it's a Marlin x7vh in .308. The scope is just a temporary, its a tasco that i had laying around from my .22; i plan to purchase a SWFA SS10x42 as soon as funds allow. Also planned in a walnut stock that i intend to do the bedding job myself.
Taking it out Friday weather permitting to see how she shoots.

Re: first bolt rifle

I've noticed a few things that i am currently researching and checking out relating to the receiver on these guns. They appear to be very similar to the rem700's..in fact they use the same 2 piece bases as the remmy's so i'm curious if the holes match up to use the 1pc bases for the rem., as well as possibly stock options and other rem700 components such as DBM's. It may be a stab in the dark but you never know until you look into it.

Re: first bolt rifle

good luck with your marlin, not sure if your going to get in to high end stocks with out modification, but as a gun marlins are very nice well made and a grate "American Made" history do go with it. very very good customer service. i have a marlin 6079 limited my uncle bought me a long time ago my son still shooting it. i talked to them about 2 months ago the gun years old and they where more tan helpful and still had the replacement stocks with the coins in the butt-stock. wonderful company as you would expect.

keep us posted if you go balls out with it. good shooting

Re: first bolt rifle

i paid 340 out the door. so 375 with the temporary glass which my little brother is buying off me for his .30-06 for $25, at which i plan on putting either a SS10x42 or a SS16x42. If i can find a good aftermarket stock that i like, seeing as i have access to a full machine shop i may or may not machine out a full aluminum bedding block and build a full custom wood stock. Whats your guy's opinion?

Re: first bolt rifle

well..not the greatest group but its the only 5 shot group i printed. The barrel was pretty dirty discovered after we got the range that my bore cleaner wasn't in my cleaning kit so this was after zeroing the rifle. Plus i was having problems staying steady.

168gr Hornady Match
42gr IMR4895
The load was one my friend worked up for his vtr

I don't have pictures of the 3 shot groups from zeroing but the first string of 3 was roughly 3/4 MOA and that was with cheap 150gr fmj ammo.

Re: first bolt rifle

you have a bipod on it....stick a bag (or anything similar) under the rear of the stock to support the rear too.

you should not have a problem not being steady then.

neat thing about the marlin - barrel nut and trigger like a savage, receiver like a remington, priced like a mossberg. sort of a hybrid worth every penny.

Re: first bolt rifle

yeah, normally i will put a rolled up hoodie or a jacket under the butt of the rifle but with our position my bipod put it too high to do this. Having a clean barrel and a little bit of load development will probably help too. i know the rifle has a lot more potential then what it shot today.

Re: first bolt rifle

Time for an update.
Took the rifle out shooting with some Hornady factory match loads after attempting to free float the barrel. With no rear bag i was holding right at an inch for 3 shots. My buddy managed to put 3 rounds through one very ragged hole.

I also discovered that the barrel is only free floating when its not resting on the bipod. The factory stock is flimsy enough that when the rifle is resting on the bipod the stock is tight up against the barrel. Hopefully will have the new stock and a SWFA ss10x42 by the end of the month.

Re: first bolt rifle

If you're going to switch the stock, I would not suggest wood. Wood will warp and expand/contract under various weather conditions.

Accuracy = consistency. A consistent stock stays true under all conditions.

Those cheapo plastic stocks aren't much better than wood.

I'm a fan of McMillan HTG stocks. However, I do not know if McMillan makes a stock for Marlin actions.

Also Bell and Carlson are good too.

Re: first bolt rifle

well got a chance to get out to the range for a bit (only shot one 5 shot group with the .308). I finally got a rear bag and as was mentioned it definitely helped, the 5th shot was without a doubt completely on me, rushed the shot. Not bad for a sub$400 rig with factory ammo.
