I had a good friend pass away today. He was a Vietnam Veteran and his wife has very little money. Since he was not active duty I think the government will only pay $600 towards burial expenses. The family was going to just choose cremation, but that will cost $2400.

I am just not sure what you do in this type of situation and thought since he was a Veteran I might could find someone here who has been in a similar situation with a friend or loved one.

I hate to be depressing, but I also honor our Veterans. I appreciate any suggestions. I am not asking for financial hello from Hide members. I just need some advice.

When my Father passed I contacted the VFW and had an Honor Guard present. Very fitting burial that I'm certain he would have appreciated. Sorry for your loss and good luck in your endeavor. Your devotion to this Veteran will not be forgotten.

Go to VFW or American Legion and let them handle it (if there is one he used when alive, use that one). That's what they're there for, I couldn't deal with this shit without them. Family has enough to deal with, getting VA to pay for shit is a full time job. Trust me.

They'll handle all the paperwork and bullshit and they know how to navigate the system. If he's entitled to any benefits, they'll make sure he gets 'em. Try and do it yourself and you'll wind up not getting what you're due.

Sorry for your loss.
