Funny thing about 'work'. A very vocal capitalist can sit on his fat ass all day and say he really worked. A 'commie' can run riot in the street causing untold damage and be the lazy one who shuns 'work'.
I'm thinking a rock upside the head trumps a noisy heavy object that most cant hold up for more than 10 minutes, cant run a block with, nor wield it in a competent fashion for more than 5 minutes.

John Ringo(he's an awesome writer, you guys should read his books if you haven't) wrote an article about it. It pertains to the US, but the same hold true for the brits, and I'm pretty sure he mentions them as well. I cannot find the article right now, but almost all of his writing echos the same idea, so you can get the drift by reading the other stuff. It's a very Jeffersonian outlook is the best way to describe it. The warriors of a society are content to let the public rule, and be as gentle and PC as they can be, because that in their view is what's best for the long term stability and happiness of the majority of the populous; but when it drops in the pot, they're ready in a heartbeat to take up arms and defend the society which shunned them.
