I have a pre-14 AX 338 lapua, it’s mainly collected dust as I don’t have any components for 338.

I bought a new magnum bolt so I can run 300 win mag (which I do have components for). But, what barrel tenon do I use? I am under the assumption I can use AXMC.

Also If I can, and I choose to get another bolt for 308, can I use the kit to feed the short action cartridges?

AX338 isn't the smaller M27 tenon. Only the AWM used M27 (for long actions).

Did you get an AXMC 300WM bolt? I always wondered if the AX338 and AXMC actions were identical except for the quick change barrel feature.

I got an “AX” 300 wing mag bolt. But the AXMC would be a lot easier moving forward.

Sounds like I should pop the barrel off and verify the tenon.

Maybe in the UK it might be different. But in the states, all the quick change barrel long action/magnum rifles are M30. Mostly known as post 2014 (but there are some pre 2014 AXMCs) The AX338 still uses the old AW actions but in a AX chassis so it still uses the M27 tenon. Or basically if it's a long action, and takes double stack mags, it's a M30. This is not including some of the newer stuff made for special departments(German G22)

AX338 is a bulkier long action which is visibly similar if not identical to the AXMC, and I am certain it is the same in the US too. There are photos on sale posts here that depict this:

https://www.snipershide.com/shooting/threads/wts-accuracy-international-ax338-not-multi-cal.6947393/

(first link has a user confirming large tenon)

Only the pre-14 AX uses the AW action.

I believe mine does take a double stack 338 mag. I’m not home currently or I’d verify. It’s fat I know that.

Some UA dude saying his AI is the bees knees. And I think he said this rifle was in 338LM

How many payments of $75.99 did they get ya for on the AI bandana?

You think I can? I don't want to hit the .308 wall everyone talks about... 🤣🤣
Oh my bad. I wasn't sure if that was a .308 or 6.5 because you said you shot 6.5 this weekend.

If that is a .308 you should head to the 10 yard pistol range. Bullet drop should be manageable at that distance...

I probably need to twirl my Kestrel after every shot though right? Can't be too careful...

You don't have to do that. Take your lousy .308 to an indoor range. Shoot a tiny group at 10 yards, take your best target outside to a 600 yard range, snap some photos of your 0.14 inch group at 600 yards and post them on instagram.

We all know dudes are doing that around here. The amount of guys posting tiny groups claiming they were shooting at 100 yards or beyond is questionable at best. Strange how everyone has become a World Champion shooter on the forums and on Instagram. Yet I rarely see it at the range in real life and my main range is where they host one of the bigger F class events every year....

When I moved back to Illinois, I met a few shooters into precision shooting. I don't have much of an ego so I was fine talking about my AI AT only being a ~0.8 moa rifle. Typical shit talking about my 5k setup getting killed by their custom ARs...blah blah

Went shooting one day and I don't think I saw any of them shoot a single group under 2 moa that day. It uhh...wasn't pretty. Two of the dudes were pretty humble about accepting their 1 minute guns. The other turned into a damn good pistol shooter. lol

Bloke on the Range and Polenar Tactical had this 1 MOA All Day Long challenge a while back. Some other guntubers joined in, like 9 Hole Reviews and Forgotten Weapons.

Now, our AI’s wouldn’t qualify as they aren’t 10.5 lbs or less (including scope), but it was an interesting challenge nonetheless. 10 shots, no sighters, from a bench, 50yds or longer.

Full roolz

Of course. Those kinds of guys are why I come here. You just have to weed out some of the nonsense to find those dudes.

I've been here a long time but I almost never post. I'm recovering from surgery so I've been on here a lot lately. I learned about Snipershide from my FFL who became a good friend. He is LEO and was on the SWAT team when I met him. His FFL business was one of his side hustles. He is a really good shooter. I learned a lot from him. He also showed me how to assemble ARs, reload ammunition, etc.
I think the real difference is the people who shoot one good group and say their rifle is capable of that versus consistent performance on demand. I value the latter exclusively, hence shooting a lot of matches.

IMO a gun isn't sub-MOA until it shoots that well consistently and under match conditions.
I agree. Easy for people to cherry pick their best groups and feed the ego on the internet.

Today I got off my belly and worked barricades and tripods. And, shot many oranges and apples on pikes.

It could be better. I think I spent too long shooting. Fatigue sets in fast after 3.5 hours of shooting.

It's not my best. Lessons were learned. Got advice from an currently serving Army Sniper Instructor on both barricade and tripod shooting which helped.

But, I need better DOPE. Shooting apples and oranges at 225 yards? No problem. 302 yards? I struggled and am still studying why... Will try again another day. Will share when I got better answers.

Here's a photo of some "vintage" AIs for everyone to salivate over. There are also some Swing and Paramount rifles in the photo, but looks to be about 9-10 AIs. Probably the most in one collection/club, though I expect to beat that number soon.

I have seen some of these in person and they are a mix of single shot and magazine fed Coopermatches. Most are surprisingly late serial numbers, going up to about 2001. I'm typically not interested in Coopermatches and am looking to get rid of all of mine soon, but late Coopermatches are interesting in that they have an additional lock-ring pin on the side of the action, like AWMs did after about 1997/1998 (side pin is just for positioning the lock-ring). It's not a hidden fact that the bolt-heads are the same as AWMs, and early Coopermatches were actually available with magnum and Lapua magnum boltfaces. In theory, you could remove the bolt-head on a 308 Coopermatch and fit it onto an AWM...

Just for a laugh, here is one of my "spare" Coopermatches with a green Schmidt.

A 1996 review for reference.

Couple years back we floated the idea of an AI only shoot in Utah or CO. I can’t recall. We should totally do that. Let’s see who can shoot and who can talk 🥳
Unofficial team ai Utah is always representing.... Dmr match last week, NF elr challenge this weekend... Kinetic comp marathon sniper challenge in July wtf you at?

I don't disagree. I've called out a dude twice now on here who has posted a .4", 20-shot group, in 18-21 MPH wind, at 278 or something yards... with a home-built AR
He went off the deep end so far, that he didn't realize he beat the world record for a 10 shot group at 300 yards by about 40%. Then he doubled down, became an honorary SWAT member, and added more feats of shooting in another thread.

You can't even get on YouTube without it. That Overton Windex fag claimed a tiny 500 yard group on camera...but did everything but film his impacts. He's also the 2,403 yard shot on a can of Redbull liar. Same thing...5 cameras, but none that could verify his claims.

*****

However, some still have integrity. And their word is worth more than impressing some stranger on a forum. Can't lump everyone together.

I’m in Idaho but find myself in SLC area 1-2 times a month. I’d love to shoot and maybe learn how to get 308 past 800.

And @mercracing its a given. Only gangsters and criminals shoot unsuppresssd. It’s so uncivilized. So ungentlemanly. I was raised better than that. Took a guy shooting last week (nice dude) who is newer to the sport. 16 inch braked 308? I’d love to stand next to that. Thank you sir may I have another.
