Rifles are tools, and being such will work best for a specific task when configured for that task. Figure out what you use that tool for most, and set it up for that and guess what, it will probabyl shine in that role.
If you are a 'net commando and want an 18" rifle with NV rails but only shoot your rifle at the local FClass match prepared to be laughed at.
If you want a fast handling rifle for hunting in the woods, build or buy a purpose built rifle.
For the original question-you may consider leaving a little length beyond whatever the minimum the internet tells you is best, because if it works out for you well enough you may want to set the barrel back later (but keep in mind, long barrels may be fashionable again by then).
