Sidearms & Scatterguns Airweight .38 issue

My dad bought a Smith Airweight .38 back around 1979 while we were stationed at Ft. Buchanan PR. I know, for a fact, that it hasn’t been fired more than 20 times. I also know that +P’s haven’t been put through it. My sister suggested buying dad a laser for it for Christmas but when I looked at it I noticed the crack that is shown in the picture. Any snubby fans ever has this problem?

Looks like the side-plate seam to me.

Plus 1 on side plate seam. I was hoping I hadn’t gone blind and missed something so had to ask.
