So, for some reason, I have this desire to find a short action/.473 bolt face catridge to run 150-162 gr bullets out of, an I'm wondering if there's anything better for it than 7mm-08/7mm-08 AI. Has anyone tried doing a 7mm version of the 6/6.5 SLR?

It'd have more case capacity than a 7mm Creedmore, but with the better shoulder angle, etc... than the 7mm-08...

I am thinking about a short action 7mm. I have lots of Winchester and black hills match 308 brass and would like to use if possible.

700 pattern bolt rifle and possibly a barrel for my AR10

7mm saw
7mm slr
Plain 7mm/08
7/08 AI - prefer not to fireform

It looks like dies for the 7mm SAW are $240-300 dollars. I would have to rent the reamer.

I would prefer to use my 308 brass, not fireform, and run in a shorter barrel.

Purpose - hunting and precision

What info can you help me with on these options?

7 SAUM. Just finished my build. Stinging 180’s at 2900+ with single digit SD’s and .25 MOA accuracy. Norma and I slept both make brass as well. Dies aren’t crazy wildcat expensive.

Edit: just saw the bolt face sentence. Sorry. My vote for that would be 7-08 AI

Being that you've stated more than once you'd prefer to not have to fireform, I'd rule out the 7-08 AI. I also suspect because of the 40 degree shoulder it won't function correctly in a large frame AR.

Unless you use the Lapua palma brass for the SAW, you're likely not going to reap the full benefits of it. WTO is estimating velocities for the SAW in a 20" barrel at 27-2750 fps with the 162 eld-m and 28-2850 with the 150's with palma brass. Without it, i'd assume velocities to be 50-100fps slower. Not sure how it would work in a gas gun as I've never heard of it being done yet.

Haven't heard much about the 7 SLR but I'd assume the cost to be near or equivalent to getting the dies and renting the reamers and gauges from WTO.

Personally, I'd just do the 7 SAW. You're going to have to make sacrifices any which way you go whether it being fireforming, cost, or velocity. The SAW to me just seems the simpler option and people that are using them are seeing impressive speeds with more temp stable powders than having to use RL17 or 2000mr to get the velocities up in the 7mm-08.
