When did you get to Tal Afar? We had a couple teams there from about October 04-January 05. They spent a lot of time at the castle at that time.
Around late March/early April 2005 - 2006. The Sarai District was our Troop's primary AO and we'd launch patrols from the Castle often.

I don't want to bust anyone's bubble here with regard to the Allen soft case. It was never intended to be used in the field. It, in combination with a cardboard box that could be ordered by the supply sgt., and is referenced in the TM, was intended for shipping the rifle back to Remington for maintenance. Put the rifle in the Allen case and the case in the box. High speed low drag packing for such a precision instrument. I won't berate anyone for wanting one, its part of the kit, I have one myself and occasionally use it to go to the range but usually not for the M24.

I personally have no desire to obtain that piece of kit. Good background info on it though, so thanks for sharing.

Not sure if this pic was previously posted on this thread, but I thought it was interesting. (note: improvised cheek piece, flash hider, one-piece scope rail, etc)

It may be in the thread but what is the story with these rifles? Are they still M24s? The top picture looks to still be a long action but the other picture appears to b e a short action.

It sort of goes like this...

Remington: "Hey big Army, we've got these upgrades available for the M24 that'll give you a suppressor, detachable magazine, FFP optic, NV capability, adjustable cheekpiece, everything the warrior needs for modern warfare"

Big Army: "Yeah, no. We're good."

Individual Army Units: "Hey Big Green, if we send our M24's in for refit, can we pay for those M24A2 upgrades?"

Remington: "Sure, we like money, send it on in"

Individual Army Units: "Kick ass, here's our credit card number"

Big Army: "Hey, Individual Army Unit, what's this I hear you're modifying government property without permission"

Individual Army Unit: "But it's a Remington rifle and Remington is making the mods and they're more better for our mission."

    Big Army: "Stop it"

Individual Army Unit: "Ooook, but we can we keep the guns?"

Big Army: "Fine, we'll be going back to Remington to make similar upgrades to the M24 anyway in a few years"

    Individual Army Unit: "Wait, what?"

    Big Army: "......"

With regards the second picture, the mag doesnt appear to be flush, ie directly under the ejection port, but appears to be back a bit, pic looks somewhat deceptive

It is here in the thread somewhere but, short answer, yes this is a short action magazine in the long action M24. This weapon has a modified HS Precision floor metal and 10rd magazine. The conversion was problematic so Badger Ordnance designed a DBM floor metal that would use Accuracy International 5rd DBM which works very well.

Post #299 (Oct 2019) outlines the history. Between 40 and 50 M24 rifles were sent from some units back to Remington who converted them into the M24A2 type configuration. This was done with quasi-discretionary deployment funds, but rest assured they were all long action M24 rifles. My impression is that Air Force has a contract for M24A2 rifles (and some foreign military's as well). Here's the current offerings: https://www.remingtondefense.com/sniper-rifles/m24/

PSA: EuroOptic has the Badger M24A2 DBM in stock. No affiliation, just passing it on. I don’t think these have been available anywhere for a couple years now.

Don’t know what to tell you — I got an in stock email notification this afternoon and when I click through that notification it’s appearing as in stock and moves to my cart:

I guess it could be a mistake on their part — that would be a bummer.

I just ordered the Badger Ordnance bottom metal set up for M24. It fits that stock set up. Are there any 10 round mags that fit it? Nobody can answer if there are any.. WTF?

It’s ok. Thanks for the heads up. I ordered the other version and got the last one. I just need to know if there are 10 round mags that work?

The one you ordered is the correct DBM for the M24A2 — glad someone here got the last one. It fits the long action HS Precision stock but with 308-length mags. Will fit either the original M24 HSP stock or the later M24A2 HSP stock with the adjustable cheekpiece. Don’t know about the 10-rounder availability.

Thank you. My biggest concern is magazines. I’d like 5 or 10’s. Don’t know which to get (part #). What is the purpose of this set up if I don’t get any more round capacity. If that makes sense.

Hopefully someone can confirm as I don’t have direct experience but I don’t see why an AICS short action 10-rounder wouldn’t fit — functionally it’s just a Badger M5 DBM but lengthened to deal with the oddball long action / short action M24 combo.

I just talked to Badger Ord. A.I. does not make a 10 round mag for the A2 bottom metal set up.

Man, I want a MARS rail real bad but...
    1. I will not be using it with a night vision device
    2. I hear they can be problematic holding zero
    3. It would only be for looks
    4. Pricey
    5. Sits high on receiver

Can I get some thoughts ether way please. I hate to be that guy but I am so stuck in the middle on this. My M24 is sub 1/2 MOA. I am afraid to lose that. I just got the Badger M24A2 bottom metal so it’s a tough decision.

Sounds like you need to build an A2 and keep your M24 as is : )

If you're happy with your M24 the way it is, then collect the A2 parts and sit on them untill a deal on a rifle presents itself. If you're not completely satisfied with the rifle then change it to the A2...

To be honest, nice to have either the mars or mirs as a collectable but unpractical to use regularly the scope does sit very high. Now as mentioned above you have the dbm already, get the a2 stock, have the barrel reprofiled, put in a form 4 for Allen can, get the mars then, you will have the a2 for it.

I put on the Badger M24 bottom metal and a Jewel trigger. I am not going to get the MARS rail. I don’t want to mess with perfection. The 4 inch gong was 3 shot 400 yards. 1.24 group (.31 MOA). I carried an M40A1 and A3 years ago. M24 is more accurate from my experience. This rifle is amazing.BFFE0463-EC04-44E5-81EA-88760C519C81.jpegBF71B91B-8F9A-4F4A-82D3-6832ADD089FA.jpeg62DC8BBE-7E5B-41C6-85A4-735CD8F3AF0A.jpeg

Question for you experts. I have a TBA M24 that I just put the A2 lower metal on. The trigger guard fits fine, but the magazine is extremely loose to the point it won’t consistently feed. Anyone else have this problem?

Mine are loose but no issues when feeding. The stock box Mag needed to be removed. If you leave it in the bottom metal still fits but Mag won’t sit deep enough to feed. I hope I am not insulting your intelligence but telling to make sure you remove the box magazine that is attached to action.

Everything was taken out. It’s just the bottom metal there and there is approximately 1/3” of up/down play in it. If I push the mag to the top, it’ll feed for maybe 2 rounds, but then drops and the bolt can’t pick up any rounds from the magazine. However, the magazine will not drop all the way out unless I depress the magazine release. The lower metal/magazine came directly from Badger Ordnance. Perhaps the wrong or a bad magazine was included with it?

And by “it”, I’m referring to the mag. The Trigger guard fits securely.

I take it you don’t have another Mag? Sounds like a magazine size issue.

Possibly. I got off the phone with them yesterday and what was communicated was that it is likely a machining error on their part. Likely will just exchange for a new one according to Badger Ordnance. To their credit, they’ve been very helpful about all this. I’ll update in a few days when I have more.

Keeping this thread alive - been contemplating adding an AE M24 suppressor and/or Badger M24 trigger guard with detachable magazine, but I think I may just keep it like this:

If that’s an M24R with a US Army take-off stock with camo job from military service - I would not modify it. The value of the rifle will be seriously and adversely impacted if you modify it from the original US Army take-off configuration. I’d leave it as-is, it’s a classic.
(I have one that looks fairly similar).
