Gunsmithing barrell cut down

Re: barrell cut down

I'm going to have to disagree. Before I cut my 7mm mag down to 24" I read everything I could find about trimming and asked a lot of questions of folks who had cut down magnum barrels. The general consensus was that a two inch trim on a 7mm mag or 300WM resulted in negligible velocity loss, if at all. I found two different tests - one by a gun mag and another by a SoCal LE agency - in which their particular 300WMs didn't lose ANY velocity from 26" to 24". Zero. Zilch. Confirmed the anecdotal info I'd read or been told, for sure. When I cut my 7mm RM down to 24" I not only got a handier/quicker rifle and lost negligible velocity - according to the dope charts I've proven - but I also gained about 1/4" tighter groups from the increased stiffness.

So in this specific case, I'm afraid I must disagree with my more experienced peers. Cut it ... crown it ... shoot it ... love it.

Re: barrell cut down

From the TacOps article you linked ...

"Tac Ops took a 26-inch barreled .300 Win. Mag. and chopped the barrel down in one-inch increments as they previously did with the .308 Winchester. Ten rounds of Federal Match 190-grain BTHP Gold Medal were fired from each increment. No velocity was lost from 26 inches to 22 inches. Velocity loss started to occur only after they went below 22 inches."

This was just one of the resources I used to decide to cut mine. Across all the info I could find (and it was a lot if stuff) it seemed anyone testing the velocity loss with a chrono found that this loss was, in every case, much less than any calculation or common wisdom predicted. Take the above example: there was NO loss at all down to 22 inches. So I'd have to ask myself if there's any other reason not to cut a magnum barrel? I couldn't find one, and I looked hard. There is a bit more noise and concussion I guess, but it really wasn't that noticeable to me, personally. Negligible. Of course, when I first started shooting the 7mm Rem and the 300 Win Mag using rather hot handloads I initially thought I'd butted the wrong end up to my shoulder. DAMN! Maybe my shoulder and right ear have become "calloused"?

Am I missing something else? (Pencil is out and sharpened)

Re: barrell cut down

Does anyone have specific results on a 6.5x284. I would love to shave off the weight. If I could go from 28" to 24" or 22" without major velocity loss I'm in.

Re: barrell cut down

What does the military use?

Military sniper rifles tend to have longer barrels of around 600 to 750 mm (24 to 30 inches) to allow cartridge propellant to fully burn and attain the optimum combination of low flash signature and bullet velocity. This reduces muzzle flash, helping to keep the sniper concealed. Police sniper rifles may use shorter barrels to improve handling characteristics. The shorter barrels' velocity loss is less important at closer ranges where projectile energy remains well in excess of that needed to reliably perform.

now that's funny!

Rifles are tools, and being such will work best for a specific task when configured for that task. Figure out what you use that tool for most, and set it up for that and guess what, it will probabyl shine in that role.
If you are a 'net commando and want an 18" rifle with NV rails but only shoot your rifle at the local FClass match prepared to be laughed at.
If you want a fast handling rifle for hunting in the woods, build or buy a purpose built rifle.

For the original question-you may consider leaving a little length beyond whatever the minimum the internet tells you is best, because if it works out for you well enough you may want to set the barrel back later (but keep in mind, long barrels may be fashionable again by then).
