Army M24 Build Thread

cool! I even got my old avatar back.

I want to start bringing over some of the technical stuff that was on the old thread:

M24 build thread

Complete SWS NSN 1005-01-240-2136

Technical Manual: TM 9-1005-306-10

Action: Remington M700 long action.
Earliest example would be a C prefix action. Production continues through today 11/14.
Most recent examples are RR prefix with a single letter suffix, A, B & C observed.
Scope mounting holes tapped #8-40. 2 iron sight holes left side of actions, on same centers as rear scope base holes, tapped 6-48.

Bolt: Standard caliber (30-06) bolt face. Body coated with Black Sandstrom dry film E859-B29 up to but not including the bolt handle. Bolt handle back is Rem tuff.
It will have a Circle M on the handle.

Barrel: 24” stainless 5R right hand 1-11.25” twist. M24 contour. Several hundred of the initial contract made by Mike Rock rifle barrels, then Remington switched to a hammer forged barrel made in house. Rock Creek barrels still makes a spec barrel. See attached drawing for spec.
Barrel is marked 7.62 NATO 6.125” from the front of the lug, Left hand side, also has a 2 letter code, XY, WB ( both observed). Right side markings include: REP in oval (Remington English Proof) Triangle w/ an X or an N in it (Observed) and an M in a circle (Magnetic Particle inspection).
Front sight base holes are drilled and tapped 6-48 1.125” and 1.688” from the muzzle.
Drawing to follow.

Recoil lug: Standard Remington M700 lug.

Triggerguard: It is a modified version of the Dakota arms M700 Custom. The trigger bow (the area that protects the trigger shoe and houses the floorplate latch) is left un-contoured with a rectangular cross section.
Badger Ordnance sold a small quantity to Remington in the mid 90’s.
current manufacturer is sunny hill mfg.
Markings, All parts, Latch, Rail and floor plate will have a letter to keep the parts together after finishing. Will have the circle M.

Scope base: Steel one piece Weaver base, similar to Picatinny but does not meet the M1913 Mil standard. Sourced from Leupold as the Mk 4 base, it has 4 slots, 2 on the front ring 2 on the rear.
Badger Ordnance sub contracted some bases. When the switch in Iron sights from Redfield’s to RPA sights was made the one piece base was replaced by a two piece version with the same pattern of slots as the one piece mount.

Scope rings: Leupold Mk 4 Ultra 30 mm rings, Patterned after the scope rings invented by Earl Reddick of Reddick Arms Development (RAD). The original Mk 4 rings were cast steel and cut above center and featured a parkerized finish. Some time after 2000, Leupold changed the rings to version 2, they are fully machined and cut on center. They appear to have been made on a turning center as the outer edges are radiused. Finish appears to be black oxide.

Iron sight bases: Original contract sight bases were Redfield, WB 490 Redfield P/N 715005 rear Redfield P/N 723001 front .175 tall. After the remaining supply of Redfield International Big bore front sights and Palma rear sight were exhausted new emergency sights and bases were purchased from Rangemaster Precision Arms (RPA) Trakker match sights. That's my exact problem too. I have the flash suppressor for the Redfield system and I need the OK Weber one.

Here is a pic of my M24R:

I have a few pictures of the M24 and Hardigg transit case that was part of the M24 SWS that I will post for reference. These first two pictures show the M24 and equipment as it is stored in the case.

I recently picked up an M24 Rebuild and found both this thread/old one immensely helpful. Thanks.

A few questions... I know it's a lot but many of these are just one word answers.

-Is there any used shops like Out Back Gun Parts that specialize in OK Weber peep sights? I'm trying to avoid ebay and gb.

-The OK rear seems to be a proprietary rail where the Redfield is more universal. I would like to shoot the rifle with iron sights and can always buy the clone correct version later. Would a Redfield rear mount be a better option ifI want to find a more inexpensive (non-Palma) rear peep sight? Seems like there is more options but i don't know a lot about match sights. Then I can hit some gun shows and look for something similar with the same Redfield rail.

-Same with the front OK mount. Any inexpensive globe front sight options that can be used for the time being that will work on a taller OK style? It would be nice to pick up something temporary from Brownells.

-I haven't shot the gun but plan on putting some Fed Gold Match through it to see how it groups. I would also like to find some decent (does not need to be match) .308 ammo that is good for plinking and reasonably accurate. If possible, I would like to find some ammo that could get close to matching the M3A Ultra BDC markings. Any suggestions? I'm fine with a bulk purchase too.

Off topic....
-Anyone know why Fed Gold Match is so inexpensive right now? I recently checked prices and found $17-18 a box. That's cheaper than late 90's prices!

I'll get some pictures of my rifle up soon. I'm going to spray the barrel/action and try to match the original spray paint on the stock/scope/bipod. It looks like Aervoe.

Thanks again and glad to see this thread is now sticky.

Congrats on your purchase I don't know where to get cheap iron sight options but I can tell you that I think you will be surprised to see how accurate the gun is. I've shot everything from cheap freedom munitions reloads to FGMM to handloads in various bullet weights and the thing always shoots between 1/2" and 3/4". It's probably the cheapest accuracy I've ever bought. My gun tends to like the 175gr bullets more than 168gr but it's pretty negligible. Happy shooting.

Getting parts for the M24 is getting harder to find and with the supply and demand the prices are only going up. The Federal Gold Medal Match 175 running close to 2650 should get you pretty close to the M118 cam. After shooting the rifle at distance you can then indicate the true drops by marks on the cam or counting the clicks after a number. If you know it's 2 clicks past the 700 meters then you write that down in your log book.

Not sure why the prices have come down on FGGM but be happy that it is and stock up while you can.

Thanks for the help! It's too bad the old thread can't be integrated into this thread. I spent hours reading it...just so much REAL info and not "Well I heard from a buddy's friend that was in Army....."

So reading more I see the OK Weber's rail is more particular about what peep sights will work. Does anyone know of other brands that work with that rail setup? I'd love to find just something inexpensive as a placeholder since I actually want to shoot it with irons for a bit.

Same goes for the OK's front sight...any other brand glove sights I can use for that mount?

Here is an initial picture I took at the gun shop. I'll get better stuff soon.

I ended up using some spray paint to fill in the bare spots on the scope tube. Also did some other small touches like painting the rear scope cap and removing the lens shade (makes it a lot easier to access the lens to clean). I'm not going to touch the main stock because the wear gives it character.

Also added a mole skin cheek pad because the elastic camo wrap kept ripping out facial hair and moved the bipod one stud forward in case I want to use the rear for a sling.

This is how she looks now....

Few questions/comments...

-This is by far the easiest rifle I've found to shoot accurately. Even with just a bipod (no rest or sandbags), it will do ragged 1/2" groups with good ammo. Even when I'm firing at a quicker pace the cluster of shots just slightly opens up. I found some really old 180gr reloads and it effortlessly did 1 MOA even with that. It seems to digest everything where as my old 700P (and my current precision AR) are both picky. I've had time behind a lot of bolt action rifles (and similar stuff like an M40A3) and I've yet to find a rifle that shoots as easily as this one.

-Should I try to hunt down a replica sling or just use the one that came with the rifle? The little tag says M24 but that would be removed anyway. The gun is never going to be sold...I'm just curious about the rarity of that sling.

-Any trick to keep the stock adjustment tight? I can lock the small wheel against the larger one but the large wheel still turns. Wasn't sure if there is a secret to get it tight.

-Does everyone run the same length of pull when compared to your standard non-adjustable rifle stocks? I know a lot of the AR guys will go to a shorter setting but since this rifle will be 95% shot from prone/bench, I figure to just roughly replicate my old 700 LOP. Just curious if anyone here runs their M24 stock shorter/longer than your other bolt rifles.

-Is the taller Harris bipod the version found on the earlier issued models? I've seen pictures of both my version and the shorter 6-9" benchrest model.

-Anyone else get lucky and have a barrel that rarely fouls? This is my first rifle that's running really clean. It will shoot the same groups even after 100+ rounds...almost feels like a waste of time to do a full barrel cleaning.

I've been nothing but impressed with this rifle/system. The M3A Ultra is a 30 year old scope but is decently clear and tracks accurately. I actually prefer the windage markings over my NF stuff.

Thanks again for the help in these threads.

It would be great if someone set up a database where all of the Rebuild owners could register (anonymously). Maybe leave the last serial number as an X. Each owner could then upload photos of various parts of the rifle since every rifle is different. Example, mine has the armory cage code on the bottom metal. Seeing all of the various paint jobs would also be cool...it would be great for ex-Army snipers to go through the pages and see if they recognize any of rifles.

I would love to get a Hardigg case for a decent price. I see one on Gunbroker for 2k - that's just silly. I am never really going to use it just want it for the kit factor.

Regulatori, really like that rifle. As far as the lock mechanism on the stock backing off, I think that was a common issue with that H&S stock. One thing that can be done is put a piece of tape (100 mile-an-hour best) in front and rear of the area you want the overall length to be so it won't back out. I am sure there are other ways that people have used.

If you want to read another thread on the M24 go over to M40 rifle. There is some good information there too, There is overlap of course.

Thanks, I actually figured out a way to get it tighter. I was told about some hex screws on the bigger wheel but didn't realize until now where they're located.
If you take the complete buttstock off (the adjustable section), you're left with just the single large wheel. On the face of the large wheel will be a small hole. When you position the hole at the 12 o clock and 6 o clock positions, you'll faintly see a hex head screws inside the buttstock. After tightening those a bit and scuffing the two mating surfaces (where the small and large wheel press together) with some steel wool or red scotch brite pad, it should tighten everything up. Mine had paint/dirt on the mating surface so that didn't help.

Just tightening those two hidden hex head screws and cleaning up the two friction surfaces makes the adjustment section feel a lot tighter/no play whatsover.

You might be able to access those hex screws just by turning the small wheel farther back....it's just a lot easier doing it with the rear section off since you can line up the holes easier.

Picked up an M24 rebuild with scope and deployment kit from my LGS. They had it hanging on the wall since last Christmas. Also picked up a front sight from Ok Weber and an RPA Trakker rear sight from HPS Ltd in the U.K.

What happened to the old M24 thread that should have still been here??

OK Sports Fans or should I say M24 fans. I still have access to the 2nd old M24 Build thread. I started that one by linking it back to the original so I'll help you out again and here it is:

http://www.scout.com/military/sniper...d?s=541&page=1

The link on the first post that should have lead to the Original M24 Build Thread is broken and editing of that post is not possible now. However, here is the link to the ORIGINAL M24 Build Thread:

http://www.snipershide.com/shooting/forum/s...4-build-thread

Maybe you all should save these links in the even this happens again. Don't think that I'm condescending or sarcastic here. I'm just a member here like you, not an administrator. I had the 2nd old site up on my screen as a tab and was easily able to recover it to here.

Also finding that 41.7 gr of 4064 with 175 SMK seated at 2.80 (or 2.220 by the ogive) is giving some nice results. Curious what others are finding that works well in their M24.

IMG_0481.JPG

I would be curious as to the speed of that load. I have not fired my M24 yet but I do use 4064 a lot in my 308s. I use 42.8Gr's with 175's and with my 20" Bartlein I get 2650fps and with a 22" Bartlein I get 2725 fps.

Sorry about any and photos that I have provided this thread over the years. Photobucket has changed their rules and free membership are no longer allowed 3rd Party Hosting to places like AR15.COM, Sniper's hide, Gunbroker etc. I'll have to find another site. If you're as pissed as I am, DITCH PHOTOBUCKET! Years of my posting on various blog sights now have dead links to photos. Let them wither on the vine and die.

Does anyone know where I can buy the M3 7.62 Nato turrets for the Mark 4 10X scope that was issued with the M24?

I don't think I have the Ultra because the bottom of my scope doesn't say "Ultra" but the turrets look the same. Also did they ever make a M118LR turret for the M24 scope?

I'm not sure about the M118LR... Mine are M118

I sent you a PM on your flash hider

"Also did they ever make a M118LR turret for the M24 scope?"

M118LR came out in 1995, but most of the M3A Ultra scopes used on M24s were made from late 1980s to early 1990s. All of them that I have seen are "M118' turrets. Never seen an M118LR turret. My guess is the trajectory of two rds is very similar. I have seen a guy on eBay selling the current military BDC turrets as shown on this post. I bought a set of all 3 knobs from a guy in CA earlier this year (spares for my 1990 dated M3A scope - as seen in the deployment case)

Did they ever change the elevation rotation direction on the Mark 4 scopes? I have a 10x Mark 4 m3 and it has counter clock wise elevation adjustments(CCW to increase elevation) and I see the M118 turrets have to be turned clock wise to increase the elevation. For reference my scope was made in 09.

Sounds like there must have been a change somewhere if your M3 is CCW. I have a 10x Mark4 M3 purchased commercially in the 90's, with an M118 marked dial and it's CW for up and right. Mine also included a 300WM elevation turret ring and has a mil dot reticle. The M118 turret ring looks just like Random Guys photo.

I had a couple of Mark 4 10x M1 scopes with the large, 1/4 MOA turrets purchased at the same time and they were CCW for up and right. Maybe after the M3 scope wasn't being produced for the Army anymore Leupold decided it would simplify production and started using the same internals as on all other Mark4 10x scopes.

From the perspective of a HP shooter, American sights (Redfield, Warner et al) have traditionally been CCW for up and right so maybe the initial requirements for the M24 were for CW rotation-but that's pure speculation on my part. My MST 100 is CCW as well as are M16A2 style iron sights.

Does anybody know if any other scopes were used on the M24? Obviously the fixed 10x Leupold was issued with the system but did they use the 3-10x Leupold at all? I want to get a period/system correct scope for my M24 and for whatever reason the 3-10x are much more affordable then the fixed 10x.

Mk4 M1's (4.5-14) almost certainly made their way on M24's as they were in the system.

The Leupold Ultra/Mark 4 M3A was the most prominent scope seen. SOF updated optics to the Mark 4 M3LR 3.5-10 (FFP) some time prior to 08' but I'm not exactly sure on the date. SOF also fielded the Nightforce NXS 3.5-15 on the Mk13s around that same time period and it was not uncommon to see M24s wearing NF glass into the twilight years, 10' to 12'. I've never seen a Mark 4 M1 4.5-14x on a M24, Not saying it couldn't have happened but its doubtful as I haven't meet to many other snipers who have cared for. The M1 dials while more precise aren't particularly fast and easy to get lost in under stress, the extra 4x is nice but the SFP setup is a trade off most of us wouldn't take.

I have an m24 countour 308 1:11.25 twist rock creek barrel on a 700. Absolute pleasure to shoot. Highly recommend.

I need some help putting together a deployment kit for me M24A2. I am not really looking for every exact item but more so to just fill in the empty spaces in my Pelican rifle case. The case i have is (472-PWC-M24A2 Rifle Case) that came pre-cut from the factory. Here is what I have so far:
