Finders Keepers?

sadly true
"Yeah, uh, officer someone stole my fuking KTM out of the back of my trailer while I was buying summers eve douche at the grocery store. So I need to report this to someone because my insurance company won't give me dick unless there is a police report."

"Sir are you ok? an ambulance is on the way. Here let me perform CPR on your passenger while we wait. Boy, that illegal alien was really hauling ass when he ran that red light."

Blah blah fuck the Po Po blah Po Po are fuckers. Blah blah blah.

Won't talk to the police unless you need them.

don't be offended but for someone like me there is very little upside to interacting with the police, if I lose my ktm its gone there is no insurance, if I get run down a cop will do nothing to prevent that. There is no upside to voluntarily contacting the police for any thing at all, unless cop is on side of road and needs help I don't plan to interact with the police in any official capacity for the rest of my life. Its just that simple. Not hating just not wanting to interact.

you over estimate the importance of police, they are mostly ticket writers and repot filers, I can defend myself and don't want to live in a country where i think I needs cops to defend me or have cops thinking hey need to protect me.

Yea we all understand this is just “pretend”..... ?

So your premis is that if I lose a pistol. Report it lost. And 2 years later it turns up in my deceased buddy’s couch having been sold at an estates sale, this is tantamount to lost change? It would automatically transfer to the purchaser of the couch? I would have no claim to said pistol ,which is proven to be mine through a lost gun police report?

I don’t believe in most cases that is supported by case law but since I am not a lawyer, you could be right. Hopefully an actual lawyer will chime in.

I do believe that the fact that this is a gun that indeed is an aggravating factor here.

Well I myself wouldn't know for a fact either. Which is why I was questioning. But this is an interesting topic, and hopefully we do find out just to clear the air...

BTW, if you witness an accident or a crime that doesn't involve you or yours walk the fuck away fast before the cops get there.

If you're ever contacted by cops or lawyers, admit nothing and better yet say nothing.

Sorry for the ego blow

Someone get pulled over and told to slow down? Get a ticky ticky? MP's drag you out the bar when you got a little wild? I'm sure you and jerry never have called the police for anything.

I'm retired, I can't see out of my dominate eye to well, I have a fucked up knee and my dick quit working. I have no ego. If I need help that I can't deal with on my own, like a theft or the meth head across the street, I call the police. Most of them where I live are Veterans. All the deputy here are. They are good people with families. They write tickets, perform CPR on dying people on the highway, They protect peoples rights. They keep people who cannot take care of themselves safe. They protect and serve the community. Because of the lawyers they write reports. I don't know what shitholes you guys live in where you hate the police so much, but hell, where I live they are great people and some of them are called friends.

Like i said above, there is no cop hating here , just do not want to interact with them in an official manner, even when getting a ticker, I do not converse at all or minimally. Personally, yes my friends who are cops, yeah we talk and have a blast, good peeps. Never called them for police help at all, half my fellow riding buds are cops, but they are no in uniform when we ride together so stop with the woe is me, if you are a cop you know there are many shit fer brains on the force that aint being weeded out anymore, that causes a credibility gap between the police and the law abiding public I am a reflection of that gap.

Get some viagra, eat carrots, buy a shortys 12 gauge pump.

I have to agree with DuneBoer.

I retired in 2016... from LEO. Now a College Professor of Political Science. I also consult with my wife and our privately owned law firm. She is the full time lawyer of the family and apointed by the federal circuit.

Im surprised here...with a group of shooters...military...and generally constitution loving members that there seems to be soo much dislike for LEO.

I have worked with some great ones...fired some bad ones but have to admit i learned alot about people, situations and life from my years on the road, investigations, internal affairs and command staff positions.

I never ever thouht i was better than anyone else...and was humbeled to do the job amd meet the people that i did.

It must really suck in some of your areas where you all live. Im sorry if some of you have had bad run ins with police... i have been there myself even while a cop but they are not all bad and the majority just want to do a good job and go home safe at the end of the shift.

Let's pretend that someone bought a vintage leather sofa set at an estate sale of a stranger. Sofa set gets put in storage for another year, then taken out and set up. While cleaning said sofa, a S&W 649 hammerless .38 snubbie falls out of the depths, fully loaded and covered in dust. Lets pretend that the pistol is in great shape for having been stored in the bottom of the sofa for who knows how long. What does the new owner of said sofa set do with the surprise? Keep it, turn it in to LE, or any other options? Let's also pretend that the Finder has no intention of selling or trading it...

Got an ex-wife or a mother-in-law? They might like it. But I would make sure it's stolen first. And call the cops second.

I like LEO’s my brother was a cop, I’ve hunted with them.

I took criminal justice pre-law classes and one of my teachers was a current district attorney, even he said don’t talk to police officers in an official police capacity unless you absolutely have to.

Never offer up information unless they ask.

Not to be conspiratorial, But nothing good comes of talking to a cop when you don’t really need to. That said, that does not mean I do not like or respect them.

Property is property.
That isn't even close to true. Steal a firearm and in most states that is going to get you a much stiffer penalty than stealing a TV.

Aside from the fact that there is a legal question here, there is also a moral one. Gun owners are largely considered staunch supporters of private property rights. Quite frankly I am taken a bit by surprise at the whole "finders keepers" entitlement mentality here. From a Christian values perspective, I don't think it holds water either. This isn't a hubcap we are talking about here....

Yesterday, I posted an ad on FB to give something away. A single Mom came and took it. On her way to her car she dropped a dollar bill, that I later found. I sat at my desk and printed 47 cents worth of postage on a 10 cent envelope to mail it to her. Why? Because my core values compel me too. Certainly not because I am some great person. In my life I have found wallets, phones etc. and I have gone to extraordinary lengths to see them returned. I also have had a strict policy of NEVER accepting any sort of money (reward) for something I feel is a basic human thing to do. Something that I am compelled to do. Why? Because that's how I was raised......

I have a couple friends that are cops. One is my best friend, training and hunting partner. He lives in Colorado and we text daily. I have come to believe that you can have no better friend than a cop. It seems to me to be a cultural thing.

The person is always good. Personal friends are different than talking to a random cop. Obviously.

I have some advice. I've bought items of dubious pedigree, some military items, and what I did was run the SN through the mfg., MPI, MP, CID, NCIS, FBI, local police and sheriff. They were all glad to run the SN for me to check if it was stolen, missing or wanted. After it checked out, I'd go ahead with the purchase. Once I met a guy on post to make a purchase and a range worker called the MP's when he saw us with NODs and other gear. They ran the numbers on everything and said have a good day.

The only other concern I'd have, it being a firearm, is whether or not it was used in a crime. You have no idea of the circumstances in which that pistol was hidden. The only way to tell would be ballistics. What if you used it in a legitimate SD situation, but the ballistics came back consistent with use in some crime as well? How do you rule that out? To be tested it'd have to be sent to a lab. Or does this matter given the situation?

I'd check it out the best you can, maybe "register" or record a transfer to yourself with today's date provided it's not stolen. Keep records of how it was obtained, best you can. If you know of someone or a way to get the ballistics tested against known crime weapons, that'd be nice IMO. But this may be easier said than done.

Last but certainly not least, I also think a call to an NFA lawyer (one versed well in firearms laws) would be a good idea too, they may have better info none of us are even considering. Plus it's a good way to CYA. Just be safe with your new find.

Contact your local Sheriffs office. Aprise them of the find, and find out what steps need to be taken to get it returned to the owner. Or better yet, have your attorney do it.

If I bought a Pelican case from you and realized it had an AI in it I would return it to you, because that was not part of our agreement. How would you feel? The Golden Rule covers this pretty clearly. Who knows this might be a missing link in a murder investigation.

I love and respect police officers as much as anyone else. But, I love my constitutional rights more. If you want a good example of why people don't "like" cops watch an episode or two of Live PD. Policemen can and do LIE to further their investigations. As such, many people do not trust policemen. In our community we frequently have police officers and firefighters working together. They offer to change your smoke detector batteries for FREE. What they don't tell you, is that once invited inside anything they see can be used further investigations. Do not talk to the police without an attorney, period.
