Decided to Rattlecan my Rifle

Decided that due to rain we would have a bit of an arts-n-crafts day. Ended up better than I had expected, might add some green to it. I'm learning that one needs to just stop trying to make it better when it's looking good. LOL I got more mags so maybe the next one I'll add in some green to it.

Sprayed the base color in a textured sand. Let it stand a bit. Then I just tore/sliced off chunks of sponge using some Adobe and Expresso colors. Sprayed the sponges....dab here....dab there....change colors.....boom done. I'll have to figure out a way to tamp down the sheen since it was a Satin paint.

3rd try is the charm. I didn’t like my store bought stencils so I did the sponge camo. It looked too busy to me. I wanted a large contrasting pattern and I didn’t want the same old thing. I looked at a bunch of different camo jobs online and borrowed a few ideas then made my own stencils with Frog Tape. It still has an Aervoe base coat with Krylon Fusion (flat black and arctic grey) on top. When it fully cures I’ll take some 0000 steel wool to it and get rid of some overspray spots and smooth the ridges between colors. Then I’ll clear coat it with something and be done.

I dig this, any pics of it complete?

When y’all rattle-can an AR, do you pull the BCG/trigger/etc or just let it rip? Any particular spots to avoid paint getting into?

Ive got one AR I want to give it a go with, as well as an all black MPA chassis that could use some personalization while it waits for the barreled action.

I would pull the BCG and tape off the trigger. Everything else should be fine if you put on light coats.

Rattlecan job on a couple ARs over Christmas/New-Years break. Just tape and Krylon. Not perfect paint jobs, but looks pretty sweet. Learned a lot the hard way, painting in 30 degree weather outside was not the best idea

Haven’t worked up the nerve to paint something nice yet. I do use the spray and pray method lol. Some of the stuff here looks professional

I can literally do most anything that the mind can come up with. I just don't know what route I'm going with it.

A few examples of paint jobs I've done previously.

I saw one with straw/pine needles overlay for second coat, looked really good.
I really like the snakeskin shape patterns, but not sure how that's done. Almost like cloaking technology.
