This was surprising. My miltary time included carrying around shelter halfs and the canvas mummy bag at a time when using better gear was not allowed no matter who paid for it or how much better it made life in the field.

I was happy to see pictures of soldiers using gear that was better than what could be found in the supply chain but it appears that things are going back a step.

The Army is not allowing PMAGS to be used now according to this article.

Was there something that precipitated this move?

Probably politics.. that sucks for our guys over there though.

The publication says "No Polymer Magazines", of which, PMAGs are an extremely high quality example.

Other trash, such as TapCO mags and other junker-grade detritus, falls into the same category of "polymer magazines"

My initial suspicion, and something that has been supported by opinions of friends still in the USMC, is that guys were probably buying trash-grade magazines and there was no QC. The trash-grade stuff isn't as good as the mags from Vietnam era so the military put a stop to everything that isn't an AL-bodied, tan follower magazine.

My suspicion is that this was a driving factor in it and the poor wording has made fit to stop the use of PMAGs, which is a shame.

This is simply an easy way to keep GI's from buying shit.

    Exactly, quality control.

Instead of analyzing the best, they just say no to it all.

Re: Army to not allow use of PMAGS

Fully understand that without some QC there is high probability crap will find its way to the line. Imagine snuffy showing up with his Counter Sniper.

From seeing so many PMAGS in pics I assumed they were in the supply chain as meets spec item.

another not so brilliant move by the US army.

Re: Army to not allow use of PMAGS

They make millions of them everyday. We just don't know about them.

Does out military require our troops to supply their own magazines?

Re: Army to not allow use of PMAGS

Maybe they will sell off their surplus supply of P-Mags?

Re: Army to not allow use of PMAGS

    Hi everyone,

New to the forum but I do bet that the used pmags from the army will hit the market and give us more options on picking them up.

No of course not, but a lot of guys will bring stuff to "upgrade" their gear. When supply gives you a armful of beat to hell GI mags, lots of folks toss those into the locker and run their own stuff.

Not just mags either, painted on camo & optics/sights are also common controversial ones.

The basic idea is just to turn it back in the way you got it and everythings fine. In the meantime, a lot of guys get away with/try to get away with souping up parts.

Re: Army to not allow use of PMAGS

or you have to upgrade USGI mags to self-leveling followers... and still not as good. PITA

Re: Army to not allow use of PMAGS

The article referenced "discretionary funds" being used to make unit purchases. If this happens a big thumbs up to the commander that uses his budget to upgrade the troops gear rather than buying paint to make his latrine look better.

Gose to show how much they care about our troops over putting money on government contracts in Wich the product can't match up.... We all remember dragon skin body armor. Same deal to good so it got banned.

Negative, this is not a similar situation.

Magpul PMAGs are considered throughout the industry to be a premium quality product. So much so that major manufacturers like S&W, Sig Sauer & others include them with factory rifles.

Dragon Skin has a history of false advertising, low quality control, and decertification. Not at all the marks of an industry standard.

You need to get a clue.
