Hi
I have never had any experiance with a 700 p however tomarrow i am getting a 24 inch rem varmite barrel put on my m24 clone.
I am wandering what to expect as far as muzzle flip. I have a sps tactical that i had in a 700p stock that was horible when it came to shooting from a bipod.

Will the 24 in barrel have similar flip. I am considering using a sps tac barrel that i have taken off my other rifle and a roedale precision brake, but if the flip will not be anyware near the sps t with out the brake i will follow through with the longer barrel.

I have googled this and come up with very little.
thanks

Re: Dose a 700 pss .308 have muzzle flip

thats cool, i get it. i will keep this in mind. My issue is that when at the range i frequently go to, the tables are are basicly cinder block construction with plastic tops and you sit on a bench seat. So you cannot get behind the rifle. If you place the rifle in front of you there is not enough table under it for the bipod to rest on. So i sit side ways and use a sling. The issue i am refering to is the rifle slides on the smooth table top. And if there is flip you cant keep your scope on the target.

I was hoping that by placing a 24 inch barrel on this it would help prevent the sideways motion the shorter barrel traveled in upon recoil.

that is video is great info and just goes to show the accuracy levels that can be achieved by having the rite body mechanics

thanks for the info and video

Re: Dose a 700 pss .308 have muzzle flip

know they dont allow prown shooting, that would be nice, but they only allow it when they have 4h matches with m1 garands.
I guess mabey it is a safty thing, they wouldnt be able to see you on the camaras, If you were between the benches. And ive seen some people do some pretty questionable things. So its probly a safty and law suit prevention thing. But i dont know.
Ill see if i can find a matt that will grip on both sides. So that it will grip the table and bi pod.
thanks for the advice.

also i just got an accushot bto4 mono pod for the rear. mabey holding on to that with my free hand will help. As far as i know in CA there is no chance of getting a can.

Cameras at the range? Wow. I think you will benefit with a small roll of carpet to lay down on the bench to allow your bipod to grip. And get rid of the cameras.

Re: Dose a 700 pss .308 have muzzle flip

I really don't think that the heavier barrel is going to cure problems associated with bad shooting posture, whether it's your fault or a constraint put upon you by your environment.

I also shot an SPS Tactical for a while. I then went to a 22" Krieger barrel that has a 1.25" diameter at the breech for three inches then tapers down to 1" at the muzzle. It isn't ultra heavy, but pretty heavy none the less. I still get muzzle flip if I'm not or can't drive the rifle right by getting behind it.

These days, I only shoot off of the bipod when I can either go prone or are assigned a spot that allows me to get behind the rifle. If I can't get behind the rifle, I just don't use a bipod. I use a bag and make do with what I have.

Re: Dose a 700 pss .308 have muzzle flip

thanks for the info every body, that has to be the most amazing rifle build i have everseen. Cool stuff. I have decided to go with a badger fte brake and cut the barrel to 22". I will try to find a rubber mat and see if it will work but in the end i will more than likely just stick with using my sand bags.
thanks again

Re: Dose a 700 pss .308 have muzzle flip

Shooting heavy fast .308 loads will give a bit of muzzle flip, this is especially true if your technique is not perfect. IMHO it can be difficult to watch a bullet going in through the scope without a can or a brake.
