I recently got a SWFA catalog in the mail. It shows a Mil-Quad FFP 5-20x50 non-illuminated model listed for $1299.95

Part # is SSHD520X50MQ

Part # for the group buy model is SSHD520X50MQI

I called SWFA and inquired about this model about a week ago and was told it should show up on SWFA's web site in 3 or 4 weeks. (I haven't been able to log on to the hide due to a password problem - so I appologize if this is old news).

Wishful thinking has me hoping there will be a group buy price on this one too........? Probably not, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Not sure how you figure that since the HDMR uses a 6X erector compared to the SS's 4X and also has a 34MM tube and even better glass.

I'd say they're giving people who don't need illumination an opportunity to have the same scope and save $200 for a feature they won't need.

Some things never change do they Cory?

Please site some factual data as to why a 34mm tube is better than a 30mm tube?

Ditto on the, "even better glass".

Re: Another new SWFA scope - SSHD5-20x50MQ-non illum?

The bigger the outside diameter the bigger the inside can be or thicker the tube can be. It allows for more adjustment range too. There's nothing wrong with a 30MM tube, it does the job just fine. Look at the regular old SS10X42 for example, they usually have 140-150MOA of adjustment which is a lot and still has more than sufficient tube thickness, I have one that's beat to hell and it's held of great. There's also 1" tube scopes that have well over 100MOA of travel. The bigger the tube the more you can get in there though be it tube diameter, internals, or adjustment.

I was simply stating that it's no more of a direct head to head competitor for the HDMR than just about any other FFP mil/mil scope out there and that the features weren't the same. After running a HDMR at a match a couple months back and checking out my friends SS5-20 he received last week I'd take the SS over the Bushnell personally. For me the illumination is a huge benefit and I also like the feel of the knobs better on the SS, not that the HDMR is bad at all. The glass on the HDMR was a little better but the SS was no slouch with it being about on par with NF glass. The reticle on the SS seemed to be a lot more usable than the HDMR on low magnification too but that's going to happen since its 4X vs. 6X erector and two very different reticle designs.

Dang you swfa if u would have told me about the non illum option coming I may have ordered your scope over the USO i ordered. But then again you don't have a min/min version either :-(.

Re: Another new SWFA scope - SSHD5-20x50MQ-non illum?

What else was there in the catalog about the SS line?? Any new reticles for the fixed 10X, 16X, or 20X?? I am sooooooo hoping for a 16X & 20X with the Mil-Quad reticle!!

Praying is actually more like it!!

The catalog shows the 10x42HD with the Mil-Quad ($799.95). Unfortunately the 16x42 and 20x42 still only show the Mil-Dot reticle.

There was brief mention awhile back on the Optics Talk forum from ILya that he was evaluating a couple of SS prototypes. However, after that casual "carrot", anyone in the know has been very tight lipped.

On another note, Chris from SWFA posted this in the Optics Talk shout box yesterday - "Look for a big promo starting Black Friday and running through Cyber Monday."

Now we just need an SS in the 4-14x range

Let's be ambitious and hope for a 3-15x50 w/ illumination.

X10000! A 3x15 with the same features would make me spend some more coin at SWFA! Very pleased with my5x20 HD's

Re: Another new SWFA scope - SSHD5-20x50MQ-non illum?

I just would love for them to retrofit the Mil_Quad to an existing 10X, 16X or 20X and I would be happy!!

Or even better yet, if I could get a fixed 20X, Mil-Quad, w/50mm Objective, I would be buying at least 2... like right now!!

Both of those requests present a very affordable, very doable situation. I don't require much to make me happy!! Regardless of what that other person that moved away thinks!!

The last specs I saw showed that the SS 5-20 had more adjustment with a 30mm tube then the HDMR has with 34mm. 34mm may make it possible to have more elevation, but that doesn't meant the scope maker took advantage of it.

I'm not sure how they did it, but SWFA crammed a ton of elevation into that 30mm scope.
