A friend asked me when mounting his scope to a picatinny rail once eye relief is selected and the slots chosen should he fasten/tighten the scope ring mounts as far forward or rearward as they will go against the rail slots?
I told him iduno but Ill ask around to see if it matters?

Re: Best choice for ring mount placement?

woodspider,

You didn't state the manufacturer of the rail/rings. Check the ring manufacurer website for info. For example, the Badger site has a good generic description for mounting bases and rings. It describes where/where not to use Locktite, torque (for their rings and base), and (as stated above) sliding the ring forward against the slot and tighten.

Consesus also dictates having the rings as far apart as practical to provide the best mechanical support for the scope objective and ocular.

I place my front ring all the way forward and the rear ring all the way back against the rail slots so that the rings are locked in on the rail in both directions. Never have had any issues through all the years mounting them this way.
