Hey guys coming out of the shadows here. I'm currently overseas right now and have limited means to spend my money and am looking at getting a good bolt gun, and have some questions and am looking for recommendations. As I want to get the ball rolling so when I am stateside again I'll have a nice rifle. Wanting a rifle thats 18-20 inches in barrel length and am knocking around the idea of a suppressor. I'm wanting to hit out to or past 1000m within a reasonable degree of accuracy. I want a 308 as I'm set up to handload that at current. Planning on using 175gr sierra HPBT.
So here are my questions
1.Proprietary inhouse action or Blueprinted rem700. My only experience is with the latter and I've experienced good results with accuracy 1/2 moa. Is there that much more of an improvement over accuracy, longevity, and reliability.
2.I've been thinking about a GAP or Black ops rifle(yea I know its like chevy vs ford on here) can anyone tell me of there experiences with them particularly the gladius or kukuri and I'm curious about black ops ranch rifle.

3. And is $4000+ really worth it or in the end would I just be paying for a name. I don't have kids and am not married so I don't have to deal with that can of worms on purchases like that.

Basically I'm trying to get as close to the darpa XM-3 without shelling the money that IBA is asking. As I have a very soft spot in my heart for those weapons.

Take'r easy

Re: Actions and rifle cost?

I am not going to get into the GAP versus Black Ops thing because it is not worth anyone's time and every one has an opinion. I can say that they are both great builders and I have rifles by both and continue to buy them as money is available.

The Gladius is built off a Remington 700 action trued up and the Black Ops are made off of the Defiance Actions. I also have both and the 700 action that I have on a M40A3 from GAP is as smooth as it comes. My Defiance action is also super smooth so I would put them on Par with each other except the 700 receiver has to be trued but the Defiance comes that way from the manufacture.

The two rifles you mentioned would be excellent for what you are wanting to do but also take a look at the Crusader, and Thunder Ranch as they are built off of a Defiance action and you can get the barrel cut to what ever size you want. On that same not I would look at Recon from Black Ops too.

The bottom line is you can't go wrong with either smith. I would talk to Ken Lin at GAP and inquire about time lines and also call or email Mike Bush at Black Ops - both are on Sniper's Hide a lot so you can also PM them too. Both are very good at getting back to you and working through your build process with them.

Is it worth the money - also subjective but I have had stock rifles in the past and now have precision rifles and I can say the difference in rifles is huge but it can also come down to the shooter. You are paying for the persons time, expertise, equipment, and other overhead to put out a high end product. That time is worth something. These are one off rifles built by an individual who meticulously works the rifle through the build - is it worth it - to me it has been.

When it comes to Precision Rifles, for the most part, they are all top quality but what you really want to think about is what stock do you want to run and what features do you want - Manner's or McMillan, AICS and there are others too so you are not always bound by what you see on the Smith's websites.

I did just like you are doing - whenever I deployed I started a build process so when I got back it was waiting for me upon my return. It gave me something to research and look forward to when the rest of my day kind of sucked. Good luck with the deployment and build.

Re: Actions and rifle cost?

If money is an issue, then there are other ways of going about this that can save lots of cash vs buying a rifle already built from these names. The rifle would be just as accurate.

Re: Actions and rifle cost?

Like JSTARSZ mentioned take a look at the Crusader! I have one and had great success at 1k. its capable of more! Having a custom rifle over a stock rifle is like driving a Corvette over a Honda Civic.

Re: Actions and rifle cost?

JSTARSZ, what have been your best groups with the GAP M40A3? They guarantee .5 MOA, I was just curious if it is better.

Kahai808, what kind of accuracy are you getting at 1000? I'm currently debating between an M40A3 and the Crusader. Decisions, decision. lol.

Re: Actions and rifle cost?

Montana, getting great accuracy with factory ammo to 1k, under a min for sure. i shoot at a 10 inch plate, i miss some here and there but thats me messing up with the wind or my cant is off. I'll be building up a load when i get back stateside and i'll keep you up dated.

You'll do great with either of your decisions!!!! Good luck. I have a Surgeon .260 waiting till i get back that i'll be playing with!!!!!!

I am off a bipod and rear bag only from the prone. It will routinely shoot 1/2 MOA and occasionally I can scare myself with better - the kind of group as you are looking through the reticle and you begin to freak out at around the third round knowing you have to make it to five without screwing up - you know the group. The GAP M40A3 is as good as it gets in my stable for the military replicas. As I was in the Army I never felt a M40A3 before but I liked it so I got it and have not been disappointed.

I would think of your choice coming down to the length of barrel, weight of total system and the stock choice and that is really about your likes and dislikes.

Re: Actions and rifle cost?

Blackhawk 41 - I just sent a PM over to you

The NEW STALKER GEN 2 Sniper Weapon System, Rangemaster Precision Arms action .308 cal, with 4 lug bolt, STRIKE 30 Series chassis system with folding stock and 16" Standard match barrel or 16" Heavy Tactical Profile match barrel, Rangemaster 2 stage competition user adjustable trigger, trued and blueprinted action is standard. Uses AICS magazines

Accuracy work is standard - Might be something you should take a look at

Thanks for the info. The A4 stock looks most comfortable, and it just has the "cool" factor of being the Marines signature rifle. What's the longest you've shot with your A3?
