Best 308 MOA out of the box for your $$$$$

Re: Best 308 MOA out of the box for your $$$$$

The search button is your friend. This question has been asked 1000 times on here. With 190 posts, I would expect you would have gathered some of this information already. With that being said, any Remington or Savage Heavy barrel 308 will serve you just fine.

Re: Best 308 MOA out of the box for your $$$$$

I have a Savage 10FP Choate Tactical that i've been happy with. You can get it from Cabela's for $649-$699. It shoots better than I do and is enough gun/stock to not have to worry about upgrading right out of the box. You can spend more $ on optics/base/rings. Some people bad mouth the stock, but it's been ok for me so far. Either that or get a Remington SPS and upgrade the stock.

Re: Best 308 MOA out of the box for your $$$$$

I have yet to own a bolt action that wouldn’t hold moa or better at 100 yards. Stick with the heavier barrel profiles and start educating yourself on reloading if you don’t reload already. It really boils down to what you like/want rifle wise.

I will say that every rifle I have has shown great improvement after I preformed a stress free bedding job on it. See gunsmith section for DIY info. Also the Online training available here will jump start your progress. That gave me consistency and understanding that would have taken years to learn on my own, if ever, without outside help and the bedding jobs have decreased my over all group averages by probably twenty to forty percent depending on which rifle.

Looking back, if I were to start over I would get a Remington 700 5r and bed it into the HS stock it comes with(Only because I have a fondness for stainless steel and the stock is of acceptable quality unlike some others that Remington uses). Run 155 scenar’s or 175 bthp’s (sierra mk or nosler cc) with varget or imr 8208 in Winchester or Lapua brass with the primers of your choice. You will be cutting 5 shot groups near ½ moa in no time. Just don’t cheep out on your precision sighting system. Buy brands of known quality with lifetime warranties and it will stay with you from one rifle to the next, or until you convince yourself the grass is greener elsewhere. But even then it will still hold its value should you decide to sell.

Ah...no. Learning to use the search function is going to save everyone a headache and be much quicker for the searcher.

I'm not even at a average shooter level yet, and I do sub .5 moa 5 shot groups with my 5r .308. To me that's alot of gun for $.

Custom accuracy for low money.

Re: Best 308 MOA out of the box for your $$$$$

You have a very strange way of wording it, but as said before, rifles are individuals. No two of the same model will shoot exactly the same with the same ammunition.

If you have to ask such a question, most any out-of-the-box precision rifle is going to outshoot you. Most will choose some form of Remington 700 as its the basis for many, many custom rifles and has the most after-market support.

If you want the best accuracy guarantee out of the box, Tactical Operations guarantees .25 MOA, you'll be hard pressed to beat that guarantee...though I have seen many others shoot that well, although without the guarantee.

Re: Best 308 MOA out of the box for your $$$$$

TRG22 would get my vote.
Remington QC is spotty. You may wind up spending just over $1000 on a 5R and not get what you're expecting.
Savage QC is much better and they are usually less expensive than 5R. OK, let's say you buy a Savage 10FP and it shoots .75 MOA. Now you want to tinker. Add more $$ for "stuff" and you still have a Savage. Not a bad rifle but it will never allow you to capture even close to what time & $$ you have invested.
The TRG22, on the other hand, comes as a proven system and offers so much for the price (especially if you do your searching ***Uh Oh, there is that word again***) for best pricing. In the TRG22 you will have zero QC issues, DBM in place (with high quality mags), great barrels that provide accuracy rivaled only by the accuracy guaranteed customs and a great trigger.

Re: Best 308 MOA out of the box for your $$$$$

The OP said best rifle out of the box for the MONEY people. This pretty much only leaves Savage. Remy 700 is a nicer rifle when built but is usually a terd out of the box. A TRG 22 is the best out of the box value? Are you fucking kidding me? Savage makes one clunky/ugly rifle but at least 80% of them shoot MOA out of the box for -$800. Does your target care how ugly your weapon is?

I was thinking the same thing... I've seen several R700's that shot .5 MOA out of the box within the last year...

I guess maybe it depends on your idea of what a "Turd" is....

Some people think any truck that isn't a turbo diesel 4x4 with tow package, custom exhaust, intake and computer chip optimizations is a turd... some people think that any steak that's not a perfectly medium rare filet might as well be a turd....

Meanwhile.... a guy who gets a Chevy Colorado 2x4 with 35k miles might think it's the nicest vehicle he's ever owned.... the same guy would probably enjoy a good burger after shooting his Remington 700 at the range...

I know guys like guy #1 with 7000$ worth of rifle that don't shoot any better groups than my buddy at work who doesn't even OWN a rifle right now.

True story, my "Non active duty" Marine buddy shot me a smiley face with a borrowed .22 rifle using a 100$ used scope while Mr fancy gun had a hard time hitting the X ring at 100 yards.

I've seen many old and new 700's shoot 2-3 MOA PATTERNS off a bench. Moderate headspace, barrel and the need to true the bolt makes it work in progress.
Would I prefer a 700 that shoots? ....yep
Will I buy one to throw money at?.....nope
To be fair long range is only one of a few aspects of shooting that I enjoy so I'm not obsessed with having "the shit" for a rifle.
The guy next to me shooting a TRG 22 with a Nightforce probably won't out shoot me at distance.
Is a Savage an ugly cheap gun? sure is and I'm glad they make them cuz I'm not into dumping large money($2k+) on a long gun.
If I wanted to waste $2,500 on a weapon it would be a SCAR, which btw shoots tighter than a remy bolt gun

Exactly, the nut behind the trigger is the key to good shooting. I believe if a shooter can hold MOA than it warrants him shooting whatever he pleases.....On the other side there is nothing more pathetic than a rich guy with expensive guns who cant shoot.

I totally understand why people want "the best" rifle if that's there niche and they are a proficient shooter.

Re: Best 308 MOA out of the box for your $$$$$

I have personally purchased about 11 700s, and between my friends, probably another 50 rifles, I've yet to see a 2-3 MOA rifle. I think you're exaggerating, bud. Most all the 700s I've dealt with shot MOA or under. So have most of the Savages, besides one particular 270 that shot about 4 MOA with every ammunition we tried.

Last week a buddy and I took his SPS tactical to the range and shot some 168 GMM through it for the first time. The only modification to the rifle is we stuck the H-S take-off from my rifle on it (which had been skim-bedded to MY action). It shot right at .5 MOA. His Savage he used to have shot .75 MOA. Does that make the Savage a turd?

Either way, anecdotal evidence isn't enough to make such a suggestion. There are good and bad from both makers. Overall, you can't suggest a trend.

Buying a stock rifle of any make could be something to throw money at, but Remington is no more than Savage. Most rifles come with shitty triggers, shitty stocks, and so on with some higher-end offerings being the exception.

I'd vote for the T3 CTR Scout over the Tactical.

Same stock minus the adjustable cheek rest, same smooth action, same trigger, and about $500 less for the T3 CTR Scout vs. the Tactical. Only difference between the two is the adjustable cheek rest and the european threaded barrel on the Tactical. So basically, the only thing you are getting for that extra $500 in the Tactical, is an adjustable cheek rest.
