Re: AR in a 308

How much money do you want to spend? How accurate do you want? What is the purpose of this particular AR-10? Carbine? Long range target? Long range sniper support weapon? Do you want to go gas piston? Are you going to hunt with it?....Give us more info and we can throw our opinions in the hat...SmokeRolls

Re: AR in a 308

i have heard good things about the dpms sass it doesnt have the price tag of a m110 not as fancy either but that leaves plenty of room for optics ammo etc, i would shop around you can find one for just under 2k with the magpul stock but stay away from places like gunbroker some guys on there are asking 3500 just because they can most gun shops will tell you the waiting list is aprox 4 months for those rifles but in reality it is more like 2 because by the time they get it in the guys on the list have found one somewhere else or they have lost thier jobs and cant pay for it.

Re: AR in a 308

Any ar-10 in 20" barrel should do the trick. I have 2, one in 20" and one in 16". I love mine. If you want alittle more precision and alittle more money go with the AR-10T. If you want to spend alot more jingle you could buy a Knights Armament. Or an AR-10 that has been massaged by Gap or someone similar. SmokeRolls

Re: AR in a 308

Check out this link http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=62&t=378850 , it's biased towards the Armalite brand but it does give a good explanation of some of the differences between the Armalite and the DPMS brands. The M110 is manufactured by these fine folks http://www.knightarmco.com/. One thing to remember about the 308 AR rifles is that there isn't the standardization between the different manufacturers like there is with the 5.56 rifles. There's three different type's of magazines in use right now among the various manufactures'. Both the Armalite and the DMPS rifles are good quality. Do some research and you'll find several threads with many opinions on the subject.

Re: AR in a 308

You have a few choices:

Armalite AR-10
American Spirit Arms ASA-308 Side Charger
DPMS LR-308 in all it's flavors
Fulton Armory Titan
Knights Armament SR-25
LWRC SABR/REPR
POF P-308
Robinson Arms XCR-M (Still in development)

The DPMS, Fulton, KAC, POF and Robinson all use the SR-25 magazine format where as the ASA-308 uses AR-10 or Modified M14 mags. I'm not sure on the LWRC.

Before a specific configuration or even Mfg. can be recommended we need to know your budget. The DPMS LR-308 models start around $1,000 where as the Fulton starts around $1800 and probably closer to $2,500 after you make a few mods. The ASA and POF start around $2,500 and the Knights Armament is even more expensive. No pricing info on the Robinson has been released since they have yet to produce a complete prototype, but will likely be somewhere in the middle of the price range.

We will need to know what distances you will be shooting. If you are planning on shooting to 1,000 yards you probably want a 20"+ barrel.

Do you plan on shooting off hand after trekking 10 miles through the woods while hunting? If so, you probably don't want a 12-15lb rig.

tolson68 : Don't forget the new FN SCAR 308.....She's a gas piston badboy in 18" I believe.......And you can order it for around $2,500-$3,000 ....I would look seriously into that one...I just forgot to meantion it earlier.....SmokeRolls

Re: AR in a 308

Also dont forget the new Larue OSR. They are taking preorders now. but if it performes like their .223 stuff, it should be awesome, and i think its a pretty good deal at under $2500. Like i said, preorder and your going to have to wait, but it should be .5-1 moa no problem with good ammo.

The Rock River LAR-8 (what I have) in varmint barrel is a great shooter, but is darned heavy. With scope and a full magazine you are talking 13 pounds.

Re: AR in a 308

I haven't really handled much of anything other than the DPMS 308's so I can't really comment on "who's Better". I'll leave that to the people who know. I did build this one for a little under $2k using DPMS recievers and BCG. LPK is RRA 2-stage and the barrel is a Krieger Criterion 20". I use an HVT and a SS 10x scope. It shoots better than I can.

these use FAL if i am not mistaken, which is good if you already have one, and they are cheap and not hard to find.

Re: AR in a 308

Thanks guys I knew there were a few I forgot to mention.

[Edited]: I also forgot to mention the Noveske N6, which I'm not sure if it's even available anymore until Noveske gets caught up on back orders and the barrel shortage gets cleared up.

Re: AR in a 308

Lot of solid .308 AR's mentioned here, those with a good rep will do the trick. My factory barreled AR10T (Armalite) is still sub moa after 2500+ rnds even when your not quite on your game. It has always been a quality piece that you can count on everyday to peform as expected. There is still no slop anywhere in it. A little advice, I'd get either an adjustable gas block or Tubb's Carrier Weight System for any .308 AR, thier cycling is pretty brutal when unchecked. Good luck.
