a waiting game for me now, waiting on my bolt/bushing work, my barrel ( August!) and getting it all into Claytons hands. I guess the 300WM will see action this Deer season, but please keep this thread going, I need all the information I can get. In the meantime, I will order some brass& Whidden dies from WTO soon.

Tag for later. Looks like this would be a good choice for a carbon barrel on my Tikka CTR for a lightweight hunting rifle.

Same charge as 162s going 2824. Sticky bolt sometimes at 42.6 with the 180s so its close

That's really quick considering the charge weight.

Looks like they're sold out everywhere here at the moment. I still have 5 boxes of 162s and 2 boxes of 160TMKS to get through though. I do have a box of sierra 183s, I wonder...

I should have some data for the carbon build on Tuesday, finally getting the chance to shoot it in.

Went out and got some data on the new gun today. Shot the carbon barrel in with 70 rounds at 43.5gr of Reloader 16 with the 162 ELDs. Found a load that shoots sub-half MOA between both rifles as well, so have settled on that as the go to load for now. Both rifles have a node at 45.8gr, with average velocities of 2829fps, and 2857 for the carbon and steel barrels, respectively. There is a node for the carbon barrel at 44.3gr as well. The carbon barrel hasn't sped up much yet though so I'll retest after another 50 rounds or so.

Specifics for the load is as follows:
Brass: Lapua .308 Palma SRP
Projectile: Hornady 162gr ELD-M
Powder: Reloader 16
Charge Weight: 45.8gr
COAL: 2.900"
Barrel Lengths: 26"
Velocity/SD/ES/Barrel: 2857fps SD: 1.2 ES: 3 (Proof Research Medium Palma); 2829fps SD: 4.3 ES: 10 (Proof Research Carbon Sendero)

Pretty sure I'm set on a 7SAW for my upcoming build. Has anyone rented a reamer from WTO? I reached out to them to see what the process was like and haven't heard back.

Has anyone tried the 171 matchburner or the new Berger 175 elite hunter projectile?

Can anyone give me a total case volume in grains of water full to the case mouth? This would help me play with with the SAW in Quickload.

Hmm. I have a Rem 700 SA and a Bartlein 2b contour 9 twist barrel in the safe. Is a 9 twist enough for the 180’s?

I've had some dramas with the Hornadys so am switching over to the Berger 175 Elite Hunters. If anyone's interested, here's a comparison of 162 ELD-X, 162 ELD-M, 160 TMK, 175 Elite Hunter and 183 SMK. I'll be using either 2000MR or Reloader 16 for the 175s.

Alpha seems to be nearly as consistent as lapua in weight. For sure the alpha necks are more round.

What is min barrel length for complete powder burn?

Could be great application using in a hunting rifle. Thinking a Barrett Fieldcraft has a 3.00” internal mag box, could rebarrel and have a light handy hunting rifle, go as short as 18” suppressed. Or try the same with a Tikka (change out bolt stop to their intermediate 6.5x55 length) or even the 700 SA I have laying around.

Would extend range over the standard 7mm08.

If anyone's interested, I tested the 2000MR this morning.

Ran a ladder and had these results:

Projectile: Berger 175gr Elite Hunter
OAL: 2.940"
CBOL 2.214"
Primer: CCI 450
Barrel Length: 26"

Charge Weight (grains)/ Velocity (fps):

42.0 - 2622
42.4 - 2619
42.7 - 2664
43.0 - 2665
43.4 - 2682
43.7 - 2697
44.0 - 2723
44.2 - 2759
44.7 - 2773
45.0 - 2796
45.3 - 2807
45.7 - 2816 - Slightly flattened primer
46.0 - 2827 - Flattened primer, slight flow
46.2 - 2852 - Flattened primer with flow
46.4 - 2872 - Flattened primer with flow. Slight heavy bolt lift

Howd 45.3 shoot? Being dead of summer and just under pressure with 2000MR which isnt exactly temp sensitive that might be a decent node

I only shot single rounds to look for rough node locations and find the upper limit. I'm thinking of running the next ladder between 45.0 - 45.5 gr now but am definitely leaning toward 45.3gr.

For you fellas with the SAW Type II chamber, you'll get higher speeds than this I'd suspect. Mine is Type I with a freebore extension (0.100" freebore)

180 ELDMs in a .150fb I'm hitting pressure at 2760. 27" tube. That's with varget though. I think RL26 will get me there or higher without issue

Ever try 4451 or R16 in 7SAW.

I was really interested in the cartridge but decided I wanted more cowbell

I had compression with the 175s and RL16 from 45.0 grains so I didn't fire those today. No need to now. RL16 was awesome for the 160gr class projectiles though. I'm keen to hear how you go with the RL26. I'm going to start hording RL26 I think as I want to buy a 7SS reamer and a tempest magnum bolt to run in one of these rigs. RL26 is rocking horse shit in Aus

RL16 didnt work. Crunch crunch.

Based on what RL26 does with 147s and 150s in 6.5CM and2 260 I think itll work very very well with 180s in 7SAW. Maybe even 162s

Working on RL26 as im going 7SS as well

They only went down to 26". I would like to see how short you can go and get decent velocity.

Ordered all of my parts for a semi lightweight hunting build in 7 SAW yesterday.
SS Rifles stock
Hawkins DBM
Lone Peak Fuzion Ti
Proof carbon 24" Sendero Light 1:8.8
Trigger Tech Special
Not sure on scope yet
I'll be using Alpha brass and probably RL16 but maybe Varget. Shooting Nosler 168gr ABLR at hopefully at least 2800fps

Hey guys.
Only just started playing with my SAW. It has the short throat chamber so I decided to try some Berger VLD 168gn Hunters as they have a short Base to Ogive.

Rifle is a Tikka T3 running a 26" Proof barrel, 8 twist. Manners carbon prs stock with mini chassis.

These results are with only around 50 rounds down the tube and during fire forming Lapua brass. Should hopefully see a jump in velocity once i shoot it more and use the formed cases. Accuracy has already been fantastic.

Powder - Varget/AR2208
Cases - Lapua Palma
Primers - CCI 450
Projectiles - Berger VLD Hunters 168gn
Ladder Test 1 - 0.01" off lands (2.1095" CBTO)
Ladder Mini Test - 0.005" off lands (2.1145" CBTO)

Thanks to Simia Del for your help (plus the barreled action ?)

I'm planning to shoot the 180hybrids well over 2700fps in the short chamber with alpha brass and 28" barrel.
I have varget and h4350.
Should I just order some reloader 16 or try what I have?

From what I understand from talking to Clayton at WTO with the heavies RL16 is the way to go.

That’s no worries mate, that looks a shitload better than the configuration I had it in.

Oooops.
2700. Fixed it
That’s easily achievable. I had safe loads with 2000MR at that pace to about 2750fps. Results were not reliable though.

What do you guys think about the Nosler 168gr ABLR’s going 2800fps in a 24” proof carbon with Alpha brass and RL16?
