F T/R Competition F-Class Nationals Results

It is Nationals time again, the first day in Lodi was the 600 yard stage. The winds were relatively light, no more than 2 minutes, but they had some tricky pick ups and let offs, and some vertical thrown into the mix. The weather was excellent, temps in the mid 60's, with rain threatening most of the day, but only producing a few sprinkles for the last two relays (out of 6).

What is the "S" "O" and "HM" mean... I'm guessing HM is High Marksman?.. I've no clue...

Nationals consists of 3 strings of 15 record rounds (in 17 minutes) at 600 yards on the 600 yard F-Class target (3" "x" ring), and 6 strings of 15 record rounds at 1000 yards on the F-Class long-range target (5" "x" ring) in 22 minutes. The matches are shot over 4 days (with a Team match day in the middle). Each of the individual days has a possible point total of 450 points.

6.5mm, 7mm, and 30 cal are typical for F-open.

6.5-284, 284, 7SAUM, 7WSM, 300 WSM in F-open are the more "common" calibers. You'll see smattering of other cartridges also; I've seen 6-284, 243, 243 AI, 260, 7-08, 7-08 AI, 300 WM, and wildcat cartridges.

F T/R you are limited to 223 or 308.

600 yards the target has 0.5 MOA "X" ring, 1 MOA "10" ring, 2 MOA "9" ring.

1000 yards the target has 0.5 MOA "X" ring (5" diameter), 1 MOA "10" ring (10" diameter), 2 MOA "9" ring (20" diameter), 3 MOA "8" ring (30" diameter), etc until you get to "5" ring.

No Results for the Nationals Teams matches, as they were called due to rain halfway through the 1000 yard stage. There will be a ruling by the referee tomorrow morning to see exactly what scores will be included in the "Team Agg"... Stay tuned.

My sentiments exactly. Some of us sat around for nearly a 2 hour delay and still shot the 600 yard match in the rain. Then later in the day the same MD cancells the 1000 yard match (smack dab in the middle of the relay) within 60 seconds of the 1st drop of rain. Just rain, not any thunder & lighting. Go figure???

... long sigh... There were a large number of competitors wondering the same thing, especially those from the Pacific Northwest. The conditions were wild, fishtailing 20+ MPH headwinds at 1000 yards, moving from 10 - 2:00 in seconds; the wind coaches really earned their keep!

Just my opinion, the rain wasn't the issue. Johny was more than a little concerned for the target pullers. The way the target carriers were shaking in the wind they were affraid a target would go flying out of a frame and hurt someone.

Can you post the 600 yard team scores (both individual and team total)?

Even though the 1000 yard match was not finished and therefore no scores the 600 yard match was completed. After three hours of waiting in the cold and rain the weather gave us a chance to shoot with forever changing wind conditions.

It was terrific visiting with old friends and making new ones. As someone who has only shot regional ranges it was a real experience to shoot at a new venue amongst the most talented shooters in the USA. For those shooters interested in F Class; the Nationals is a must do on your list.

Can you send me a copy of the pic you took of all the Savage actioned rifles?

Lastly, if anyone has pics of the match and in particular pics of the BNX Rifle Team during the awards ceremony, please send a copy to

Just enter early. And show up and shoot. No qualifications required. It would help if you had shot a few other matches first so you know about working the pits and so forth.
Next year, the nationals will be in Raton back to back with the SOA match. Not sure of the dates.

I was shooting a Leatherbuilt (Jack Leather, my gunsmith) .284 with Lapua brass, BR2 primers, H4350 powder. Bullets were Berger 175 gr. XLD, pointed. SEB rest.

I see a lot of guys running the 7RSAUM in open here, if Danny Biggs was using the same gun he was shooting he's using the RSAUM. It all about driving those long heavies with ridiculous BCs.

Talking to some of the guys shooting them and running the numbers they say they get for velocity with bullets like the 180s they are getting less than 5" of windage per full value MPH of wind. That's pretty darned sweet.

I wondered about that on day 2 when I seen Bob in expert class, I was shooting as an expert on my home range and he smoked me! They did rotate the relays around during the individual days and with conditions as they were I think it worked out pretty even. The last day shooters were squadded based on score.

I talked to Bob today and he told me about the shoot. He really wasn't too upset, just flustered I think. He said he wasn't going to shoot the Nationals again because this wasn't the first time that this has happened.

I see his point when you factor in all that is involved with money, time and etc, etc.

Bob is an extremely good guy that would do anything to help anybody out. When I was learning how to chamber barrels, I was exploring all the different methods that guys use. Bob invited me to his house for weekend to stay, as he showed me his way of chambering. I learned some new things that I still utilize when chambering and most of all made a new friend that I will have forever.

Bob didn't know me for boo when he invited me to stay at his house, where his lovely wife also fed me. That is the kind of gentleman he is.

Next year's Nationals will be in Raton, New Mexico, coupled with the SOA Matches. This will be an excellent opportunity to get accustomed to the range that the World Championships will be held on the following year (2013).

Not too far from your neck of the woods are the Berger Nationals, held in Phoenix, AZ in early February. These matches are very popular with the top shooters in both F-T/R and F-Open, and are a great opportunity to get good information.

I really appreciate your response, that info is very useful. It's not always easy to find the info online if you don't know exactly what you should be searching for. Phoenix is only about 5 hours drive from SD and even Raton is only a day and a half. I have found some regional competitions listed at ranges up near LA, but frankly, I'd rather drive to Maine than deal with LA traffic (LOL). Anyhow, thanks again, I'll look into these matches.

Really turns it into nearly 2 weeks vacation to pull it off, that or a lot of really long un-fun driving days. Nah, if you have someone to share driving, it is shorter than that (although not necessarily pleasant). For me, it was ~26 hours from Oregon to Wisconsin... straight. Your trip would be ~400 miles shorter. Long, tedious, but probably under 24 hours.

FYI

The 2012 Fullbore Nationals/SoA are 8-15 September 2012, with practice on the 8th.
The 2012 FCN are 17-21 September 2012, with practice on the 17th.

The 2013 FCN will be 18-22 August 2013.
The 2013 FCWC (F-Class World Championships) will be 23-27 August 2013.
